Every morning for the last ten years, whether it’s sunny outside, raining, snowing or a threat of severe thunderstorms, I’ve faithfully been on the dumb end of a dog leash following my longtime best friend Sparky. I used to believe it was me taking him for our daily walk until one day, probably several years into the routine, it dawned on me that it’s not me taking him for a walk as much as it’s him taking me for the walk. I’m guessing the real moment of awakening came when I realized that Sparky mostly decides on our specific route for each day while I obediently follow behind begrudgingly picking up after him. At least I’ve come to terms with knowing exactly what my role is when it comes to walking (or being walked) my dog; Sparky’s in charge, not me. But who’s walking whom in your real estate business? What’s the best use of your time if you want to maximize your earnings for each hour you invest? How long will it be until you’re able to reap the financial benefits of your tireless hard work? What I’m referring to of course is the 1099 Miscellaneous Income Statement that your Broker is obligated to send to you by the end of January. Reactions to this one single tax document range from disbelief (I can’t believe I actually made that much!!) to disappointment (I thought I made a whole lot more than that!!) and of course dreaded FEAR (Holy Shit!! Where did all that freaking money go??).
