In today’s podcast, psychologist and consultant Daniel C. Lattimore will join us to explore The Incredibles. Get ready for a fun and hilarious ride as Daniel uses his background in stand-up comedy to push some buttons and make us laugh.

We’ll dive into important topics like work-life balance, setting boundaries, and dealing with accelerated grief. We’ll also touch on how capitalism affects our mental health, especially in terms of overwork, burnout, and struggling to find joy in our everyday lives.

We’ll talk about Mr. Incredible’s journey as he tries to balance being a hero, a husband, and a father. From fumbling through saving lives while trying to get to his wedding on time, to later losing his identity and struggling to adjust to “normal” life, we’ll see how these themes resonate with us all.

Daniel and I will explore how to recognize when we or our loved ones are feeling burned out or emotionally distant and how to support each other during tough times. Plus, we’ll talk about the real-life stress many Americans face, living paycheck to paycheck, and the anxiety that comes with missing work or losing financial security.

We’ll also have some fun, diving into relationship dynamics, including the old saying “happy wife, happy life,” and discussing how relationships and cultural differences shape our roles.

It’s a lighthearted yet insightful episode that touches on grief, humor, and resilience. We loved having Daniel on, and if you need consulting services, his team is there to help create healthier work environments. Shout out to Daniel’s supporters, especially his wife.

Thanks for listening, and take care of yourselves!

Different Spectrums Podcast ™️ - Daddy Daycare: Being a Girl Dad and a SIngle Parent [Ft. Jey Young]
play

12/12/24 • 99 min

Today, we’re excited to have Jey Young, a mental health professional, therapist, care manager, and the creator/host of the Young Dad Pod. 🎙️ We’re diving into Eddie Murphy’s Daddy Day Care and tying it to fatherhood, masculinity, and Jey’s experience as a proud girl dad. 👨‍👧

In Daddy Day Care, Eddie Murphy's character opens a daycare, and people find it unusual, even suspicious, to see men in caregiving roles. We’ll explore how this mirrors real-life biases about men being primary caregivers and why breaking these outdated norms is essential for healthier family dynamics. Jey and Dr. Naz also share their experiences as men of color in mental health and education fields, where they're often the minority and have to adjust their behavior to counter negative stereotypes.

Another big theme is breaking free from toxic masculinity. Jey’s experience shows a different, deeply loving narrative of fatherhood, far from the emotionally distant dad stereotype. We’ll discuss how anxiety over not meeting societal expectations can impact men’s mental health and their relationships with their children.

Jey also shares his challenges as a single dad balancing work, education, and fatherhood, challenging the stereotype of men of color being absent dads. We touch on representation and how men like Jey are working to shift the narrative around fatherhood, showing that many fathers, especially men of color, are present, loving, and committed.

We wrap up by highlighting the importance of representation and spaces where dads, especially men of color, feel supported and heard. Jey’s Young Dad Pod promotes men’s mental health and challenges harmful stereotypes, encouraging men to seek help and embrace all aspects of fatherhood.

Thanks for joining us! We hope today’s episode inspires and uplifts, showing that being a dad is both rewarding and essential. Don’t forget to check out Jey’s amazing work on Young Dad Pod. 🙌

Thanks for checking out Different Spectrums! We're a podcast led by licensed therapists and neurodivergent individuals who explore emotions in movies and shows. Our goal is to normalize mental health challenges and promote understanding. Today, we're joined by special guest therapist and trauma-informed psychologist, Dr. Pauline Yeghnazar Peck, to discuss the deeply emotional movie, The Persian Version. This serves as an official trigger warning, as the film contains graphic images, death, and suicidality. 🎬 Dr. Peck, who specializes in working with first-generation immigrant women, shares her insights on a key scene that mirrors her therapeutic approach. Being from an immigrant family herself, Dr. Peck understands the unique pressures and cultural dynamics these families face in America. 🌍👩‍⚕️ In the film, we see a young woman, who is pregnant after a one-night stand, and her mother, who experienced profound trauma in her past. The mother's journey involves moving to a foreign country, dealing with infidelity, and facing the heartbreak of a stillbirth. This trauma led her to silence her pain, impacting how she raised her children. 👶💔 The movie highlights the generational trauma and communication struggles within immigrant families. Dr. Peck explains how understanding the parents' past can provide context and foster empathy, even when their actions caused pain. It emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and processing trauma to break the cycle. 🧠💬 Dr. Nas shares his personal experience, reflecting on his mother's hardships and how it gave him a deeper understanding and gratitude for his own upbringing. This discussion aims to offer context and patience for those with immigrant backgrounds, helping listeners find empathy and healing. 🌱❤️ We hope you enjoy this podcast, filled with deep reflections and some laughs. Different Spectrums Podcast ™️

01/30/25 • 123 min

🎙️ Today's podcast features the rugged and inspiring collegiate strength and conditioning coach, Matt Sagar! Together, we dive into Rocky 3—specifically the iconic scene where Apollo Creed tells Rocky, “There is no tomorrow.” We break down what this means, why it’s such a powerful message, and how to deliver this mindset in coaching and life. From Matt’s perspective as a coach, we explore the nuances of motivating athletes and how important it is to connect with people in an era dominated by social media 📱. We discuss how coaches like Matt bring genuine kindness, passion, and excitement to their athletes, whether it’s through sports, teaching, or mentorship. 💪 We talk about what it’s like to be a safe and open presence for students, creating space for them to share their mental health struggles, including eating disorders and life challenges. We emphasize the importance of knowing when to refer students to the right professionals while still being their support system. ❤️

When discussing the iconic Rocky 3 scenes, we reflect on the importance of tackling fears, self-doubt, and procrastination. We often delay action because we’re scared of failing or sabotaging ourselves, but as Matt shares, success comes when you stop waiting for tomorrow because “tomorrow never comes.” ⏳ We also chat about the importance of working with women in athletics, promoting healthy habits, behaviors, and mindsets. 🤝 Reminiscing on our time at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, we laugh about moments when Matt would send students to my office, only for them to be confused by all the stuffed animals there! 🐻😂

Later, we discuss the powerful moments when Adrian confronts Rocky about his fears and how vulnerability plays a key role in overcoming challenges. 💔 We relate this to working with athletes, students, and even our own relationships, highlighting how fear often holds us back. Whether you're neurodivergent or not, fear and trauma can create “mental Yips,” keeping us stuck in a loop of doubt. 🌀 Lastly, we break down the fight scene where Rocky overcomes his PTSD-like flashbacks and pushes through the fear of failure, ultimately achieving victory. 🥊

Today, we dive deep into the beloved comfort show New Girl with our special guest therapist, Dr. Matt. This cult classic has captured the hearts of millions, many of whom are neurodivergent. We explore the characters' unique quirks and their neurodivergent traits. 🌟📺🧠

Dr. Matt starts by highlighting how characters like Schmidt exhibit traits of being gifted and neurodivergent, struggling with social skills, perfectionism, isolation, frustration, and OCD. He explains the difference between OCD and OCPD and how Schmidt fits the latter, affecting his relationships and growth. 🧹🧼👔

Next, we delve into Winston's character. Known for his imaginative nature, Winston exhibits autistic-like traits and struggles with teaching others. Dr. Matt discusses the challenges of being neurodivergent and gifted, and the difficulty in articulating unique thought processes. 🎶🐾🐱

We then focus on Nick Miller, Dr. Naz's personal favorite. Nick's struggle with expressing emotions and forming meaningful friendships is highlighted, especially within the context of masculinity. Dr. Matt introduces "pebbling," where small gestures of love accumulate into something significant, and how different communication styles can lead to misunderstandings. 🍺👬💬

Finally, we examine Jess and her difficulty in accepting compliments. This scene, while hilarious, resonates with many who feel insecure or undeserving of praise. Dr. Matt and Dr. Naz discuss why some people reject compliments and how this behavior is rooted in deeper feelings of unworthiness. 🎀💔😂

We hope you enjoy this episode and find comfort in the familiar faces of New Girl. If you're seeking support as a neurodivergent individual, consider reaching out to Dr. Matt. His website and Instagram offer valuable resources, including group coaching and therapy. 🌱🌍💖

🎙️ Today, we bring you an intense yet hilarious episode featuring our special guest, forensic clinical psychologist Dr. Lina Haji, as we dive into The Silence of the Lambs starring Anthony Hopkins. This conversation was so rich and layered that we had to break it into two episodes! In the first episode, Dr. Lina shares her unique experiences in maximum-security correctional facilities, dealing with crimes ranging from robbery to murder, and even high-profile cases of psychopathy and serial killers. Some stories are graphic, so a trigger warning is in place as Dr. Lina discusses the realities of protecting herself in these environments and navigating the complex world of criminality and psychopathology.

We explore the injustices within the prison system, touching on issues of racism, neglect, abuse, and profiteering at the expense of prisoners. Dr. Lina explains why she ultimately left the prison system—not due to the intensity of the prisoners' stories, but because of the systemic issues and bureaucracy that took a toll on her well-being. She now runs a private practice focusing on psychological assessments and serves as an expert witness in court.

In the second episode, we shift to an in-depth breakdown of The Silence of the Lambs. We analyze three key scenes, examining Hannibal Lecter’s manipulation, intelligence, and his eerie ability to control situations even from within a maximum-security prison. We discuss Clarice's dynamic with Hannibal, the psychological tactics at play, and how these scenes relate to Dr. Lina’s experiences with psychopaths and sociopaths. We also delve into Buffalo Bill’s character, his psychology, and the horrifying realities of serial killers, particularly how women are often the victims and how women perpetrators are usually accomplices.

And of course, there’s plenty of humor! Expect awkward moments, body parts talk, and, yes, Dr. Naz discussing feet in the context of the film. We hope these episodes leave you more educated on the criminal justice system and the human complexities within it, all while keeping you entertained. Don’t forget to check out Dr. Lina’s show Most Evil Prisoners on Amazon Prime, and stay tuned for the second part of our breakdown! 🍿🔍

Different Spectrums Podcast ™️ - Kevin Love Fund: A Discussion on Changing the World and Education Systems
play

11/14/24 • 110 min

Hey everyone! 🎙️ Welcome to an exciting episode of the Different Spectrums Podcast! Today, we’re doing something special—interviewing four amazing guests from the Kevin Love Fund. First, we chat with Bryanna and Lucia, who are leading efforts to promote mental health education across the U.S. and internationally. They're deeply involved in creating curriculums that focus on emotional regulation, anxiety, and teaching people how to speak openly about their struggles.

Next, we speak with Sara and Ellie, senior directors at the Fund, both of whom began as educators. They share their stories of how they transitioned from teaching to shaping mental health programs in schools. Together, we explore the Kevin Love Fund’s curriculum and how it’s helping students and educators alike learn that it's okay not to be okay. We'll also touch on the fund’s collaborations with Sony and Marvel, highlighting Miles Morales’ Spider-Man series, which ties into themes of vulnerability and strength.

We talk about coping strategies, and challenge you to think about what helps you regulate your emotions when you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed. This conversation is meant to remind you that everyone has a story, whether you’re an athlete, student, or just navigating life’s challenges.

In the second half, we dive deeper with Sara and Ellie into the pedagogy behind the Fund and their vision for mental health education. Dr. Naz also shares insights on how authentic connections—whether in therapy or education—drive the best outcomes, especially for people from marginalized communities. We emphasize the importance of empathy, connection, and how being real with others can build stronger, more respectful relationships.

Of course, there’s plenty of fun along the way—Dr. Naz teases Ellie, and Sara throws in movie quotes, keeping the conversation light and relatable. But at the core, this episode focuses on the mission of the Kevin Love Fund: creating a safe, open space for people to talk about their mental health.

If you’re inspired by today’s talk, we encourage you to check out the Kevin Love Fund’s resources and consider bringing their tools to your local schools or organizations. We’ve done the training ourselves and can personally say it’s transformative. If you need help getting connected, reach out—we’ll make sure you do!
