This episode focussed on debunking the narrative that claims menopause is a deficiency that requires fixing with oestrogen, instead of a normal, healthy life event that ushers us into a vibrant, engaged maturity. I feel that if menopause is asking us to love ourselves better, to deepen our relationship to ourselves, then HRT can really help with that, allowing us to put ourselves first. But though HRT can be a lifesaver, when it’s used for a long time to continue to push through when our resources are already depleted, without making any lifestyle changes, it is just saving up problems for later.
Rachel Lankester, midlife disruptor, author of Magnificent Midlife, founder of The Mutton Club and host of Magnificent Midlife podcast explores:

  • The faulty menopause research that’s endlessly repeated
  • What symptoms HRT is helpful for
  • The latest research into HRT and dementia
  • Menopause and mental health
  • Why language matters
  • Rachel’s new project MenoClarity that’s offers free-to-access clear information and evidence-based research

I first came across Rosie Barnes's photography through her exhibition ‘No you’re not’ a striking series of portraits and statements from autistic women who have been successful in academia and business. Two images from this series have been included in the prestigious Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize at the National Gallery in London. Rosie is a documentary and fine art photographer with a particular interest in our relationship with the natural world. She also makes work about disability, difference, community and family. She has exhibited internationally, most recently in Sweden and China and has been commissioned by the Guardian, the FT, and the Wellcome Collection, amongst others.

We talk about her work and the images of autistic women, the value of shyness, Rosie’s route into photography, her funny, haunting work around nature and our relationship to it, what it’s like to see her work exhibited on a huge scale, and Rosie’s fascinating project to create a truly integrated, community housing project.

In this very special episode, after a year or more of nudging I have persuaded my teachers Alexandra Pope and Sjanie Hugo Wurlitzer of Red School to come along and talk about their wonderful new book Wise Power: Discover the Liberating power of menopause to Awaken Authority, Purpose and Belonging. It’s published by Hay House and you can pre-order now and get your hands on an actual copy on the 22nd of September.

It’s a grand, trailblazing guide to menopause, filled with nourishing wisdom to help you thrive as your empowered, confident self through this transition and into Second Spring. I was lucky enough to read an early copy and it reframes menopause with great clarity and precision, giving you a clear and grounded psycho-spiritual path to plot your way through the storms.

I ditched all the boring questions authors get asked and dug into what I really wanted to know to give you the exclusive, inside story on Wise Power. You won't hear this anywhere else!
The free, Wise Power Retreat is to be found at www.wisepowerretreat.com
All of Red School’s courses and resources and their fabulous menstruality leadership program is available at https://www.redschool.net/

This is another exploration into the way ADHD affects us, my guest is Victoria Gazzard, who shares more deeply and widely about the challenges of parenting girls with ADHD, rites of passage and managing adult life. Together we ponder how female gender stereotypes can be particularly restrictive and damaging for girls and women with ADHD and how these restrictions play out over adult life.
Victoria specialises in fertility and provides emotional support and therapies as well as practical advice and coaching to help her clients through challenging times.

Out of all the guests I have had on Life An Inside job, Jess Glenny offers the most vibrant and intimate window into her inside life as an Autistic person. I gobbled up Ravelled Up in a day, Jess's book is a beautiful exploration of how it is to be a human in movement, in growth and in authentic presence.
Jess is a movement teacher, facilitator, therapist and writer about all things body. She teaches ashtanga vinyasa, still yoga and conscious dance, and mentors yoga and dance teachers. She has specialisms in hypermobility and complex trauma. Her books include The Yoga Teacher Mentor, Hypermobility on the Yoga Mat, and Ravelled Up: A Journey Into Embodiment. Jess is Autistic and welcomes neurodivergent people into her movement spaces.

What happens to Autistic women and non-binary people in menopause? At a time when more and more people are receiving a diagnosis of Autism in midlife, we are only just beginning to discover what's going on.
In this episode, we hear a range of Autistic people talking about their experiences of their perimenopause and postmenopause life, what helped them, and what made things worse. Dr Rachel Mosely, who is Autistic herself and the principal academic in the Department of Psychology at Bournemouth University, offers us an overview of the situation along with her excellent research papers on menopause and autism. I am hugely grateful to all those who gave their time to share their experiences with us.
You will hear from:

Margaret Pelling: 74, a retired civil servant, author, wife, mother and grandmother who has a PhD in astrophysics.

Dr Rachel Moseley
