PodPod - Luke Moore: Taking a risk on the Ramble
play

07/25/23 • 48 min

When a podcast becomes an unexpected hit, its creators can leverage that success in a number of different ways. The creators of the Football Ramble podcast chose to parlay their success into the creation of Stak - a podcast production company-cum-network that operates a number of successful shows across a variety of different genres.

With more than 300 million listens across its portfolio, Stak is now a firm success, but the road to get there wasn’t easy. In this week’s episode, Rhianna Dhillon and Adam Shepherd sit down with COO and co-founder Luke Moore to discuss sneaking into radio studios, moving beyond sports shows, and the role of video in the company’s future.

Welcome to the very first episode of PodPod! This new podcast, from the publishers of Campaign, will explore the rich and vibrant podcasting industry, and the people that make it work. Every week, we’ll be delivering expert insights to accelerate your strategy, whether you’re behind the mic or behind the scenes.

For many podcasts, achieving sustainable growth is one of their key objectives - and this applies just as much to audiences and listeners as it does to advertising revenues. There are countless theories on how best to achieve this ambition, but one of the most popular is to focus on a topic that you’re genuinely passionate about, and trust that like-minded listeners will come to you.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to be a household name with an established public profile, but for PodPod’s debut guest Deborah Meaden, it’s her enthusiasm and commitment to the subject matter of her podcast The Big Green Money Show which drives the most sustainable engagement. This week, the Dragon’s Den investor and business guru sits down with Rhianna Dhillon to discuss the different aspects of business sustainability, how to fund a podcast, and why she’s so passionate about learning from her guests.

When 66% of consumers say they prefer podcasts to TV, and 76% say they’ve taken action after listening to a podcast ad, investment into the podcast space can look like a no-brainer for brands in 2023. Podcasting is a new medium, however, and incorporating it into your media mix – whether that’s launching your own branded podcast or advertising your brand on someone else’s – can be a daunting task.

This episode of Sounding Board, hosted by PodPod editor Adam Shepherd, explores how brands and agencies can make audio an avenue for revenue, from what podcast advertising can look like (and the benefits of each type), to the potential gains and current challenges of branded podcasting.

Featuring:

  • Adam Shepherd, Editor, PodPod
  • Victoria Handley, Lloyds Bank Brand Communications Lead, Lloyds Bank
  • Shaaf Tauqeer, Audience and Martech Manager, Easyjet
  • Simon White, Marketing Media Manager - Enterprise, BT
  • Anna Berry, Managing Director, EssenceMediacomX
  • Ed Couchman, Head of Sales, UK & Northern Europe, Spotify

PodPod - Jimmy McLoughlin: Hiring a podcast team
play

09/05/23 • 46 min

For podcasters seeking to build their show into a viable business, there eventually comes a point - if they’re lucky - where they need to start looking at bringing in additional staff to help manage their workload. However, if they’re coming from an independent or creative background, they may not have experience in the process of hiring a team.

Jimmy McLoughlin, creator of Jimmy’s Jobs Of The Future, is something of an expert in this, however; not only is his independent podcast focused on the world of careers and employment, his experience as a former business advisor within Downing Street gives him an added insight into building effective teams. On this week’s episode, Rhianna Dhillon and Adam Shepherd talk to McLoughlin about how he’s grown his team, why he’s a firm believer in (paid) internship programmes and what the future holds for Jimmy’s jobs.

For many podcasters, quitting their ‘day job’ to focus on podcasting full time is the ultimate goal - but when you’re still building an audience, that can feel a very long way off. For Mike Muncer, however, this dream is now a reality. In 2021, Muncer made the decision to put his career as a television producer on hold, concentrating all his effort on producing The Evolution of Horror.

The revenue from his podcast’s Patreon programme has allowed him to make podcasting his full-time career, and the community that has grown up around the podcast continues to thrive. In this week’s episode, PodPod host (and Muncer’s wife) Rhianna Dhillon interviews her husband, along with PodPod editor Adam Shepherd, about how he took the decision to go full-time, his future plans for expanding the brand, and why not all horror fans look like Rob Zombie.

Publishing your podcast on time can be a daunting task for the average weekly show - which is what makes the schedule maintained by The Smart 7 podcast all the more impressive. Created by Thronecast presenter Jamie East and audio producer Liam Thompson as a short-form daily news show for commuters, The Smart 7 delivers seven news stories in just seven minutes, published at 7 am every day. Since launching in 2020, the show has amassed over 11m downloads and the winning formula of the show has led to the creation of East and Thompson’s own audio production company Daft Doris.

The co-founders have since launched numerous adaptations of the daily podcast, including regional variants in Ireland and Germany, as well as vertical-specific shows like workout podcast The Sweat 7and gossip podcast The Heat 7. East and Thompson sat down on the latest PodPod episode with Rhianna Dhillon, Andrea Fox, and Matt Hill to talk about their hectic production schedule, how they manage to hit deadlines every day, and their decision to expand the show to a global market.

Hosted by Rhianna Dillon, and produced by Emma Corsham for Haymarket Business Media.

The British Podcast Awards are some of the most prestigious accolades in podcasting - but just what does it take to win one of these coveted trophies? In this special mini-series, PodPod editor Adam Shepherd is joined by British Podcast Awards co-founders Matt Hill and Matt Deegan to look at how podcasters can make their shows stand out and take home a British Podcast Award of their very own.

This time, we’re taking a deeper look at two of last year’s winning entries - Decode and Effin’ Hormones - analysing their audio submissions to find out what put them ahead of the competition, and how this year’s entrants can learn from their success, including their use of structure, and how their submissions brought across the podcasts’ personality and tone.

There are many ways to increase the listenership of a podcast and to get it in front of a bigger audience, but while social media posts, video clips and even out-of-home advertising all have a potential role to play in podcasters’ growth strategies, one of the most reliable tools in a podcasters’ belt is guest appearances.

Whether you bring guests onto your own show or appear on other people’s podcasts, guest spots are a fantastic way to increase the visibility of your show and generate more buzz around it, as well as potentially adding a greater level of expertise on complex topics. In this week’s episode, Matt Hill and Rhianna Dhillon are joined by Fiona Fraser, founder of podcast PR agency Pow PR, to discuss the power that a good guest appearance can have in boosting a show’s performance, as well as the best way to convince people to join you on your show in the first place.
