Sex Outside - When Things Don't Go To Plan
play

03/25/21 • 41 min

Any of us who love going outdoors are comfortable with being prepared in the face of the unexpected. Alexandra Gabrielle, an entrepreneur and outdoorswoman, is certainly no exception. And when something unexpected happened this past winter-- an unplanned pregnancy-- Alex was put to the test in navigating unknowns to determine what was going to be best for her and her body. Not once-- but many times throughout the process.

Alex wanted to have this conversation because, frankly, we don’t talk about preparedness enough with it comes to sex. Not the way we do when it comes to safety outdoors. And the reality is that you can be completely prepared and still encounter times when things just don’t go to plan. But knowing the potential risks and options well in advance can always help you to make better, less-stressful, more informed decisions.

We know these lessons from being out in nature-- but we rarely apply this logic to our bodies.

Alex is sharing her story with the hope that we all begin to seek out more information from our bodies when possible, and ask our medical systems to do the same.. so that no matter where we are-- the backcountry, the couch, or somewhere in between-- that we show up feeling more ready for whatever comes our way.

A note that this episode covers discussion of unplanned pregnancy and abortion.

Being prepared is a very common concept for outdoor professionals and enthusiasts, but it’s not something that often gets applied to sexual violence and harassment intervention. And the skills we need to keep each other safer from sexual harassment and violence-- surprise!-- aren't ones we've been taught or encouraged to exercise.

When it comes to outdoor communities, studies show there are additional factors to consider that increase the risk of sexual assault and harassment taking place. So why aren’t we talking about it? And more importantly– what do we do about it? Join Morgan Flynn and Cora Phillips, two staff members from Seekhaven Family Crisis and Resource Center in Moab, Utah, to hear more about how we can make a tangible difference, even in one person’s life, by showing up prepared.

Sex Outside - Let's Talk About Sex (Yes, You Too)
play

11/12/20 • 3 min

We think your voice would sound *so good* on the premiere episode of Sex Outside.

For a lot of us, talking about sex isn’t easy. In fact, sometimes it’s just plain awkward. That’s why open dialogue about sex, gender, sensuality, relationships, and our bodies doesn’t happen often enough... and that’s also why we’re starting this series by breaking the ice, together as a community.

In short: we want to hear your voice.

Whether you’re nervous to talk about sex, or whether you feel completely comfortable-- we want to hear from you about what makes sex tough to talk about or has in the past, and how nature or the outdoors has opened up those conversations for you, or makes you feel more comfortable in the process.

Maybe it was a childhood full of watching Animal Channel. Maybe it was the first time you skinny dipped. Maybe it’s simply that you feel more like yourself in the outdoors, and this time outside is exactly what allows you to be more of yourself in the bedroom. Whatever your story might be, or whatever it is that makes sex tricky to talk about for you-- we are here to share these stories in community with one another, learn from each other, and begin normalizing conversations focused on sex.

Voice submission are now open, and we think you would sound *so good* on this premiere episode. To learn more, you can head to sexoutsidepodcast.com/voice.

Sex Outside - Nature Quickie: Pressure and "Performance"
play

03/04/21 • 8 min

Sex Outside Nature Quickies are short, 5-minute dives into a specific, practical topic about our bodies and the outdoors. This one features a conversation with sexual and reproductive health specialist Dr. Justin Houman about why so many of us are focused on sexual “performance” when it comes to erections, how we don’t talk about erectile dysfunction often enough, and some of the ways biological processes, mental health, and pressure from sexual partners can contribute to anxiety around getting hard.

Sex Outside - The Not-So-Dirty Talk About Hygiene
play

08/13/21 • 37 min

What’s the deal with our collective embarrassment around hygiene? How is sex and gender tied up into all of this? What happens when we don’t talk about hygiene openly? And-- just as importantly-- what happens when we do?

Anastasia Allison, founder of Kula Cloth, joins the show to dive into this, and we lean on our own personal outdoor hygiene stories and mishaps to illustrate that when it comes to hygiene, there’s nothing dirty about it-- and nothing to be ashamed about.

Condoms are single use, which might give some environmentally-minded folks reason to pause and wonder if they should use them or not. However, condoms are also incredibly accessible and effective when it comes to unplanned pregnancy and STI prevention. So today we’re taking a journey together following the general lifecycle of a condom to better understand the impact of single use products like condoms while also holding how essential they are to our sexual health.

Sex Outside - Uprooting Gender Binaries
play

05/20/21 • 59 min

When it comes to gender binaries, there’s a lot of digging to do to get to the root of our problems. And while there are a lot of ways to uproot a plant-- it really depends on how much it’s grown, how tightly its roots are wound, how far its system has spread and embedded its tendrils into the ground-- that determines how challenging it is to get it out.

Nick Albritton, a transgender man and outdoorsperson, spends a good deal of time unpacking specific ways he’s seen gender binaries show up all throughout his life, and the damage they can do-- especially to transgender folks and those who are gender nonbinary. He also shares about the way nature has quite literally saved his life and helped give him the space he needs to dig deeper into what it means to truly be himself.
