"Soldier on" was Hope Edelman's coping method for the sudden death of her mother until seven years later, a broken engagement brought her mother's death roaring to the surface. Hope started writing her New York Times Bestseller Motherless Daughters as a way to comprehend her loss and connect with other motherless daughters. Today we're talking about how death makes us crave truth and clarity, why it's so important to "add the middle" to our stories, and what other cultures have to teach us about grief and loss. Also this week, I'm reminding you that permission to grieve is a practice and reading an excerpt from my new book Permission to Grieve.

Coming Back: Conversations on life after loss - E128: Grief in the Language of the Heart with Cristina Chipriano

Cristina Chipriano grew up knowing grief, losing her 5-year-old cousin, her aunt, and her godmother all before second grade. After becoming a social worker, she helped create grief support programs in Spanish at Bo’s Place in Houston, where much of the community is Latino. Today, Cristina and I are talking about how death can take families farther apart AND closer together, how the cultural value family pride prompts Latino grievers to get grief support, and why it’s so important for grievers to be able to express their grief in their first language, what Cristina calls the language of the heart.

Coming Back: Conversations on life after loss - E54: Comfortable in the Surreal with Diane Speer - Bereavement Cruise 2019
play

09/12/18 • 51 min

Diane Speer was nine when she was cornered at a memorial dinner by her uncle, who unloaded the traumatic grief of losing his son onto her. From that day on, she was terrified of wakes and funerals. Today, the death her grandmother, the death of her mom, and three near-death experiences (NDEs) have cracked her open to her calling: helping people "transition" from life to death through mindfulness. We're talking about how grief makes us comfortable with death and loss, the role of intuition in grief, and how we can incorporate more self-care into our grief journey. Also this week, I'm watching, following, and reviewing the new Facebook Watch series about a young widow Sorry for Your Loss.

Modern Loss founders Rebecca Soffer and Gabrielle Birkner are members of the "Women With Dead Parents Club." Rebecca's mom died after a car accident and her dad had a heart attack while traveling abroad. Gabi's father and stepmother were murdered in a robbery when a recently released methamphetamine addict was sent to their home to make what should've been a run-of-the-mill home repair. Rebecca and Gabi met and created Modern Loss, a multimedia platform for sharing candid stories about life after loss. Through their book, website, and live events, they're sparking powerful and unconventional conversations on grief... and beginners are most definitely welcome. This week, we're talking about how ANY moment can be a trigger for grief, the surreal feeling of being an adult orphan, and why the time for pretending to be perfect is over. Also, I'm answering a listener question about living in despair.

Susan Angel Miller's daughter died suddenly after being diagnosed with a rare form of childhood brain cancer. Not four years later, Susan was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent surgery—and the parallels to her daughter's experience are incredible. Susan's book Permission to Thrive recounts the experience of her oldest daughter's death, Susan's experience of having a brain tumor, and the concept of post-traumatic growth, which she is actively harnessing in her process of "coming back." Today, we're talking about how grief is AWKWARD, why Susan never stopped speaking her daughter's name, and how the miracle of organ donation introduced them to a woman named Trish. Also this week, the weird phenomenon of "temporarily unable to see rainbows" that grievers often face.

Coming Back: Conversations on life after loss - E55: The Energy of Grief with Sharon Ehlers - Bereavement Cruise 2019

Sharon Ehlers has a logical mind, one that made her skeptical of energy work and healing when it crossed her path in the aftermath of two devastating losses by suicide. Now, eight years later, she owns and operates Grief Reiki, a business that helps people cope with the energy of grief—an energy that affects the body, mind, and spirit. Today we're talking about what Reiki is and how it can help a grieving heart, how Sharon is bringing Reiki on the 2019 Bereavement Cruise, and what skeptics can do to open themselves up to alternative practices like Reiki. Also this week, I'm sharing a gift: my private Spotify playlist for writing, meditation, and grief.

Writer and kindergarten teacher Rachel Whalen is a mother to many, but has just one living child. After two miscarriages and the unexpected stillbirth of her daughter, Dorothy, Rachel conceived and delivered her daughter Frances. Today, we're talking about the differences between parenting a dead child vs. a living one, what makes grieving parents want to try to conceive again after miscarriage and stillbirth, and the powerful message Rachel has for grieving parents who are pregnant. Also this week, I'm talking about the concept of life-rejection and sharing a passage from my new book Permission to Grieve.

On July 13, 2011 Kelley Lynn woke up to an entirely new life. Her husband, Don, collapsed from a massive heart attack at work just four years and nine months into their happy marriage. Kelley suddenly became a widow. This week we’re talking about how loss forces us to reinvent ourselves, why we need to grieve both personal and joint dreams, and how one laughable grief cliche turned into a global rainbow-spotting movement honoring Don’s life.
