Pete Cann the Laughter Man

On this episode of the Better Presentations More Sales Podcast I’m joined by Pete Cann the Laughter Man.

Pete tells the story of how he became the Laughter Man after attending a festival and discovering almost by accident Laughter Yoga.

During the episode Pete will get you laughing, he will also explain the benefits of laughter to you and your business, and how a laughter yoga session can help with creative thinking business planning.

Laughter can be contagious and in business sometimes we take ourselves too seriously, and when we do laugh and humour comes into the situation think about how it makes us feel, and how it can enhance our relationships with customers and potential customers and if we are doing presentations with our audience.

Laughter doesn’t need to be about telling jokes, indeed Laughter Yoga has got nothing to do with telling jokes.

Pete offers 30 minute Laughter Yoga sessions on Zoom as well as one-to-one sessions.

Better Presentations More Sales - #170: 4 ways to start a stand out 'Elevator Pitch' when you go networking
play

06/28/21 • 17 min

How often when you go networking do you hear someone start their elevator pitch by saying: my name is….I'm from….we do….and we're different because.......
I'm sure you hear that all the time
Indeed is that how you start your elevator pitch?
So in this episode I'm going to share with you for always to start your elevator pitch which will be different to everybody else and therefore help you stand out:

  • Question – how many of you…….?
  • Stat – did you know…….
  • Topical – did you see…….
  • Observational– have you noticed how……

The trick is to say these things as the first things you say so don't be tempted to say my name is and I got a big question for you go straight into the question or the stat etc...

You can then bringing yourself later on and  don't forget if you are doing this virtually your name will be on the screen anyway stop

So remember to prepare, to practice and then to follow-up anyone shows any interest in you based on your new exciting elevator pitch

Better Presentations More Sales - #171: What can business learn from Andy Murray and tennis at Wimbledon?
play

07/05/21 • 15 min

I recorded this episode a day or two after watching Andy Murray win his late evening second-round tennis match at Wimbledon. By the time this is published he will have lost in the third round.
Andy Murray has I imagine a coach, a fitness trainer, a mentor, a dietician – indeed a whole entourage of support crew including during that second round match the crowd.
So who is your crowd?  Who are you turning to when times are tough and you need help to raise your game and overcome a tricky situation.
Often in business we invest in help with technical skills such as accountancy/bookkeeping, our website, our social media activity, design and other admin tasks but how often do we invest in personal development such as in a coach or trainer?
During the match there was an enforced break of around 18 minutes when the Wimbledon roof was closed and it was after the break when Andy Murray really came into his own, the break gave him an opportunity to re-energise and refocus so again the question to you is are you taking a break when times get tough – and that doesn't have to be two weeks on the beach it could simply me going for a walk or run and then returning re-energised and refocused ready to tackle whatever is in front of you.

Simon’s business is called ‘Elevate Your Greatness’ and in this episode Simon shares some top ideas around how to become a better communicator, particularly when you are presenting.

He will share some thoughts and ideas around how to overcome the fear of presenting and he also shares his concept of a three-minute speaking masterpiece where the whole idea is based around one idea with a maximum of three points

Simon’s top tips which you will hear in the podcast are:

  1. Think in 3’s – it is much easier for your audience to take away three things rather than 33 things regardless of how long your presentation is
  2. Make sure you have some passion and belief in your presentation because that is what will create a response from your audience
  3. Start with 15 to 20 seconds of silence – this will give your audience a chance to engage with you simply because nothing is happening

Shawn was a former war correspondence who has taken the systems and processes that he observed from the battlefield into business boardrooms

Shawn’s ambition is to help companies replace hope with certainty when it comes to sales by having systems and processes in place that are reliable, consistent and easily utilised if sales personnel change

Shawn also shares three great questions to ask after each sales meeting:

What could I have done differently now the meeting is over and I know in hindsight how it was going to run?

What should I have known about the company in advance of the meeting?

And given the outcome of the meeting what could my company have done to help me be more successful?

Shawn also reminds us that we should focus our debrief just around the occasions when we don’t win the business but also around those occasions when we do win the business

Shawn suggests you track the challenges you face every day so that you can learn from them and also learn how to get better at them

Tyler began his performing career at a very young age and 10 years ago having retired from being a performer and working in the health and safety industry he almost by chance became a keynote speaker.

Tyler is a regular speaker at conferences and events and in this episode he shares how to overcome stage fright, which as we all know many people suffer from when they think about doing a presentation. Tyler turns this on its head by suggesting that although most people think they are afraid of public speaking what they are really afraid of is public judgement, that their audience will think that they are no good.

Tyler reminds us that we are there is a speaker because we are the experts in our field and the audience is looking forward to as sharing our expertise with them, they want us to do well as a presenter because that will be better for them.

Tyler concluded the episode by sharing a couple of top tips to do with networking suggesting that instead of going networking thinking it’s a great way to find new business go on the basis that it’s an opportunity to look for strategic partners people that will benefit from working with you and  who in turn will be of benefit when you work with them, including sharing contacts and recommendations and Tyler also suggested that in your 30 to 60 seconds introduction or what is sometimes known as your elevator pitch that you begin by focusing on pain point rather than talking about yourself, something that you will have heard in several episodes on this podcast so good to get it confirmed by someone such as Tyler

Tyler mentions his book: ‘The Power to Speak Naked’ and here is the link to acquiring by pre-ordering (if you read this prior to Sept 7th 2021) through a local bookseller: https://bookshop.org/books/the-power-to-speak-naked-how-to-speak-with-confidence-communicate-effectively-win-your-audience/9781631954450

In this episode of the Better Presentations More Sales podcast Trevor challenges you to share your expertise, to offer advice and tips for free as a way of raising your profile and building trust in your personal brand.
Last week I was at a business event in Penzance where the guest speaker was Pete Matthew of MeaningfulMoney.TV - Pete is a financial advisor who started recording advice videos in 2011 before launching a podcast which has over 5 million downloads. Pete was a mentor and inspiration for me launching this podcast.
Pete's message at the event centred around giving your expertise, advice and tips away for free via videos or podcasts or articles.
That inspired this episode.
So here are 4 ways you can share your expertise and raise your profile.

  1. When you go networking take a top tip that will be helpful to other attendees and she it before you talk about yourself.
  2. Post a top tip everyday for a week on LinkedIn. Do it in a 60-90 second video. You can easily shoot that via the Linked In app on your phone. Take the 5 tips and turn them into a LinkedIn article and post them the following week.
  3. Offer to be a speaker at networking and other business events. Offer 10-15 minutes of useful tips and ideas - could be the same 5 tips from your videos
  4. Offer to be a guest on a relevant podcast - again sharing those 5 tips

All very easy to do. You just need to commit to making it happen. It will be worth it. Especially if you repeat the sequence each month.

If you have a top business tip for 2022 why not share it on this podcast. Record your tip in 60-90 seconds - use the memo app on your phone and then email it to [email protected]. The listener top tips episode will go out mid -December
