Diet, Riot, Sweat, Repeat

Welcome to the podcast that explores and smashed the insane patriarchal body image messages that keep us on the diet, riot, sweat, repeat carnival ride. This podcast is an exploration of where these awful body image "should" messages originated and how we can finally smash the body image insanity together. What does diet, riot, sweat, repeat mean? We all know about dieting. It seems that every day there is a new diet to try that will melt away all those unwanted pounds. Low-fat, Keto, Intermittent Fasting, Whole 30, Weight Watchers, Paleo.... the list could go on & on. I know- I've tried them all! What happens when you restrict your diet? You RIOT! You binge and fall off the diet bandwagon. Then guilt sets in and you go sweat it out at the gym or on a long run. And the cycle repeats itself over and over and over again. It is an insane carnival ride that feels impossible to escape. What "shoulds" have you heard about your body? Have you been told that your skin should be lighter, darker, smoother, less wrinkly. have you been told you have too many curves or not enough curves? Are you too tall or too short? Too masculine or too feminine? No matter what your body looks like, you have probably been given messages throughout your life that your body does not look like what society and culture thinks it "Should" look like.Let's smash those "shoulds"! This is not a podcast where you will find a bunch of experts telling you how you should love your body. Instead, it is a podcast where you are going to hear the voices of very real women, just like you, who share their body image stories with us. It is through this common understanding and story telling that we can finally begin to unravel our beliefs and find the core of these harmful "shoulds".The host, Tiphany Kane is a 49 year old woman battling body image issues. She has a masters degree, is the CEO of a company she co-founded, she speaks on stages all over the country, is the Executive Director of Sonic Bloom awards, and is the mother of 2 boys...one heading off to college in a few months. And yet- even with all these life accomplishments- she still feels shame that her body does not look like it "should". Are you the same? Are you an accomplished woman (cis or trans), or non-binary person that feels disappointed when you see a picture of yourself? Do you focus on your belly, arms, butt or thighs and wish they looked different? Are you sick and tired of trying diet after diet? Have you ever made yourself go hungry just to lose weight? Are you sick and tired of denying yourself life's simple food pleasures? This podcast is for you!

Circling the Drain

71 Episodes

Avg Length 59m

|

Latest episode 10 months ago

A podcast about the period BEFORE you stop getting your period. The concept of a woman "circling the drain" conjures up negative imagery for some, but the origin of this as the name of the podcast has a story. A friend, in her 30's at the time, was listing her ailments to a male physician who clearly had a terrible bedside manner, because he responded to her complaints by shrugging his shoulders in a dismissive fashion and saying something like, "I don't know what to tell you. From now on, you're basically just circling the drain!" Co-hosts Ellie and Julia have been laughing at the audacity of this tone-deaf interaction ever since, and when they decided to start this podcast about the plight of the aging woman, they chose to reclaim and repurpose the phrase in the spirit of humor. Every human on the planet is circling the drain from the moment we are born. The question is, how slowly and gracefully can we spiral? And can we minimize the discomfort while we whirl? Perimenopausal co-hosts Ellie and Julia take a deep dive into the sometimes embarrassing, often hilarious, and always bewildering issues of the hormonal changes that take place in midlife. Through honest accounts, thoughtful interviews, and group panel discussions, their mission is to make you chuckle, make you nod your head in recognition, and hopefully make some scientific progress.
Wellness Connection MD

Welcome to the Wellness Connection MD podcast, where Dr. McMinn and Coach Lindsey become your partners on a quest for optimal wellness. Simply stated, our goal is to bring to you up-to-date, honest, vetted, unbiased, evidence-based information about health and wellness, along with practical solutions, in order to empower you to overcome your healthcare challenges, and to optimize your health in mind, body, and spirit. As our population ages, and we are faced with an alarming epidemic of chronic diseases. Clearly, the current drug-based sick-care model of healthcare is simply not working. The cost of healthcare is skyrocketing for patients, and for our society at large, and legions of patients with chronic diseases are falling through the cracks of modern medicine. These people are often desperate to be heard, to be taken seriously, and to have their concerns adequately addressed. On the Wellness Connection MD podcast we will focus more on a preventive, lifestyle-based, functional, and integrative approach to optimal wellness. We challenge the medical community to "think different," while remaining evidence-based, while opening our minds to other viable therapies beyond drugs and surgery. We also advocate that this shift in thinking be accompanied by a renaissance of "loving kindness" in healthcare. Providers and patients would all benefit. We are hopeful for the future of health care. Patients are demanding a new approach, and big medicine is beginning to listen. Fifteen years ago when we embarked on this journey integrative and functional medicine were hardly on the radar screen. However we now see that many of our most esteemed healthcare institutions have dedicated integrative or functional programs, such as Harvard, Duke, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Vanderbilt, UCSF and many others. Integrative and functional medicine are gaining credibility across the nation and around the world. We will all be better off for the change. We hope that you will join us on this journey to optimal wellness on Wellness Connection MD. Take care and be well.

Menopause Matters

Did perimenopause - or menopause - catch you off guard? - Weird symptoms appearing from nowhere? - Wondering who is this person who's inhabiting your body? - And most of all, having no one to talk to about it? It happened to me, too! Anger, depression, and a bottomed-out libido played havoc on my marriage, career, and my relationship with my son long before I felt my first hot flash. In the aftermath of that wreckage, without any clue as to the true nature of the problem, I vowed to get fit and healthy, hoping that would at least allow me to survive the chaos that was my life. It worked - I lost weight, got fit, met a great guy, and even became a personal trainer, helping other women to lose weight and get fit. Like I said - it worked. That is, until it didn't. The weight started creeping back, and the weird, unpredictable symptom parade started again. Everything I'd worked to achieve was in danger of collapsing. This time, though, I knew I had to figure it out and the signs all pointed to menopause. I dug in, reading often outdated books and searching obscure references on the internet. I learned how our shifting reproductive hormones mess with every cell in our bodies. And as I realized how complete this hormonal disruption was, I became determined to help other women understand and control their own Menopause Journey. Because Menopause Matters. This is Menopause Matters, where we talk about all things menopause, especially how you can ditch the symptoms and delight in your life again. I'm your host, Jeanne Andrus, and this is the Menopause Matters Podcast.
