E93: Motherless Daughters with Hope Edelman
Coming Back: Conversations on life after loss
10/02/19 • 67 min
"Soldier on" was Hope Edelman's coping method for the sudden death of her mother until seven years later, a broken engagement brought her mother's death roaring to the surface. Hope started writing her New York Times Bestseller Motherless Daughters as a way to comprehend her loss and connect with other motherless daughters. Today we're talking about how death makes us crave truth and clarity, why it's so important to "add the middle" to our stories, and what other cultures have to teach us about grief and loss. Also this week, I'm reminding you that permission to grieve is a practice and reading an excerpt from my new book Permission to Grieve.

E90: Parenting a Dead Child with Rachel Whalen
Coming Back: Conversations on life after loss
09/11/19 • 54 min
Writer and kindergarten teacher Rachel Whalen is a mother to many, but has just one living child. After two miscarriages and the unexpected stillbirth of her daughter, Dorothy, Rachel conceived and delivered her daughter Frances. Today, we're talking about the differences between parenting a dead child vs. a living one, what makes grieving parents want to try to conceive again after miscarriage and stillbirth, and the powerful message Rachel has for grieving parents who are pregnant. Also this week, I'm talking about the concept of life-rejection and sharing a passage from my new book Permission to Grieve.

E113: Grief Day by Day with Jan Warner
Coming Back: Conversations on life after loss
05/06/20 • 45 min
Ten years ago, Jan Warner lost the “person who held her kite string”—her husband Artie. In the years after his death, Jan wrestled with suicidal thoughts and the urge to wallow. She began writing in an attempt to wear different “perspecticles” about her loss, and in 2018, she published a book called Grief Day by Day that speaks to grievers through a year’s worth of quotes and exercises. Today, we’re talking about the very real feeling of wanting to die after a loved one dies, changing how we measure effort and productivity after loss, and how to reframe “Is this normal?” into another, more important question.

E17: 30 Days of Epic Wallowing with Tracey Lewis Stoeckel
Coming Back: Conversations on life after loss
09/06/17 • 54 min
Tracey Lewis-Stoeckel's life was upended when her husband surprised her with divorce. She and her kids were forced out of their home one week before Christmas and Tracey was shortly faced with leaving a job that she loved to take care of them. We're talking about the habits, mantras, and music that helps us rebuild. Also on the show, I answer a listener question about the illusion of closure. And I call out friends and family who are intellectualizing your grief.

"The Hotel Artist" Catherine Rains faced a triple-whammy of devastation—breast cancer, a divorce, and being pulled away from her beloved art. We're talking about the mindsets she used to come back from her losses and the inspiration she draws from life's happenings to create beautiful Instagram-famous collage art! E80: Living WITH Fear Not IN Fear with Susan Angel Miller
Coming Back: Conversations on life after loss
05/22/19 • 71 min
Susan Angel Miller's daughter died suddenly after being diagnosed with a rare form of childhood brain cancer. Not four years later, Susan was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent surgery—and the parallels to her daughter's experience are incredible. Susan's book Permission to Thrive recounts the experience of her oldest daughter's death, Susan's experience of having a brain tumor, and the concept of post-traumatic growth, which she is actively harnessing in her process of "coming back." Today, we're talking about how grief is AWKWARD, why Susan never stopped speaking her daughter's name, and how the miracle of organ donation introduced them to a woman named Trish. Also this week, the weird phenomenon of "temporarily unable to see rainbows" that grievers often face.

E111: My Hope Is Still Healing with Frankie Orella
Coming Back: Conversations on life after loss
03/11/20 • 43 min
When she was just 17 years old, Frankie Orella lost her mom to breast cancer. Her religious community was less than helpful and while she remained a part of the church, Frankie also looked to music and songwriting to “speak” to the pain of her loss. Her latest endeavor is a series of songs based on Elisabeth Kubler-Ross’s Five Stages of Grief. Today, we’re talking about becoming comfortable with the mystery of grief, why being in a safe or stable place is often a trigger for grief, and how after loss, hope needs time and space to heal.

E128: Grief in the Language of the Heart with Cristina Chipriano
Coming Back: Conversations on life after loss
09/24/20 • 55 min
Cristina Chipriano grew up knowing grief, losing her 5-year-old cousin, her aunt, and her godmother all before second grade. After becoming a social worker, she helped create grief support programs in Spanish at Bo’s Place in Houston, where much of the community is Latino. Today, Cristina and I are talking about how death can take families farther apart AND closer together, how the cultural value family pride prompts Latino grievers to get grief support, and why it’s so important for grievers to be able to express their grief in their first language, what Cristina calls the language of the heart.
