These days, “transgender” has become a charged word, associated with arguments over identity, gender, pronouns, sports, puberty blockers and civil rights. But for many of the approximately 1.3 million transgender Americans today, the word isn’t a topic for debate; it’s who they are.

I couldn't be more inspired by our conversation with Maddie, a 22-year-old psychology student and childhood cancer survivor, who shares her incredible journey from being diagnosed with brain cancer at the tender age of three to overcoming adversity and pursuing her dreams in college. Her resilience and determination shine through as she recalls the challenges faced in school, including bullying from teachers who told her she wouldn't amount to anything - but college was a game-changer, where she met people who saw her potential and helped her on her path to success.

In the second part of this heartfelt episode, Maddie opens up about her passion for helping others, particularly military veterans struggling with PTSD. Her own mental health struggles and a chance encounter with a Marine who had experienced trauma of his own, have led her to a career in mental health.

Listen as Maddie shares her dreams of working at a VA facility and making a difference in the lives of those suffering from trauma - she's a true testament to the power of perseverance and compassion.

Chapter Summaries:

(0:00:00) - Impact of Bullying (13 Minutes)

We explore the devastating impact of bullying and cyberbullying on mental health, as well as the importance of providing support for teenagers and young adults dealing with these issues. Nhat Tran shares his personal experiences with bullying, depression, and anxiety, emphasizing that even though bullying may not be as visible as it once was, it is still a prevalent issue. Cyberbullying, in particular, has become increasingly common on social media platforms like YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok, and Facebook. The effects of bullying can include depression, anxiety, eating disorders, suicidal thoughts, and social isolation.

(0:12:44) - Friendship and Trauma (10 Minutes)

Throughout this chapter, we delve into the damaging effects of bullying on one's mental health, self-esteem, and overall well-being. By sharing a personal journey of being bullied, we learn how isolating and traumatic these experiences can be. The loss of identity, connection with friends, and passion for activities such as rugby are all consequences of the bullying endured. The importance of speaking up and seeking support is emphasized, as a single conversation with a friend significantly improved the speaker's mental health and outlook on life.

(0:22:22) - The Power of Speaking Out (8 Minutes)

We examine the power of speaking up and not allowing small problems to escalate into bigger ones. As we discuss personal experiences with bullying and toxic workplace environments, it becomes clear that staying silent only prolongs the suffering and allows the issues to continue. By sharing stories of overcoming these challenges and restoring mental well-being, we emphasize the importance of communication and standing up against negativity in our lives. Remember, "it's weak not to speak" and silence can indeed be deadly'

(0:30:46) - The Power of Speaking Up (12 Minutes)

In this chapter, we discuss the power of trust and the importance of having a support system when dealing with bullying and mental health issues. By sharing personal experiences and stories, we explore how speaking up and seeking help from trusted individuals can lead to healing and growth. Additionally, we discuss the significance of small moments and conversations in making a positive impact on someone's life. Finally, we touch on the importance of addressing bullying both in person...
