The Life Shift - Pivotal Life-Changing Moments - Charting a Career Path Against the Grain and Bringing Stories to Life | Wayne Partello
play

12/20/22 • 66 min

After being forced to abandon his dream of becoming a police officer, Wayne Partello, a young, ambitious entrepreneur, is confronted with a daunting challenge: to prove himself without a college degree in the cutthroat world of media and professional sports.

"You have control of your story. It's what you want to be known for, and you have control of that." - Wayne Partello.

Wayne Partello is the co-founder and CEO of CUENTO Marketing, a marketing and brand consultancy based in San Diego. He is passionate about helping brands determine their story and bring it to life.

Wayne Partello learned to make decisions with purpose and tailor his life to what he wanted to do. He wanted to be a police officer, but after the police academy, he moved to Boston to become a DJ. As a requirement, he returned to Florida to work as a police officer. But when the city was restructured, Wayne realized he needed to make a change and decided to go to a trade school. While his friends were graduating college, Wayne felt the pressure to have a career but eventually ended up with the real-world experience that guided the rest of his career.

In this episode, we discuss:

1. Exploring the power of real-world experience, as opposed to a degree, to achieve success.

2. Examining the importance of re-evaluating career paths to find true purpose and fulfillment.

After over a decade of media experience followed by over a decade of NFL and MLB front-office experience, Wayne Partello decided it was time for a change. He needed to scratch the entrepreneurial itch that had been following him since his teenage years, but this time he wanted to use all the experiences he had gained through his journey to help brands identify who they wanted to be and how to make that a reality.

In this episode, we flipped the script so I could tell my story. Throughout the first batch of episodes, the guests (and listeners) asked when I would tell my story. So, in this episode, my first guest, Christin Lindley, leads the conversation as I share the pivotal moments that shaped my life and eventually led to The Life Shift podcast.

As a child, Matt faced his mother's sudden and unexpected death. At just 8 years old, he had to grapple with the grief and sadness that comes with such a tragedy. He was also forced to adjust to a new life in Georgia, where he had to start school as "the new kid." Despite all this, he found comfort in his grandmother's love and support. Unfortunately, she eventually got a lung cancer diagnosis, and it became clear that her time was limited. On her 82nd birthday, they had a wonderful celebration surrounded by family. During this time, they were able to have an honest conversation about their relationship and express their gratitude for each other. After she passed away, he took time off from work to process his grief and come out on the other side with clarity. He realized that he had been living his life to other people's expectations, but now he could live authentically for himself. He learned that it's okay to be sad but also happy for the experiences you shared together. Grief is something you never get over, but it's important to process it to move forward in life.

Daniel Rinaldi shares his story of how losing his older brother to an inoperable brain tumor at the age of 10 changed his life forever.

“I think once my little brother came along; it was easier to let some of that go and really try and connect and cultivate that relationship and try and be as present and intentional with my younger brother that I could, as it could be because I just wanted to be this ideal older brother. The Life Shift - Pivotal Life-Changing Moments - BONUS: Celebrating the Women Who Shaped Me: A Special Mother's Day Episode
play

05/14/23 • 18 min

In this bonus Mother's Day episode of The Life Shift Podcast, I share a small portion of a letter that my dad wrote to me. The letter reflects on the life of my mother, Joan Gilhooly, who was a kind woman with a big heart. My mother tragically passed away at the young age of 32 while on a cross-country motorcycle trip with her boyfriend. This event turned my life upside down and forced me to experience grief and loss at a young age.

I reflect on how my mother's passing impacted my life and how it led me to seek out mother figures in my life. The most significant mother figure in my life was my grandmother, who I became very close to after my mother's passing. I share how my grandmother, born in 1933, had a difficult childhood where she lost her mother at the age of two. She understood what it was like for a child to grow up without a mother and wanted to make sure that I didn't have to go through the same thing. We spent a lot of time together, went on trips, and had a very special relationship.

I also talk about how I was able to say goodbye to my grandmother before she passed away. I share how I forced a conversation with her in which we said everything that we ever needed to say to each other. I left that conversation knowing that there was nothing left unsaid and that I was at peace with our relationship. When my grandmother passed away, I was by her side, and although it was devastating, I felt a calmness to it. I knew that she believed she was going to heaven and would be reunited with my mother, who was her best friend.

This episode serves as a tribute to the two women who inspired the creation of The Life Shift Podcast and, hopefully, reminds us of the importance of cherishing the relationships we have with our loved ones. My story is a reminder that even in the face of tragedy, we can find deep and meaningful connections with others that can help us through difficult times.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there!

The Life Shift - Pivotal Life-Changing Moments - The Importance of Courageous Leadership and Trust in Business | Ryan Berman
play

05/02/23 • 61 min

In this episode, Ryan Berman shares his inspirational journey of self-discovery through writing a book and pursuing courageous ideas in business.

“Like when you first tiptoe into that world, you have your own idea of what, like a powerful entrepreneur is gonna be like until you know, something about the word COURAGE resonates with them, and he comes up and has lunch with me. And so, like you, you realize that you're not that different. And I think that was big, you know, in my own mind, I was putting space between who I was and this pedestal of who other people are. And then when you actually peel back the onion, the only difference is that they've done at the level that you kind of want to do it at.”

As the founder and chief creative officer of Courageous, a creative consultancy, Berman has helped countless companies and leaders discover their true potential. But his journey to success wasn't always easy. As a creative in San Diego, he found himself struggling to balance his passion for creativity with the demands of leadership in management. Through his experiences, Berman emphasizes the importance of being courageous in the pursuit of your dreams and finding personal and professional alignment to achieve success.

During the episode, Berman also touches on the challenges of shedding old versions of oneself and embracing authenticity, even if it means going against popular opinion. He highlights the impact of being willing to outwork others for success and building a talented army through networking and finding the right people for the job. Overall, the episode serves as an inspiration for listeners who may be on the fence about pursuing their dreams or finding their true purpose, encouraging them to take action and embrace imperfection to achieve their goals.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

I started this show as a graduate school project, but the show's theme was inspired by my mother's sudden death when I was eight years old. At that moment, my life shifted and pushed me toward a new trajectory. Growing up, I always wondered if others had pivotal moments that changed things forever.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

I hope each episode finds the ears that need to hear the story. The goal is that at least one person feels less alone in their circumstances as a result of hearing one of my guests' stories.

Which episode should someone start with?

I would recommend scanning through some of the topics, but if you want to hear the true WHY for The Life Shift Podcast, I would recommend listening to my story: REPLAY: Honoring Memories, Overcoming Life's Challenges: A Story of Grief, Growth, And Empowerment | Matt Gilhooly.

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

I don't think I could pick a favorite episode. Each episode features a generous guest sharing their personal stories and journey through pivotal moments.

Which episode are you most proud of?

I'm really proud of the episodes where my guests came on the show and talked about events they've never shared publicly before: Reclaiming Trust and Finding Abundance After Heartbreak | Claudia Noriega-Bernstein A Haircut, Pronouns, and Complete Authenticity | Cristina Marcello Infertility Journeys Should Not Feel Isolating | Lauren Yard

What is your vision for your show?

My vision is that we share candid conversations that all humans should have. We should be comfortable sharing the messy moments in our lives. They make us interesting. As one guest, Morgan, said, "Our Mess is Our Message."

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

I quite enjoy true crime podcasts due to their puzzle-like stories. However, I highly recommend listening to A Fresh Story and Untether Your Life.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

The Life Shift came from the thought of my mother's death in an accident. At that moment, my life shifted off course and would never be the same.

A truly inspiring podcast from Matt and his guests. His knack for empathy, and knowing when to listen instead of talking, allows guests to share their story openly and without pause. A wonderful show, highly recommended.
