Andrea Wool, the founder of Autoimmune Strong, is a mom, a personal trainer, a nutritional therapy practitioner, an entrepreneur, and an autoimmune warrior. When Andrea started Autoimmune Strong — the first and only exercise program designed specifically for people living with autoimmune disease — she never imagined she’d eventually hire staff and end up helping thousands of others. It started as an experiment, driven by a simple question: What can I do to feel better?

As a former distance runner living with fibromyalgia and Hashimoto’s, just getting a diagnosis was a challenge. Her next hurdle? Finding the energy to play with her kids at the park. When doctors couldn’t help, Andrea took matters into her own hands. She knew there had to be a better way. With lots of research, some continuing education, and lots of trial and error, she found it. Now she’s using what she’s learned to help as many people as possible—and she’s taken up powerlifting along the way.

Meghan is a doctor of physical therapy and works as a physiocoach at Recharge in Ellicott City, Maryland. Recharge is a group fitness environment run by physical therapists (think: rehab and fitness under one roof) where Meghan programs and teaches group classes and treats patients. She also does remote strength programming.

Nell Rojas is on fire right now. This month, she signed a shoe deal with Adidas and recently finished the Houston Half Marathon in 9th place (with a PR of 1:09:42).

She was born into a Boulder, Colorado running family—I think it’s fair to say her dad, Ric Rojas, is a living legend in the running world. He was one of the first athletes to run for Nike, he won the very first BolderBoulder, and held the world record for the 15K. Now, he’s Nell’s coach—and she is following in his footsteps.

Nell walked onto the running program at Northern Arizona University as a freshman, and by her senior year, she’d earned a running scholarship. After college, she became a pro triathlete and dabbled in obstacle course racing before jumping into her first marathon. She signed up to race the California International Marathon, thinking she ought to have a marathon under her belt if she was going to eventually do an Ironman triathlon, which was her plan. But after finishing 7th with a time of 2:31, she realized she had a ton of potential as a runner—and she still hasn’t gotten around to that Ironman.

Since then, Nell’s running highlights include winning the BolderBoulder Citizen’s Race (a lifelong dream of hers); winning Grandma's Marathon (in 2:28, a blistering 5:40 pace), and finishing 9th at the 2020 Olympic marathon trials on a hilly course in Atlanta.

After a bit of a break due to an injury and the pandemic, she was the first American to cross the line at the 2021 Boston Marathon this fall, where she finished in 6th place overall. And this was immediately after lying in bed for days with a fever, wondering if she’d even be well enough to get to the start line.

Like many endurance athletes, Stephanie Roth-Goldberg assumed her weight played a big role in her performance. As a marathoner and an Ironman triathlete, she didn’t think there was anything wrong with chronically missing her period. It took a cycle of multiple injuries for her to realize there was, in fact, something seriously wrong with the picture.

Today Stephanie is a psychotherapist, psychoanalyst, and specialist in eating disorders. She’s also the founder of Intuitive Psychotherapy NYC, a small group practice that specializes in working with folks with eating disorders from an anti-diet, Health At Every Size approach. Stephanie is passionate about working with athletes at all levels and people looking to heal their relationships with exercise.

Liz's Bio:
Liz McDonough embodies positive energy and the ability to get things done—especially hard things. Born and raised in upstate New York’s breathtaking Adirondack mountains, her surroundings cultivated her love for the outdoors from a young age.

After earning a bachelor’s in ceramic engineering and an MBA, she became certified in personal training, health coaching, TRX training, and Training for Warriors. She is the single mom of two amazing boys and loves anything the involves being outdoors; her favorite sports are biking (road and mountain), running, hiking, climbing, skiing, and snowshoeing. Liz’s passions are exercise, outdoors, adventure travel/sports with her boys, healthy cooking/baking, family, and reading. Among her many athletic achievements are six marathon finishes (including Boston), one Ironman (Lake Placid), placing third in the 2019 Sea to Summit race, and racing road bikes as a Cat 1 cyclist.

In this interview, we went deep and had a blast. I’ve known Liz since 2006; we met through triathlon and quickly became training buddies, logging tons of miles on the bike and many yards in the pool getting ready for Ironman Lake Placid. Even though we’ve been friends for years, I got to learn more about her during our chat, it was so much fun to go really deep with her. I felt really energized after our chat and I hope you feel the same way after you listen!

We also talk about how she got her through the early days when her kids were tiny, she was working full-time, and adjusting to her new life.
  • Spirituality
  • The power of exercise and nature
  • Swimming as therapy
  • Mom guilt
  • Liz’s advice to other women going through a divorce
