Today, we’re excited to be joined by the famous and insightful Dr. Drea to dive into the intricate themes of "X-Men '97." 🎙️ This episode focuses on Storm's journey as she grapples with anxiety and PTSD, particularly her struggle with negative self-talk. We relate these challenges to the everyday struggles people face with their internal demons and discuss ways to refocus and gain control. Dr. Drea emphasizes Storm's resilience and her ability to redefine herself, drawing parallels to how our clients find their inner strength and reclaim their "superpowers." We also delve into Beast's storyline, highlighting his frustration with society's treatment of mutants. Unlike others, Beast cannot blend in due to his appearance, which deepens his self-hatred and sense of alienation. Yet, despite his struggles, he remains committed to protecting humans. Dr. Drea shares one of Beast's poignant moments when he quotes Martin Luther King Jr., showcasing his growing discontent with the ongoing genocide against mutants. Dr. Drea introduces the concept of the five Fs—fight, flight, freeze, fawn, and friendship—as responses to trauma and stress. We discuss how neurodivergent individuals and those with mental health or trauma issues often find solace in friendships with others who share similar experiences. We also explore the fight response, particularly among people of color, who may resort to anger and violence as primary modes of communication due to societal pressures and lack of emotional regulation education. We hope you all enjoy this episode featuring Dr. Drea. Please support her by visiting her pages and clicking on her links. She will be at Comic-Con interviewing voice actors from "X-Men '97" and leading a special panel in the coming weeks. Be sure to check out her own podcast, "The Arkham Podcast Sessions." Turtles All The Way Down: An OCD Discussion [Feat. Stephanie Olano]
Let our sponsor, BetterHelp, connect you to a therapist who can support you - all from the comfort of your home. Visit https://betterhelp.com/dsp and enjoy a special discount on your first month. In today's podcast, we're joined by guest therapist Stephanie Olano as we dive into the movie adaptation of the hit novel "Turtles All the Way Down." 🐢📚 Stephanie chose this film because it features two Latina women, one of whom battles severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We'll explore what OCD really looks like beyond the stereotypes of organizing or hand washing. We'll delve into intrusive thoughts and hypervisualization, showing how these can dominate someone's mind, causing immense pain and fear. 😟🧠 Author John Green, who has OCD himself, infused his experiences into the main character, making this portrayal particularly authentic. We'll look at four main scenes. First, we see the character's phobia of getting sick from bacteria in a creek, and how her friend helps distract her with random facts about twilight. 🌊 This leads to a discussion on how to support friends with OCD and avoid becoming a martyr. Next, we discuss economic status and privilege, noting how even people of color or those with lower socioeconomic status can have certain privileges over others. 💵💬 The last two scenes come with a trigger warning ⚠️. One depicts a heated argument about living with mental health issues, leading to a severe accident. 🚑 The main character ends up in the hospital, terrified of getting sick and starts eating hand sanitizer. 🏥🧴 This graphic depiction highlights the debilitating nature of OCD, showing how intrusive and consuming it can be. We'll also cover treatments for OCD, how to support a friend with the condition, and how to seek therapy. 🩺💡 This episode aims to provide a realistic view of OCD and offer understanding and support for those affected. Thank you for tuning in. 🎧 We hope you learned something new and enjoyed our guest therapist Stephanie, with her dedication to destigmatizing mental health and supporting people of color and Latinas worldwide. 🌍❤️🎬 Thanks for checking out Different Spectrums!
