Don&#x27;t Mess With Victims of the Plague

Did someone say cemetery? Why yes we did. We went to Scotland for our story this week. It was a big enough story that we decided to split it. We got a listener suggestion, shoutout will be in the episode, but we got to cover Greyfriars! We learn about a very good doggo Greyfriars Bobby. We learn about the monks that began the Kirkyard and the brutal history of the “Killing Time.” The Covenanters Prison is adjacent to the Kirkyard which is the final(or not so final) resting place of George “Bluidy” Mackenzie. The Black Mausoleum holds his remains and until an unfortunate man looking for shelter in the rain made the poor choice of breaking into it. Also our favorite hashtag comes into play. #kidsaredicks

We start our episode today back in our hometown. Today Tori covers the Athenaeum and it’s long history in Indianapolis. Built in 1893 as Das Deutsche Haus this has been a landmark in Lockerbie Square since it’s construction. The Athenaeum has been a hub of German heritage in Indianapolis. It lays claim to the most haunted space in Indiana, not just Indianapolis. They have ghost tours and historic tours as well. The Rathskellar which is located in the basement is the longest operating restaurant in Indy. It was featured on Ghost Hunters in the episode Dancing With the Dead as well. Krysti ventures to Australia to cover the mystery of Harold Holt’s disappearance. We learn of both his military service and his political service. His impressive political career was progressive in most ways and was a champion for the indigenous people’s rights. He also had some different thoughts on security details which may have played a part in his disappearance. #notsayingitwasaliens

Ew, Belle!

Today Tori gets to dive into a genre that we don’t usually cover, true crime. But this one hometown legend/villain which falls into our topic range, the infamous Belle Gunness. A Norwegian transplant to Chicago and then to Indiana, this woman left a trail of death and insurance fraud in her wake. The carnage and farm where she met her “end” is located in La Porte Indiana. We also find that Belle was not the first to commit murder on the property. Krysti covers the defunct amusement park Rose Island and Charlestown State Park. Rose Island had all the amenities for it’s time (1923-1937) and was located on a peninsula named Devil’s Backbone. It began life as Fern Grove in the 1880s. One of the steamboats that would bring revelers to the island was the Idlewild which was renamed the Belle of Louisville which is still on the river to this day. The park didn’t survive the flood of the Ohio River in 1937. Krysti also reprises more legends of Cry Baby Bridge.
