It Was Simple: The Betty Broderick Murders

These were murders that would turn any town on its head, but La Jolla, Calif? That rich jewel by the sea? Thirty years ago, a man and his new wife were murdered in their bed. That’s a long time for a double homicide to stay in the public eye and imagination, but these were no ordinary murders. The killer was the man’s first wife, Betty Broderick. Betty and Dan Broderick had looked like the perfect couple, right up until they weren’t. After four children and nearly 15 years of marriage, after the riches they both worked for were finally within reach, he walked out and began having an affair with his assistant. But divorce ended the Brodericks’ marriage only on paper. “Till death do you part” turned out to be the way it would ultimately end: bitter, savage and fatal. It took two criminal trials to send Betty Broderick to prison, and we’ll hear not only from her divorce attorney, but also from the criminal defense attorney who argued for her in two murder trials, plus the foreman of the jury that convicted her. So many things burned this case into memory: The principals were rich. The jealous killer was, for a change, the woman, not the man. It’s been the subject of TV movies and books. It’s resonated with two generations of Americans -- deserted wives, unhappy husbands. And it’s raised some questions about how divorce laws may contribute to what’s called the feminization of poverty. All of these issues remain critical and controversial in contemporary America today. Thirty years after five bullets, two coffins and one California prison inmate No. W42477, why can’t we look away from Betty Broderick?

We are a group of humans who serendipitously came together, made a wonderful connection sharing our stories, trial and tribualtions and how we handled them, or how we are still handling them. In our first conversations it felt something like "The View" We have all had some degree of relationship to any topic we shared. Trauma, divorce, parenting, self-care, travel , it didn't matter what the topic, we could relate in some way. That's when we realized that there must be so many more out there who may be starting a difficult journey, in the thick of it, or just emerging from it. What better way to embrace, inspire and empower one another. Through sharing our stories we discovered there are resources and support out there that some of never knew about but sure wished we did. Together we have formed an alliance with one goal to connect and support as many people as possible. Even through the toughest conversations, we find our way back to a smile because we know we have each others' backs, and we have yours too. Editing Credits @jJulie Vanderlip

Welcome to the How To Love Yourself No Matter What Podcast, hosted by Amanda Hess, a Certified Trauma Aware Life & Success Coach for Neurodivergent Women. This podcast is dedicated to helping neurodivergent women change what they think is "wrong with them" into their superpower. Amanda struggled with her neurodivergence for years without even knowing that it was neurodivergence. Maybe you can relate? Thanks to not understanding her unique brain and her unique needs, Amanda spent decades dealing with the emotional fallout of not knowing how to address her highly sensitive nervous system. This meant a long journey of mental health struggles, meds that didn't work and therapy that seemingly made her feel worse, not better. Until she found coaching, which changed everything. Now Amanda teaches neurodivergent women how to approach their unique brains in a way that creates trust, understanding, and real results. If you are craving a new experience with yourself and want to feel like you truly belong to yourself and to the world, this podcast is for you. Let's get started.
