The JP Revolution

The JP Revolution

John Preston

Small Businesses are the foundation of our communities. Those foundations are being shaken to their core by unfair systems that give all the advantages to the big corporations. Large companies have the time, resources, and expertise to take full advantage of all the modern marketing tools. On the other hand, small business owners lack those key elements and are overwhelmed by all the options available. It’s time for a revolution. It’s time for small businesses to be back on top in our neighborhoods. That will only happen if they understand how to use their limited resources efficiently. John Preston has the unique ability to take complex marketing and business concepts and break them into easily digestible stories.

The JP Revolution - Politics and Religion can kill your business
play

09/09/20 • 6 min

One of the hardest things business owners have to do is keep their emotions out of their decision making process. Very seldom are emotional decisions in the best interest of your business. We all get worked up from time to time when something happens we don't like or when someone says something we don't agree with.... especially during the middle of a pandemic, race-related protests, and a nasty election. When that happens, the easiest thing to do is to pop on social media and tell the world how we feel. Unfortunately, social media has created an atmosphere where we can (and do) says things that we would never say to a potential customer. News flash!!! Not only do potential customers sometimes read those, they will often make emotional decisions of their own not to use your business as a result. In this edition of Small Business in Small Minds, we explore the simple logic behind the many of us were taught when we were kids: simply avoid talking about religion and politics whenever possible.

02/26/20 • 5 min

Running a small business is much harder than most people realize. When the decisions you make decide the success or failure of your business and affect the lives of your family and your employees in extreme ways, the pressure can be overwhelming. Those decisions are manageable when it involves your core business. In that particular field, you have enough expertise to feel reasonably confident in your ability to make the right choice. What about the parts of your business you don't understand. That's when it gets hard. Most business owners know very little about marketing. As a result, they have a hard time making decisions. They know they need to advertise, but there are so many choices. Fear of making the wrong choice often paralyzes them. They simply avoid making any decisions. When it comes to spreading the word about your business, no decision is a decision... one that can stymie the growth of your business or even its ability to survive.

The JP Revolution - Advertising vs Sponsorships
play

12/16/19 • 4 min

The terms "Advertising" and "Sponsorships" are often used interchangeably, but they means very different things and work in very different ways. They are both forms of marketing that involve putting your name in front of potential customers; that's where the similarities end. Advertising tends to be intrusive and take away from the life experiences of the consumer. Sponsorships, on the other hand, actually enrich the consumer in one way or another. This can significantly affect the impact your marketing campaign has on your brand.

Each of us is constantly at war in our own minds (good vs. bad, productive vs. lazy, confident vs. insecure, and brave vs. fearful). We cheer on the positive side of that battle, but all too often watch as the negative side wins out over and over again. Unfortunately, our ability to achieve the things we want out of life is entirely dependent on our "good side" being victorious. We want to reach out to potential customers but we end up surfing the web. We want to respond quickly to angry customers but we end up ghosting their calls. We want to practice our sales skills and get better at handling objections but we end up scrolling through our social media streams. Losing these battles blocks our efforts to grow. In this episode, we explore those internal wars and realize that winning is far easier than you think if you just start thinking about what you are thinking about.
