A husband, a dad, college professor, runner, a nobody. This audio blog is a deep dive into my life as a middle-to-back-of-the-pack runner who discovered a renewed sense of self. Through running, I found sobriety, purpose, and a sense of identity that I hadn’t known before.
This isn’t about medals or records—well, maybe a little—but I’m far from an elite athlete. Instead, it’s about the personal victories and the intense stories that unfold with each step on the trail to recovery and self-discovery.
All the stories are taken directly from, or adapted from my journals and are as true to my memory as possible. While I’ve done my best to present the content as authentically as I can, I may have made edits for clarity or grammar.
Friends since the U23s, we talk about our experiences in road and gravel cycling, trying to keep it fun but also going into technical details about training and racing.

Welcome to “Running at the Speed of Life” with Patrick Michel. We discuss everything from conquering mountains to questioning life choices at mile 40.
After nearly two decades of ultrarunning, I’ve learned success isn’t about shoes or energy gels. It’s about discovering your true capabilities, usually between “I’ve got this” and “Why did I sign up for this?”
This podcast isn’t generic “believe in yourself” mantras. Expect raw conversations about embracing challenges, building mental toughness, and developing resilience.
Running cultivates focus and discipline, making anyone who can push through a 50-mile race handle a Monday morning meeting like a champ.
This podcast offers honest insights from someone who’s logged enough miles to circle the globe (okay, maybe not quite, but it feels like it). Join me as we explore how endurance running can transform your life.
Let’s become stronger together – one questionable life decision at a time.

The Milestone Pursuit podcast started in the lockdown of spring 2020 as a way of supporting people with their running when we could only run alone. It began with Mindfulness in Running (featured in The Guardian) and now provides 3 things;
Workouts, where I (Steve) record a training session for you to download and run along with me as if I'm there with you
Recovery Rambles, where I run easy around the beautiful Epping Forest and talk about something on my mind
Conversations with the Elites as part of our scheme to invest in underfunded British Elite Marathon runners.
The podcast has spawned some off-shoots in the form of:
Marathon Milestones, a podcast coaching programme like couch-to-5k but for the marathon
Early Milestones, a podcast coaching programme to support people trying to get better at 5k and 10k
The Milestone Pursuit Running Club, where we provide a community of graduates of Early Milestones with ongoing sessions to help them maintain and further improve their running fitness.
Detail are on our website and at our Patreon page
The Milestone Pursuit is an action-oriented performance coaching business, operating in running and in business. It was founded in 2015 by Steve Hobbs, British Athletics Endurance Coach, 2h30 marathoner and AC Accredited Business Performance Coach.
