In particular, we'll be focusing on the character of Mark and his profound struggle with self-hatred after causing harm to another person. Mark's journey is one that many can relate to—a spiral of obsession and self-loathing, where one feels irredeemable and destined to be forever haunted by their mistakes. We'll dissect this harmful ideology and challenge the notion that growth and change are impossible. 🌱 Through Mark's experiences, we'll explore themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the power of personal transformation. But our exploration doesn't stop there. We'll also delve into the character of Adam Eve, who grapples with her own challenges of trying to help others while inadvertently making things worse. Her struggles mirror those of many who seek to do good but find themselves mired in unintended consequences. 🤔 Amidst the turmoil and complexity of these characters' journeys, we'll uncover unexpected sources of wisdom and insight. Sometimes, even the most unlikely individuals can offer profound words of maturity, vulnerability, and compassion. 🙌 Furthermore, we'll discuss the importance of emotional regulation, drawing from Dr. Naz's expertise in trauma recovery. He'll share his own personal journey of overcoming past traumas and highlight the transformative power of practices like meditation and controlled breathing. 🧘‍♂️ These tools offer invaluable support for navigating the turbulent waters of anxiety, self-doubt, and self-hatred. Turtles All The Way Down: An OCD Discussion [Feat. Stephanie Olano]

Let our sponsor, BetterHelp, connect you to a therapist who can support you - all from the comfort of your home. Visit https://betterhelp.com/dsp and enjoy a special discount on your first month. In today's podcast, we're joined by guest therapist Stephanie Olano as we dive into the movie adaptation of the hit novel "Turtles All the Way Down." 🐢📚 Stephanie chose this film because it features two Latina women, one of whom battles severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We'll explore what OCD really looks like beyond the stereotypes of organizing or hand washing. We'll delve into intrusive thoughts and hypervisualization, showing how these can dominate someone's mind, causing immense pain and fear. 😟🧠 Author John Green, who has OCD himself, infused his experiences into the main character, making this portrayal particularly authentic. We'll look at four main scenes. First, we see the character's phobia of getting sick from bacteria in a creek, and how her friend helps distract her with random facts about twilight. 🌊 This leads to a discussion on how to support friends with OCD and avoid becoming a martyr. Next, we discuss economic status and privilege, noting how even people of color or those with lower socioeconomic status can have certain privileges over others. 💵💬 The last two scenes come with a trigger warning ⚠️. One depicts a heated argument about living with mental health issues, leading to a severe accident. 🚑 The main character ends up in the hospital, terrified of getting sick and starts eating hand sanitizer. 🏥🧴 This graphic depiction highlights the debilitating nature of OCD, showing how intrusive and consuming it can be. We'll also cover treatments for OCD, how to support a friend with the condition, and how to seek therapy. 🩺💡 This episode aims to provide a realistic view of OCD and offer understanding and support for those affected. Thank you for tuning in. 🎧 We hope you learned something new and enjoyed our guest therapist Stephanie, with her dedication to destigmatizing mental health and supporting people of color and Latinas worldwide. 🌍❤️🎬 Thanks for checking out Different Spectrums!
