Old friends discuss local legends starting with the ones they know from their home state. Legendary people, places, and random facts about Indiana abound here. While we started in Indiana, the world is full of legends and we want to explore them. Laughter, history, and spooky facts included. We like getting down to the bottom of these legends and giving both the facts as well as the lore. If history and interesting stories, sometimes with a spooky bent, are up your alley, so are we! We like telling each other stories and hope you will like them too! Oh, one more thing, you want ghosts? That's how you get ghosts...

Tori leads off this episode in Illinois in a famous haunted space, the Coles County Poor Farm, otherwise known as Ashmore Estates. She teased this story last episode with the Parke County Poor Asylum in Indiana. The timeline for this property is long and well documented, and well represented in the media. Covered by several paranormal investigators in both print and screen. From an actual poor farm to it’s current state of as a haunted attraction available for investigations. Did I mention there are TWO cemeteries there? GH did a very good job debunking some of the claims of hauntings at this locale. Krysti brings us back to Indiana with the odd story of Watson Brown and his wandering corpse. The son of the abolitionist John Brown died during the Raid at Harpers Ferry and the roundabout way he was returned home after his death. Krysti grabbed another story from home as well, which sent us back to Irvington and the tale of another haunted house, the Forrest Howe House now known as the Irvington United Methodist Church. Krysti gets to tell ghost stories with this one. Floating women through locked doors and getting locked into rooms without locks. From there we get a bonus story from Scotland (thanks again Ghost) and the tale of the miniature coffins.

Krysti leads with Campbelltown and Fisher’s ghost. Fredrick Fisher was an Englishman that was sent to Australia due to being passed fake bank notes. Fredrick scored his ticket of leave and started buying up properties. Fred got himself in trouble again and went straight to jail. Cue a shady partner Worral getting the power of attorney over all Fisher’s property. Fisher promptly disappeared and eventually was found dead on Worral’s property. Cue ghost stories and a 10 day festival in Campbelltown. Next up, Tori covers a cemetery of course. Rookwood Cemetery is located right outside of Sydney and is huge. Cue city name changes as well as the cemeteries change. This is still in use today. As a Victorian cemetery, it’s set up different than the cemeteries than the ones in the States. Ghosts and goats are found there too. It’s the largest cemetery in the Southern Hemisphere. She touches on some of the famous folks buried there and the spiritualist Davenport Brothers.

My Rice Crispies are talking, but what are they saying?! Trains, trains, lots of trains! Happy holidays all and welcome to our first megasode! We were still doing a remote recording with Malcom, Chuck, and Chase for this one. Krysti opens us up with Union Station in downtown Indy. The first union station in the US, this paved the way for train stations to become easier to access for folks. This historic building has gone through several iterations to serve the foks in Indy in a variety of ways. As a hotel this is probably not going to be a destination for Malcom or Krysti due to the ghosts/manikins. Malcom bridges the middle with the Mumler photos and the story of the great spirit photography trend/con. Mumler paved the way for several other folks that capitalized on people’s grief for their own profit. Tori rounds out the megasode with the story of the London Necropolis Railway and Brookwood Cemetery. Another result of the lack of burial space in London proper at the time, this railway and train station were iconic in London from the 1850s and decades later.

TRIGGER WARNING: One of the tales in this episode mentions a tragedy at a performance and briefly talks about the patrons at the show being crushed. We recorded this episode before the AstroWorld tragedy and our hearts go out to those effected by it.
Malcom joins us for another episode! Tori starts us off with the story of Jane Addams and Hull House in Chicago. A mainstay of social justice and reform Jane made a place to help those less fortunate than her and built a community around it. Enter the devil baby of Hull House. This tale has many parallels with another devil baby from New Jersey. Continuing on smartly Tori tells the tale of the Iriquois Theatre, also in Chicago, and the fire that changed fire codes round the country. This theater made the mistake that the Titantic did and declared it “fire proof.” In the span of 45 minutes the theater was gutted and 602 of the 1700 patrons at the production had lost their lives. Death Alley behind the theatre continues to see paranormal activity to this day. Krysti moves on to Devil’s Backbone and Devil’s Bake Oven in Grand Tower Illinois. River Pirates, indigenous peoples, and poor choices by settlers abound in this tale. Esmerelda and her lost love seems to still hang out at the rock. Another disastrous love story later, we have hordes of ghosts wading up onto shore to hand a prophecy to a child. Another revenge story goes with the location as well. Enter Krys’s next tale of a corrupt religious leader that fled from Germany to the area around Devil’s Bake Oven. Let’s just say this man had several choices after being caught in his corrupt behavior and deciding that gtfo was the best option. Several of the stories have odd tie ins with some of our other stories.

Happy spooky season! Krysti has been itching to tell everyone her story this episode! An Indiana legend, James Whitcomb Riley is the subject of conversation. A poet that wrote such poems as Little Orphant Annie and The Raggedy Man. This man’s poetry was a staple of Indiana children’s studies and known to adults as well. His life was very interesting and so was his career. Continuing on with the spooky vibe, Tori covers the most haunted house in Australia, the Monte Cristo Homestead. The sheer amount of ghosts in this house makes it a prime topic for horror movies. Many of the ghost hunting shows have covered this location and it a notorious hot spot for paranormal of activity. We get a bonus quickie about the Roads Hotel in Atlanta IN ands it’s ghostly inhabitants/history.

Tori leads off with the tale of the Overlook Hotel, well actually the two hotels that were both the basis for the hotel made famous by Stephen King. The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO was where Stephen King stayed at and had nightmares in. This hotel has so much history under one roof that picking out all the stories was tough. The Stanley has several tours and most of them tell at least one ghost story if not more. The Timberline Hotel in Mt. Hood, OR was the hotel that was used for the outdoor shots of the exterior of the Overlook Hotel. Unlike the Stanley, the Timberline’s haunted history was scarce. Still a beautiful piece of American history and had a cooler back story than the Stanley. Krysti moves on to the Williamson Memorial Hospital in West Virginia otherwise known as the Old Hospital on College Hill. Shout out to John Cassity, his pictures were what peaked Krys’s interest in this story. This hospital has a long history of odd goings on even before the hospital started getting decommissioned. The community around the hospital declined just like the mining did. Throughout the years, this place has been home to tours, ghost hunters, specials, and events. The stories run the gamut from ghostly nurses, horses in the elevator, strange lights, to battery problems in the xray room.

Krysti starts off with another Central State Hospital but this one is in Kentucky. This is a current psychiatric hospital still in operation in Anchorage Kentucky. This hospital soon became plagued with the unfortunate problems that seem to haunt all old psych hospitals, overcrowding, abuse, and inhumane conditions. Cue some patient deaths, abuse investigations, and some shady “treatment” options and eventually the hospital had to change it’s ways, somewhat... Eventually this hospital had to change and the original buildings were demolished. This land became E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park. Apparently some of the former patients remain on these grounds to this day. From a unburied “sauerkraut” cave to small children spirits saying “mommy” this is still a spooky place to visit. Tori heads north from there to Cleveland Ohio and the Hans Tiedemann House a.k.a Franklin Castle. As one of the “most haunted places in America” this locale manages to end up on most haunted house lists out there. This home to the Tiedemann family saw loads of death within the first five years of it being built. After several deaths Hans sold his Victorian “castle” to the German Socialist Party in 1913. Cue some spy stories, Nazi tunnels, and bootleg booze, this was owned by the German Socialist Party until James Romano bought it in 1968. This family stayed for only 6 years before the “ghosts” drove them off. Add in fires, secret tunnels, human remains, and mysterious fires this place became notorious in the Midwest.

Welcome back to the shit show! Krys covers the story of Muscatatuck Developmental Center. While this is not a fun story, it is a story that needs to be told. This was originally called the Indiana Farm Colony for the Feeble Minded Youth (their words, not ours) and proceeded to practice eugenics on this “class” of people. Way to go Indiana... This was the home for folks with lower IQs and did give them jobs as well. Cue a good staff and better ways to help folks, and part of the population at Muscatatuck was “happy” at their home. The eugenics seemed to be sidelined due to WWII (wonder why) but still went on way too long. Cue some abuse allegations and losing their Medicare funding, Muscatatuck closed. Stories like this are important to tell just for the sheer fact that we need to know how to do better for our fellow people. Tori covers the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery in Seattle Washington. The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal order of Civil War veterans. There were at least five cemeteries of the same name in several different states. These cemeteries were the final resting place for Civil War vets and the one in Seattle seems to be the home to the restless dead or at least echoes of them. Krysti rounds us out with the tale of the Rock in the House. Yups, this charming place sits in the same state as the House on the Rock. Why not capitalize on boulders crashing through your house? We would!

The boys came back to hang out with us for this episode! Chuck and Malcom are back to weigh in on Public Enemy Number One and Little Bastard! Tori covers John Dillinger and his place in history with the FBI. A hometown Indy boy, John Dillinger started early in his troublemaking ways. From his first brush with law for car theft, to his last run across the country, the Jackrabbit was in it all. After bailing out of the Navy, he robbed a grocery store and got caught. Cue his stay in the most dangerous prison in the US, Michigan City Prison. After his stay at this prison he promptly got arrested and then his friends broke out of Michigan City Prison and broke John out jail. Cue cross country crime spree and earned the wrath of good old J. Edgar Hoover himself. Cue firefights, more prison breakouts, and of course the obligatory death controversy. Oh and don’t break out of jail, steal a sheriff’s car, and cross state lines, it won’t end well. Next up was Krysti’s coverage of James Dean and his notorious car, Little Bastard. We learn about James’s short but eventful career as well as his love of fast cars. If Little Bastard wasn’t a cursed car then we don’t know what is. Even Obi Wan knew that care would be the death of James. And a Jedi knows these things. Krys covers the rest of the story of this notorious death vehicle and the list of death and injury it left in it’s wake.

Krysti starts us off with the Culbertson Mansion in New Albany Indiana. This mansion was built by William Culbertson in 1867. By 1870 William was the second most wealthy man in Indiana. He lived in the house with several of his wives and at least three of his children were raised there. The amount of spooky stuff at this locale is substantial, doors opening and closing, lights on and off, menacing feelings, and of course EVPs. Tori brings up the rear with what you may ask? Cemeteries and not just cemeteries but a whole town that was started as a necropolis. Yes folks, a whole city where the dead outnumber the living at 1.5 million to 1800-1600 living souls. Next time you head to San Francisco ask yourself where the cemeteries are. Colma CA would be the answer to that question. With several mass graves due to the relocation from San Francisco, you would think spooky stuff would be the norm of the situation. You want ghosts? Because that’s how you get ghosts...
