This is a podcast about deciphering human behavior and understanding why people do the things they do. I, Zach Elwood, talk with people from a wide range of fields about how they make sense of human behavior and psychology. I've talked to jury consultants, interrogation professionals, behavior researchers, sports analysts, professional poker players, to name a few. There are more than 135 episodes, many of them quite good (although some say I'm biased). To learn more, go to PeopleWhoReadPeople.com.

Warning: This might be hard to hear. It was hard to LIVE. Having an honest dialogue about what active addiction was like isn’t pretty, but I’m hoping that even if you come for the train wreck you’ll stay for the recovery conversation. Settle in for notes from the thick of two decades of substance abuse, mental health struggles, romantic obsession, rehabs, hospitals, institutions and general despair, to the last few years of coming out the other side. I've had a lot of time to collect insight about recovery, and to stay sober I had to be as obsessed with getting better as I was with staying sick, and I hope to share some of that insight with you. Through writing a memoir about my recovery from alcoholism and mental illness, I realized, my recovery is an ongoing process, and also an interactive one, based on shared insight and dialogue. So why would a book about those things be any different? I want to share my story while engaging in a conversation about the nature of addiction and recovery, to share tools and crowdsource far more wisdom than I could export on my own. Join me as I read chapters from my memoir and join the discussion about recovery, addiction, mental health, spirituality and humanism. I invite you to e-mail any questions or comments to: [email protected]

What is Fugues? The quick answer - it’s The Moth with neuroscience and music (and a bit of sci-fi...) The detailed answer - a fugue, conventionally, is: (1) a piece of music with multiple melodies played at the same time and... (2) a trance state where a person experiences amnesia, and loses their sense of self. Both uses of the word have a beginning, middle and end. Taking a bit of license, each story we tell in this podcast will be called a fugue. And each fugue will illustrate a handful of mental ingredients. A fugue will also refer to any temporary mental state one is in. For example, you are currently in a podcast description-reading fugue. Hosted by Gabriel Berezin, some fugues will be autobiographical, others will come from special guests, and others may be...science-fictional. Episodes 1, 2, and 5 are great places to start!

The American mental health system is broken beyond repair. Rather than trying to tweak a system which fails everyone, it is time to commit to a bold vision for a better way forward. This podcast explores the American system against the plumb line of an international best practice, recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), in Trieste, Italy. The 40-year old Trieste model demonstrates how a community-based treatment system upholds the human rights of the people served. The Trieste story is anti-institutional and models the therapeutic value of social connection. Topics will address contemporary challenges in the American failed mental health system as contrasted with the Italian approach toward accoglienza – or radical hospitality – as the underpinning of their remarkable culture of caring for people. Interviews will touch upon how the guiding principles of the Italian system – social recovery, whole person care, system accountability, and the human right to a purposeful life – are non-negotiable aspects if we are to have any hope of forging a new way forward in our American mental health system. This podcast is curated and hosted by Kerry Morrison, founder and project director of Heart Forward LA (https://www.heartforwardla.org/). Heart Forward is collaborating with Aaron Stern at Verdugo Sound as the technical partner in producing this podcast (https://www.verdugosound.com). Hi friends! Welcome to THINK OUT LOUD WITH ME, a chat-cast produced, hosted, and humbly offered by yours truly, Natalie P., from my neck of the woods to YOU...in YOURS. I’m taking full advantage of a Universally-accepted, irrevocable license to be curious, and held by every single one of us to engage others in constructive and enlightening conversation.
After years of internal chatter, white boards full of wondering, logs of silent suffering, and physical and mental close calls, I’m exhausted keeping it all together by myself. THINK OUT LOUD WITH ME is my own search for Self, and the clarity, connection, community, and congruence I know I'll discover in the stories and perspectives and beauty of others in search of the same.
In so doing, if I help you find your voice...ignite your curiosity...nudge you just a bit in your own favor...well, shit. I’d like that. I’d like that a LOT.
Thanks for listening.

The history of the sterilisation of women with learning disabilities is highly controversial and remains, to a large extent, a secret. Preventing intellectually disabled women from having children was actively canvassed across the Western world in the early 20th century as a solution to the ‘problem of mental deficiency’. In some countries, dark, forbidding institutions enforced sterilisations and actively prevented social and sexual activity among residents. But as we hear in this moving programme presented by Liz Tilley from The Open University, the reasons behind decisions to sterilise these women were complex and sometimes unexpected. As new research is being published and the decision-making capacity of people with learning disabilities is being taken more seriously, women have started to tell their own stories. We hear the voices of the survivors themselves, in particular Leilani Muir, who brought a landmark case against the Province of Alberta, Canada, in the 1990s for wrongful sterilisation in the 1959 - and won.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 60 million people live in rural areas and it has been well documented that these Americans face specific challenges to accessing, utilizing, and paying for quality healthcare. Despite 20% of Americans living in rural areas, only 10% of the nation’s physicians practice in rural areas, with access to and availability of mental health specialists, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, and social workers significantly lacking. Integrating mental and medical health in these rural areas has been a focus of many states to provide access and health education to providers and patients. It is critical that best practices implemented throughout the nation are shared among clinicians so that all providers can collaborate and improve their knowledge and performance, gain insights to the latest evidence, and provide optimal care services to patients and their families. Evolving technology has provided new opportunities to provide access to services and address barriers presented to patients and physicians practicing in remote rural communities. As technology improves, costs decrease and access increases—these forces help to create opportunities for increased collaborative care management. This neuroscienceCME Webcast will present key insights to better integrate primary care and mental health services, and address the unique challenges and performance gaps identified in rural populations.

Many of these have merit, but they are often missing key elements for long-lasting sobriety. It isn’t enough to just “stop watching porn”. Addiction is a symptom of deeper, underlying challenges that need to be addressed through a total overhaul of lifestyle and mindset.
My mission isn't just to help people quit porn, but to help them build this recovery mindset and lifestyle using hands-on, daily exercises that retrain their brain and forge new habits that last a lifetime. Once this mindset and lifestyle is established, the desire for porn naturally fades.

I want to talk about what no one else wants to talk about... Children with mental illness.Raising a child who is ‘different’ from the other kids takes a great mental and emotional toll on the parents. They are worn out and pushed to the brink, totally exhausted. Many are tapped out financially and in some cases, they have had to quit their jobs or take lesser ones to be there for the next episode when their child can’t cope. There is little or no support from a system caught up in process and willfully lacking in parental resources. As a parent of a challenging child, you can also brace yourself for the stigma of a lifetime. We look like the accomplice to this very badly behaved, poorly mannered and emotionally unstable child. If you don’t have a diagnosis it’s worse. If you don’t have money it’s worse still. So much of what we require to help our children isn’t covered by extended health insurance. The general parent community is unsupportive at best; hostile and judgmental at its worst. This compounds the pain and stress we live through every day. We go through things very few parents can relate to.This podcast is a collection of my interviews with kids affected by challenges, parents of those kids, and even medical professionals from the mental health community. In many cases, the name of the child has been changed or last names of the contributors omitted to maintain privacy for themselves and their children.

Discovering Our Scars Podcast is all about one thing: honest conversations. Steph and Beth talk about things that make most people uncomfortable (religion, mental illness, sexual abuse, and more). Steph and Beth became friends when they poured their hearts out in a 12-Step recovery small group. Neither was dealing with addiction—but both had hurts, habits, and hang-ups they needed to address. Steph’s journey is detailed in her book, Discovering My Scars, and that’s the inspiration for the podcast. While the podcast is inspired by Steph’s book, the hosts expand on subjects that make each person unique. The mission of the podcast is to help people embrace the “embarrassing” parts of their lives and learn to love and value all of themselves. On the podcast, the hosts share their own experiences and invite guests to broaden the conversation by contributing their own wisdom. As in Steph’s book, the podcast does not “tell you what to do,” rather, it has the ability to inspire people through the hosts’ honest and heartfelt approach.Podcast website: dospod.us

Fun conversations about therapeutic ketamine and mental health. **No medical advice** We give practical tips from a patient's perspective and discuss the more profound insights people can gain from their experiences with ketamine and other psychedelic medicines. Co-hosts Molly Dunn (patient) and Lynn Schneider (ally) are old friends who usually live on opposite sides of the world. Molly, a disabled writer from Chicago with treatment resistant depression and other chronic illnesses, has been a ketamine patient for several years. Lynn, our resident genius empath, is a longtime friend, relative, and ally of people who struggle with mental health challenges. Together, we fight stigma, go on tangents, and crack each other up.
