Circling the Drain

|

Avg Length 59m

|

Latest episode 10 months ago

A podcast about the period BEFORE you stop getting your period. The concept of a woman "circling the drain" conjures up negative imagery for some, but the origin of this as the name of the podcast has a story. A friend, in her 30's at the time, was listing her ailments to a male physician who clearly had a terrible bedside manner, because he responded to her complaints by shrugging his shoulders in a dismissive fashion and saying something like, "I don't know what to tell you. From now on, you're basically just circling the drain!" Co-hosts Ellie and Julia have been laughing at the audacity of this tone-deaf interaction ever since, and when they decided to start this podcast about the plight of the aging woman, they chose to reclaim and repurpose the phrase in the spirit of humor. Every human on the planet is circling the drain from the moment we are born. The question is, how slowly and gracefully can we spiral? And can we minimize the discomfort while we whirl? Perimenopausal co-hosts Ellie and Julia take a deep dive into the sometimes embarrassing, often hilarious, and always bewildering issues of the hormonal changes that take place in midlife. Through honest accounts, thoughtful interviews, and group panel discussions, their mission is to make you chuckle, make you nod your head in recognition, and hopefully make some scientific progress.
Zestful Aging

How can we age with zest, courage and vibrance? How can we tackle the challenges of aging--including ageism-- with awareness and skill? Nicole Christina, a psychotherapist of more than 30 years, interviews culture changers from all over the world and of every persuasion–including Python hunters in the Everglades and Hospice workers at San Quentin Penitentiary. Her topics have a humanitarian theme and are typically off of the mainstream. An expert interviewer and author of "Not Just Chatting: How to Become a Master Podcast Interviewer" Nicole’s conversations are deep and heartfelt. In these conversations, the challenges of aging are not sugar coated. Bodies age. We're not as fast or agile as we once were. 60, it turns out, is not the new 40. Acceptance is the key, although it's easier said than done. Our goal, then, is to navigate the losses of aging as well as to highlight the gifts. Many people report being happier when they reach 50 and are delighted by the freedoms they experience. They may have more time to themselves, and the new ability to discover what makes them truly happy. Many women are traveling solo and finding joy in their new friendships. It's a time to be curious and adventurous while our body still is in good working condition. It's not always easy, though. Trying new things can be scary. Nicole's guests are not super heroes. They are people who have found their own ways of meeting the challenges of aging yet still delighting in the life they have left. The Show brings optimism to the experience of aging in spite of the realities of expectable losses.
Menopause Matters

Did perimenopause - or menopause - catch you off guard? - Weird symptoms appearing from nowhere? - Wondering who is this person who's inhabiting your body? - And most of all, having no one to talk to about it? It happened to me, too! Anger, depression, and a bottomed-out libido played havoc on my marriage, career, and my relationship with my son long before I felt my first hot flash. In the aftermath of that wreckage, without any clue as to the true nature of the problem, I vowed to get fit and healthy, hoping that would at least allow me to survive the chaos that was my life. It worked - I lost weight, got fit, met a great guy, and even became a personal trainer, helping other women to lose weight and get fit. Like I said - it worked. That is, until it didn't. The weight started creeping back, and the weird, unpredictable symptom parade started again. Everything I'd worked to achieve was in danger of collapsing. This time, though, I knew I had to figure it out and the signs all pointed to menopause. I dug in, reading often outdated books and searching obscure references on the internet. I learned how our shifting reproductive hormones mess with every cell in our bodies. And as I realized how complete this hormonal disruption was, I became determined to help other women understand and control their own Menopause Journey. Because Menopause Matters. This is Menopause Matters, where we talk about all things menopause, especially how you can ditch the symptoms and delight in your life again. I'm your host, Jeanne Andrus, and this is the Menopause Matters Podcast.

Unfiltered. Unapologetic. Undeniably Needed. Let's face it — Aging is trending. And commercialism is cashing in. Brands are turning our reality into their next big revenue stream, pushing products, promises, and influencers disguised as saviours. They're selling "solutions" to "problems" they invented while we're out here juggling hot flashes, career pivots, and figuring out who the hell decided our laugh lines were something to fix. Sound familiar? Exhausting, right? Welcome to The FxCK YOU 50s, the podcast for women who are DONE tolerating the BS. Hosted by Andrea Claire, this is your fabulously filter-free dose of real talk, real stories, and a much-needed reality check. We're not a trend — And we're just getting started. Welcome to The FxCK YOU 50s! About your host Andrea Claire. Andrea is a woman who has finally said enough with this BS. At 53, Andrea has spent the last 30+ years in the fashion, beauty and entertainment world. She has seen and done it all (and hopes to continue unless the patriarchy ages her out). She was a familiar face on Canadian TV from 2002-2007, then she skedaddled to Singapore, returning home to Toronto permanently in 2022. Andrea shares her experience, stories and opinions as she encourages us all to put our foot down — but not in a Rosé way. 😉

Everyone has a story to tell, and in this podcast I sit down with a group of guests to learn about their childhoods, their marriages and children, the highs and low of their lives, and the stories that left them laughing or crying. And in so doing, show us a little bit of what it means to be human. Each season centers on a group of guests tied together with a common thread. Season 1 focuses on 5 Quakers or ex-Quakers from the Las Cruces Friends Meeting, and I also ask them why they became Quakers, and if they left Quakerism, why. In Season 2 I interview immigrants from around the world who all came to the New World to find a better life. I ask why they left, what immigration and integration was like for them, and what it means to be an immigrant.

Is the realization you are officially “middle aged” totally screwing with your head? Does the fact that all the favorite bands of your youth are now doing “reunion tours” give you a paradoxical feeling of joyful melancholy? Does realizing you can’t lecture your kid about their tattoos and/or piercings without them bringing up yours give you a headache? Wondering how in the hell you are still out marching about the same bullshit you were back in your Riot Grrrl days? Well you are not alone! Life is hard, yo! Just when you think you have it figured out fate throws a handful of nails under your worn tires and there you are, spinning out of control and desperately trying to gain traction. Big or small, it is easy to feel alone in your struggles and it doesn’t have to be that way. If you are anything like the rest of us tired assholes trying to accept that “middle age” is something actually happening to us, you thought you would have this shit figured out by now too. It is time to tighten up the laces on those old Docs and touch up our goddamned roots; because we are going to get through this crazy shit together.

Debbie, who is 72, explores that question in frank 30-minute conversations with best-selling authors, experts, and exceptional individuals. With her guests she delves into the unretired (non-retired) life, ageism, ambition, slowing down (or not), physical deterioration, grandparenting, intergenerational collaboration, grief and widowhood, and more. As well as other stuff that piques her interest such as the craft of writing. She invites her husband, Sam Harrington, on as a frequent guest. He’s a retired physician with a dry sense of humor and he makes her laugh. Debbie and Sam took a grownup gap year at age 61, leaving behind a professional life in Washington D.C. I have a passion for truth- beauty parlor- bathroom type truth. I think we are at our BEST inspiring and sharing with other women.I believe real beauty is being brave, bold & having the courage to follow your heart. I value honesty most of all & cherish the trust so many give to me. I see every detail on every face, the shadows & the light & this is my gift. I can operate, inject or laser to redirect shadows, remove extra skin, or smooth skin texture- but the real MAGIC is seeing the light of HAPPINESS shine from inside when someone looks like they did 5 or 10 years ago. This is the feeling I wake up FOR.
