Restoring Human Movement - What is Pilates? Instructor and Anatomist Tim Fleisher
play

10/25/17 • 62 min

SHOW NOTES

Tim was featured on Session 37 where he went into some really cool tips for engaging the deep core muscles using a balloon breathing technique. Back by popular demand, I interviewed Tim on the fly again about Pilates.

What is Pilates?

How is Pilates different than Yoga?

Does Pilates burn a ton of calories?

Differences of Pilates floor work vs machines?

Why you shouldn’t do selfies, and what is #grind.... enjoy.

This was a fun one... he really started to twist the knife on if I look like Paul Rudd or not. You can find out picture references here.

Reach Tim on his website timfleisher.com or email him at [email protected].

Restoring Human Movement - Lifting And Golfing Hip Rehab With Meghan Helwig
play

05/17/17 • 56 min

SHOW NOTES

Dr. Meghan Helwig is a Doctor of Physical Therapy I met at a seminar a few years ago while in Boston. At the time, I actually had a knee injury I was suffering from so between the sessions I asked her to take a look at it.

I was blown away by her troubleshooting ability and how she was about to look beyond the places I hurt.

This is what we are going to talk about in this session. Using your past history and past injuries to solve your current hip pain from lifting and/or golfing. Dr. Helwig specializes in both sports and personally takes part in both for her own leisure... all while having a hip labral tear. Awesome!

Here is a rough idea of what we covered in the hour:

  • Most common hip injury in lifting and golf
  • LIFE HACK: How to assess your own hip function
  • How treating scars of ligaments can improve your game
  • The process of doing corrective exercise just after treatment
  • Apologies from me... as I want to make sure no certifying bodies think we are bashing them :)

You can reach Dr. Helwig at http://www.primalstrengthpt.com/ . Reach out to her if you are in Northern San Diego CA. Her Instagram handle is @primalstrengthdoc.

Restoring Human Movement - Supplementation For Different Populations And Goals With Ben Brown
play

03/28/18 • 76 min

SHOW NOTES

Benjamin Brown was referred to be a speaker on the show and with most possible interviewees I do a phone call to chat first. Ben’s passion for helping people manage their lives through nutrition bled through the conversation so I had to have him on. He will be going over some cases we created to simulate the profiles and goals of some listeners. He also goes into other nutritional advice you may not have heard on the evening news.

Case 1:

Working Mom 40 YOA, who likes to do yoga and run weekly (distance under 10 miles at a time)

Goal: Stay healthy and flexible

Correlated testing?

Blood work? Etc

Case 2:

35 Year old male with weekly moderate lifting session. More anaerobic.

Goal is strength as they age. Not hypertrophy.

Case 3:

50 year Year old male looking to get the body of a 25 year old again. Experiences some lack of energy. Overall in good health but has lofty goals.

BLS Nutrition Website

Ben Brown’s Bio:

I’m a health specialist who helps busy women (and men) lose their stubborn body fat for good.

I have over 13 years experience in working with clients just like you to help them put in place realistic and easy to implement nutrition, fitness and lifestyle changes so that they can finally feel at home in their body again and get their energy and vitality back.

How Do I Know How to Create Lasting Change?

If you want to hear about my credentials, here they are: I have 2 masters degrees, one in Clinical Nutrition and the other one in Exercise physiology....but that’s not what makes me so successful at getting the results I do for my clients. Don’t get me wrong...those two degrees really help me to understand the science behind the results my clients get...but as you know, it’s a lot more than that. Losing weight and keeping it off involves a lot more than science.

If you have been at this awhile you know it’s not all that easy, especially if you are juggling the responsibilities of raising kids and keeping up with a busy lifestyle (which we all are!).

I grew up in a household of women (2 younger sisters). I have watched them my whole life struggle with their weight and body image, so I bring a good dose of patience and intuition when it comes to women and their unique struggles with weight.

And I have to be honest with you, I have had my own health struggles too. I had severe stomach issues when I was in high school and the doctors put on all kinds of medications that didn’t help at all. Add to that the debilitating fatigue I experienced when I was working on my 2nd Masters Degree, had a brand new baby in the house, all while trying to run my own personal training business.

There were many times when I’d lost my self-confidence and every aspect of my life was suffering and I just kept making excuses for why I couldn’t eat better or exercise more (or at all).

But one day I decided to stop making excuses and start making a change. I learned exactly what I needed to do regain my health, my vitality, my confidence, and my abs and all while still managing my day-to-day responsibilities AND committing to my wife and 3 kids.

Restoring Human Movement - General Exercise Answers For the Old Farts
play

10/17/18 • 78 min

I had a listener email a great question. He asked if I ever planned on addressing some of the concerns of active seniors. The 65+ group how wants to stay active as they were when they were younger.

I’m sure many of you know people like this... those older guys and girls who were complete badasses at their sport when they were younger and now they just want to keep active and participating in sports, regardless of age. The young at heart!

Since this is a huge area of conversation, I asked him to clarify some direct questions he and his “old fart” friends (he called them this) would like to know about.

He supplied me with a ton of talking points (listed below). Thank you Jack for supplying literally all of the topic points for this episode!

I hope this is helpful for you and your boys. Keep being active!

  1. Feet- chronic pain on one side and on both sides.
  2. Balance
  3. Flexibility
  4. Functional strength - Declining strength contributes to a lot of joint pain?
  5. What to do at the gym/fitness center. Machines are convenient but lack a lot. Along with that no training partners creates a challenge.
  6. Neck pain and mobility- this is a big problem when turning and looking for traffic when cycling.
  7. Knees and hip/glutes. Possibly look at linkage among foot-knee- hip and neck and shoulders.
  8. Heart consideration for seniors
  9. Diet/supplementation. Many older guys eat poorly and too much.
  10. Exercise modification since many of the above mentioned topics limit execution and which exercises older guys/gals can do correctly.

SHOW NOTES

In this podcast, I thought I’d do some casual, conversational stories because as I listened to the past few solo sessions, I realized something... I’ve been staying “um” way too much!

I want to break myself of that, so I’ll just roll with a few fun story style this time. These are stories about clinical practice, a few “A-ha moments,” and some fun days I’ve had at work with some great patients of mine.

In the future, I’m going to do way better at the “ums.” Pet Peeve.

Restoring Human Movement - What Does Oblique Strain Feels Like And How To Rehab It
play

07/25/18 • 43 min

SHOW NOTES

I thought I’d sit down and go through my story about how I developed an oblique strain playing baseball, how I rehabbed it successfully to play baseball again and what I would do differently next time (if there ever is a next time).

I posted an article and video about my story that has gotten a lot of attention on the web, which translates into people emailing me to ask me questions about what they should do.

They write me pretty frequently about how they found hope by reading my success story since, but they also reveal their frustration about how there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel for them. I find this very sad because all of these people can’t find anyone with experience in how to assist them in their recovery aside from the boilerplate “rest and see how it goes.”

I only used complete rest for a few weeks and then I took the active approach... That was more than 3 years ago now and I feel great.

Listen to this podcast if you know someone dealing with an oblique strain, abdominal, a “pulled muscle in their side,” or even a sports hernia.

Enjoy!

Restoring Human Movement - How Dr Stuart McGill Would Explain Back Pain To A New Patient
play

12/27/17 • 85 min

SHOW NOTES

Back pain isn’t the death sentence you think it is. Majority of people can get better with a little understanding and dedication.

Dr. Stuart McGill PhD is a spine biomechanist at the University of Waterloo. Over the years, he has conducted numerous lab experiments on the human spine to figure out how much load it can take, what motions cause it to become injured and more. He’s the author of some awesome books, such as Back Mechanic: The Secrets to a Healthy Spine your Doctor isn’t Telling You, which was written specifically for chronic low back patients to better understand and resolve their condition.

Dr Stuart McGill’s Bio: Dr. McGill is a professor emeritus, University of Waterloo, where he was a professor for 32 years. His laboratory and experimental research clinic investigated issues related to the causal mechanisms of back pain, how to rehabilitate back-pained people and enhance injury resilience and performance. This produced over 240 peer-reviewed scientific journal papers, many international awards, and has mentored over 40 graduate students during this scientific journey.

I’m honored to have him on this podcast session. Our goal today is to breakdown the common questions patients have about back pain. If you’re a healthcare provider you’ll know what questions I’m talking about:

  • Should I stretch my back?
  • Is my pain from a disc herniation?
  • How can I overcome a weak back?
  • Why does it hurt when I sit?

These are just a few of the topics. Basically this podcast was designed to fit the best spinal hygiene information within an hour and 15 min block. If you’re a healthcare provider, share this with your patients. If you’re a patient, share this with your doctor or your spouse with back pain.

Here's the start of our show notes. More can be found at P2sportsCare.com

[Dr. Sebastian Gonzales] So, first off is all low back pain created equal?

[Dr. Stuart McGill]You're starting with the big philosophical questions first, well I'm going to give you probably a big answer on this, with maybe three levels, some logic, some examples. Let me reverse that a tiny bit and say well have you ever heard of non-specific head pain or leg pain, is leg pain created equal, I mean we don't even put up with such a notion, it could be torn knee ligaments, vascular complaint, a cut or whatever, so this notion of back pain, it is so non-homogeneous, and what I mean by that is one person might have back pain because they've got a disc bulge, the next person might have it for an entirely different reason, so starting out with that logic and setpoint, all back pain has a cause, and if we can obtain a specific and precise diagnosis of the pain mechanism, then we can address it appropriately, so is it created equal, right off the top three contrasting examples of back pain come to mind, think of a person who is in their mid-20s, 30s, 40s, say they work sitting at a computer eight hours a day, sitting at the computer for 20 minutes gives them back pain, and yet they can stand up and go for a three or four mile walk and that would be therapeutic, now let's take the next person who is newly retired, and they have more of a stenosis or arthritic mechanism to their back pain, and interestingly enough the precise opposite occurs, walking starts to cause back pain, and sitting down is relieving, and then I can give a third example, let's take a young athletic team, you can take a football team or a baseball team, and when you study the back pain patterns you will see that they form cluster groups, for example one team might have four stress fractures on their roster, in their back, and those stressed fractures were not caused by baseball, it was caused by the strength and conditioning coach, who was getting them to do full range of motion loaded...

SHOW NOTES

In this podcast session we are going into how to test athletes for prevention of lower extremity injuries with over 80% certainty. Insane right?! Dr. Kolby Condos is going to talk about testing, movements and correction protocols with biofeedback.

What is biofeedback? Funny, it seems to be a rather undefined term as you’ll hear on the interview but this isn’t a bad thing. Many clinics are doing this already without even knowing it.

Studies:

Real-time optimized biofeedback utilizing sport techniques (ROBUST): a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Star Excursion Balance Test Anterior Asymmetry is Associated with Injury Status in Division I Collegiate Athletes

Some other topics we hit:

  • STARs Excursion Test
  • The Cerebellum
  • Non-traumatic ACL Injuries
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
  • Mudding
  • Steaks

Dr. Kolby Condos grew up in Lyman, WY and attended the University of Wyoming before deciding to become a Chiropractor. He then moved to Bloomington, MN and graduated with his bachelors in Biology and his Doctorate of Chiropractic from Northwestern Health Science University. Dr. Kolby is also a board certified Functional Neurologist, and received his education through the Carrick Institute and the International Association of Functional Neurology and Rehabilitation. He is also well versed in functional medicine and continues to pursuit higher education in metabolic conditions that may affect patients.

During his spare time, Dr. Kolby enjoys fishing and being on the lake during the summer and winter months. He also enjoys traveling back to his home state of Wyoming to spend time with his family, working on the family ranch, and hunting and fishing in the mountains. He is very excited to bring a new healthcare model to a highly under-served region of Minnesota.

Restoring Human Movement - Highlight Show Recapping The Last 99 Sessions
play

08/15/18 • 37 min

I thought I should take this opportunity in SESSION 100 to highlight the best of the best of the last 99 episodes and share some of my experiences in making this podcast for you all.

To be honest, the show is still evolving, I’m still evolving and the direction of the show is changing slightly.

Since I don’t make my living through being a podcast host, producer and promoter, I have fallen short on some organization aspects that are needed to make a podcast explode. I lose my direction many times when I am chatting on air... in the next 100 episodes, I plan on making the show a 2.0 version for y'all.

A few of the improvements I’ll personally be making an attempt to change are:

  • Less “ums”
  • More joking
  • Digging deeper into the reason why guests think they do
  • Getting the information from guest that other podcast interviewers left on the table

My focus will be better and I’ll become more loose with some of my jokes/topics. I think this show be as entertaining as it is educational.

Enjoy the ride and please share the show if you what it to continue for another 100 episodes.
