Hamstring Injuries In Distance Athletes With Nate Helming (The Run Experience)
01/17/18 • 66 min
Funny... I reached out to Nate since he has such great Youtube videos for runners but after emailing back and forth for a bit I realized we met 7 years ago at an Ironman 70.3 where I treated his hamstring. What a small world!
He has a great story about how he dealt with his hamstring injury and how he came to use those same methods to assist runners have better running experience.
Nate Helming founded The Run Experience with the goal of reaching a broader audience of runners and outdoor enthusiasts who want to be able to run and enjoy the outdoors and remain injury-free. He has helped athletes finish their first races, conquer new distances, overcome pre-existing injuries, set new PRs, reach the podium, and qualify for national and world level events.
Nate Helming is based in San Francisco and in addition to coaching runners and triathletes of all levels, he trains Olympic level cyclists, professional triathletes, elite mountain bikers, and national-level ultra runners on strength and mobility. Nate has traveled around the world to speak about better strength training for endurance athletes, and regularly publishes videos and articles on how runners can do it better! You can follow him on Instagram and Twitter and visit him in person at San Francisco Crossfit for one of his classes or one-on-one sessions.

Hamstring Anatomy Facts And Stories From Anonymous Guests
In this session we are going into some personal accounts of hamstring strains. In school, clinicians seem to get the textbook presentations... then they get out into the real world of healthcare and see all of the uniqueness of people and situations. People are unique... this is why case studies are great.
The patient’s I’m interviewing are not people I have confirmed have a hamstring injury but I did ask my network of people to find a “hamstring strain” for the interviews.
Do we need to know if they are truly hamstring strains or not? No, the takeaway from this session will be that this is what people experience when they “feel they have a hamstring strain.”
Other possible diagnosis for hamstring region pain are:
- Lumbar Radiculitis
- Referred Muscular Pain
- Sacroiliac joint Dysfunction
- Inflammatory/metabolic causes
Amongst a bunch of other things...

Training And Lifting With A Hamstring Injury Brenan Ghassemieh
Brenan Ghassemieh was introduced to me by a good friend, Dr. Cody Dimak (Session 31), as the perfect guy to speak about training responsibility around injuries. Since we’ve been focusing on hamstring injuries, we kept that as a central focus BUT it’s important to realize the body works as ONE UNIT and we can’t separate regions in training and rehab. You’ll hear this concept of centrality throughout the entire podcast.
A few major points/ concepts we come back to are:
- Hamstring tightness vs the “feeling of tightness”
- Exercises to train the hamstring that are safe
- If you’re feeling a hamstring “grab” during exercises then it’s not normal
- Training of the hamstring centers around posture, compound lifts and eccentrics
- Hamstring tightness is not always bad
- Assessment of an individual starts with observation!

Everything can be found in this single video
Assessments movements to watch:

Warm-ups or Movement Prep:
- Lateral Band Crab Walks
- Lateral Squat (just record once)
- Rotational Squat
- Side Bridge
- Pallof Press

- Curtsy Lunges

If you’re a clinician this is the perfect podcast session to share with that patient who’s been asking questions about what they can/can’t do in the gym with a hamstring strain.
If you’re a patient/athlete you need to be examined first and properly diagnosed with the CORRECT condition before you rehab. Movement is everything and often times you need to be cued properly by a professional.
