In today's episode I had the pleasure of speaking with Jennifer Tarm. Jennifer (she/they) is an Asian American therapist-in-training and community organizer. She is registered as associate marriage and family therapist and is currently pursuing her doctorate in counseling psychology. With her passion in advancing and addressing BIPOC mental health from a system's perspective, she is a team member at Asian Mental Health Project (AMHP), a nonprofit dedicated to educating and empowering the pan-Asian community to seek mental health services. During the time of the recording she served as the Director of Operations & Special Projects. She currently serves as the Director of Partnerships for AMHP. In todays episode, Jennifer explains what the mission and purpose of Asian Mental Health Project is, how it came to be, and why it's such an important resource for the AAPI community. She also goes into detail regarding her own personal mental health journey. Jennifer gets candid about the barriers she has had to overcome as an Asian American, how she felt it was her duty to live up to her families expectations of her regardless of how it made her feel, and how generational trauma, lack of mental health resources and a lack of community almost made her flunk out of college. Lastly, she explains how seeking therapy helped her gain clarity regarding her identity and her life.
