Different Spectrums Podcast ™️

Hey everyone! 🎙️ Welcome to an exciting episode of the Different Spectrums Podcast! Today, we’re doing something special—interviewing four amazing guests from the Kevin Love Fund. First, we chat with Bryanna and Lucia, who are leading efforts to promote mental health education across the U.S. and internationally. They're deeply involved in creating curriculums that focus on emotional regulation, anxiety, and teaching people how to speak openly about their struggles.

Next, we speak with Sara and Ellie, senior directors at the Fund, both of whom began as educators. They share their stories of how they transitioned from teaching to shaping mental health programs in schools. Together, we explore the Kevin Love Fund’s curriculum and how it’s helping students and educators alike learn that it's okay not to be okay. We'll also touch on the fund’s collaborations with Sony and Marvel, highlighting Miles Morales’ Spider-Man series, which ties into themes of vulnerability and strength.

We talk about coping strategies, and challenge you to think about what helps you regulate your emotions when you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed. This conversation is meant to remind you that everyone has a story, whether you’re an athlete, student, or just navigating life’s challenges.

In the second half, we dive deeper with Sara and Ellie into the pedagogy behind the Fund and their vision for mental health education. Dr. Naz also shares insights on how authentic connections—whether in therapy or education—drive the best outcomes, especially for people from marginalized communities. We emphasize the importance of empathy, connection, and how being real with others can build stronger, more respectful relationships.

Of course, there’s plenty of fun along the way—Dr. Naz teases Ellie, and Sara throws in movie quotes, keeping the conversation light and relatable. But at the core, this episode focuses on the mission of the Kevin Love Fund: creating a safe, open space for people to talk about their mental health.

If you’re inspired by today’s talk, we encourage you to check out the Kevin Love Fund’s resources and consider bringing their tools to your local schools or organizations. We’ve done the training ourselves and can personally say it’s transformative. If you need help getting connected, reach out—we’ll make sure you do!

undefined - Angles in the Outfield: A Discussion on Believing in Yourself and Having Support

Angles in the Outfield: A Discussion on Believing in Yourself and Having Support

Hey everyone! Today, it’s a solo podcast with just me, Dr. Naz, and Spencer 🎙️. We’re diving into the Disney classic Angels in the Outfield, a film that’s not only heartwarming but also packed with lessons on relationships, trauma, and the importance of chosen family.

We explore the themes of believing in yourself and how the belief of others can help spark that inner belief. It’s about more than just baseball—it’s about how team chemistry, whether in sports or the workplace, can be healing. The support systems we build—our friends, coworkers, and loved ones—are the safety nets that keep us going through the highs and lows of life.

There are two key scenes we’ll dive into. One highlights the power of rituals and routines, especially for those of us who need them to self-regulate, much like the pitcher who goes through a specific process to throw the perfect pitch. Another scene features a shy boy who literally runs home when told to, giving us a heartwarming (and humorous) reminder of how the neurodivergent experience often includes taking things literally.

We also talk about trauma, PTSD, and triggers. There’s a powerful moment when a young boy can’t get into a car due to past trauma, reflecting the way difficult experiences can make seemingly simple tasks feel overwhelming. This scene resonates deeply with those who’ve faced traumatic events and shows how selective mutism and the fear of connection can manifest in the wake of abuse or neglect.

But it’s not all heavy—there’s joy in seeing the team come together, improving with a little help from the angels until they eventually succeed on their own. This parallels the journey in therapy: starting with guidance and support, but eventually growing strong enough to fly solo. It’s a beautiful metaphor for healing and personal growth, something Spencer and I deeply resonate with.

The final scenes show the coach promising to adopt the boys, offering them the stability and love they’ve never known. It’s a touching moment that illustrates how caregiving can be healing for both sides. As caregivers, whether as therapists, coaches, or friends, we give out healing—but we also receive it in return.

We wrap up with the championship win, a symbol of victory not just for the team but for everyone who’s ever overcome their personal challenges. We hope you enjoy the mix of fun, emotion, and deep reflection in today’s podcast. Take care of yourselves, and remember—healing is a two-way street 💛.

One Piece: Living with a code, fighting for your friends, and special interest [Ft. Micheal Ruffin]

Today, we're excited to have Michael Ruffin 🎉, founder and director of Dueling Minds, and a well-known ADHD coach, join us. We're diving into a fun conversation about autism through the lens of the anime classic One Piece (not the live-action, but the OG anime). Specifically, we’re going to explore three key scenes and unpack what they tell us about autism and neurodivergent experiences.

In the first scene, Michael highlights Luffy’s strong moral code ⚔️. We discuss how many autistic folks, though not all, hold a set of firm values, often seeing things in black and white. Luffy’s pacifism shows how he refuses to fight, even when bullied or laughed at, sticking to his principles. This leads us to talk about the real-life experiences of autistic people who face violence but choose nonviolence, sometimes because they don’t fully recognize the danger they’re in.

Next, we talk about how Luffy fights back only when a friend is hurt, challenging the hierarchy of power. Many autistic folks, like Luffy, don’t always abide by power structures or view them as important. Michael shares his own story about not treating his boss as superior at work, and how that caused friction. Dr. Nas also jumps in, sharing how he treats everyone equally, which sometimes confuses others given his size and presence 💪.

Lastly, we dive into special interests 💡—a big topic in the autism community. Luffy’s love of bugs reminds us of the tranquility many neurodivergent folks find in nature or specific hobbies. We discuss our own special interests and how they provide peace and grounding in a chaotic world 🌱.

Don't forget to check out Michael's nonprofit, Dueling Minds 🧠! It offers amazing support groups, well-being resources, and coaching. Plus, he's an active gamer 🎮 who streams and loves connecting with others. If you're seeking support or just want to chat, be sure to reach out and say hello! 😊

Thanks for checking out Different Spectrums! We're a podcast led by licensed therapists and neurodivergent individuals who explore emotions in movies and shows. Our goal is to normalize mental health challenges and promote understanding.
