play

10/22/21 • 53 min

We are back with the twisted Genius's of "Red Duke Games" to talk about their new book "Lovecraft cocktails"

The authors (Mike Slater, Thomas Roache) and the illustrator (Kurt Komoda) behind the best-selling Necronomnomnom have summoned another glorious grimoire―this time featuring cursed cocktails. These boozy and punny recipes pay homage to Lovecraftian horror themes and monsters with titles such as the King in Jell-O, Pink FlaMi-Go, and Sunken Island Iced Tea. Further libations include the Hell Residente, Moscow Ghoul, the Root Beer of All Evil, and the Bloodbath & Beyond. The book provides “Virgin Sacrifices” for the coachman designated to drive everyone back from the séance, or for anyone not wanting to imbibe the devil’s water.

There are 75 delicious and malicious recipes, each gorgeously illustrated, mercilessly tested, and hilariously written. Recipes appear in the form of cryptic rhymes and arcane rituals but are always easy (and fun) to follow. Bibulous and ridiculous, Lovecraft Cocktails will bring delight and fright for Halloween, the holidays, and beyond.

BAKING WITH DORIE: Sweet, Salty & Simple by Dorie Greenspan (on-sale October 19, 2021, Houghton Mifflin, $35/hardcover)

Dorie Greenspan's name is synonymous with baking. The renowned author of thirteen cookbooks and winner of five James Beard and two IACP awards offers up a collection that celebrates the sweet, the savory, and the simple. Every recipe is signature Dorie: Easy and accessible, with ingredients available at the corner grocery store. Beginners can ace every technique in this book. Are there surprises? But of course! Berry biscuits. Foot-long cheese sticks made with cream puff dough, gouda, and cumin. An apple pie with browned butter that tastes like warm mulled cider. A fast s'mores ice cream cake with velvety chocolate sauce, salty peanuts, and toasted marshmallows. This collection of simple yet sophisticated baking includes chapters like Breakfast Stuff * Cakes * Cookies * Pies and Tarts * Salty Bakes. Each one features "Sweethearts," Dorie's all-time favorite recipes that lend themselves to being remade, refashioned, and riffed on, like the chocolate chip cookies, meringue, and brioche.

This year marks New York Times bestselling author Dorie Greenspan’s thirtieth anniversary as a cookbook author. She has won five James Beard Awards for her cookbooks and journalism and was inducted into the Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America. A columnist for the New York Times Magazine, Dorie was recently awarded an Order of Agricultural Merit from the French government for her outstanding writing on the foods of that country. She lives in New York City, Westbrook, Connecticut, and Paris.

Helen Rennie – Founder and Instructor of Helen's Kitchen Cooking School.

While most people sneak into the kitchen to get a snack, Helen spent her life sneaking into the kitchen to cook. At 10, she thought making bean soup was more exciting than practicing the piano. At 18, she was feeding her fellow college students in exchange for help with her programming assignments. After finishing her degree in Computer Science, she went to Provence, France to study art history and ended up studying the art of cooking and eating. Traveling through the Mediterranean made her fall in love with the sun drenched cuisine of the coast.

Upon return to the States, she spent most of her free time exploring the fish and farmer's markets of Boston and cooking every kind of fish and vegetable she could get her hands on. Bored with her job at a dysfunctional dot-com, and not having enough money for culinary school, Helen got an internship in Casablanca Restaurant, and spent her nights and weekends learning the ropes of professional cooking. What started out as a hobby turned into a teaching position at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education.

In 2005, Helen decided to open her own kitchen to anyone who wants to learn about food. That's how Helen's Kitchen was born. Since then, Helen has taught 1,000+ students helping many home cooks put delicious, nutritionally-dense meals on their tables. Helen's cooking philosophy centers on finding creative ways to prepare local ingredients. She teaches cooking classes in her house in Natick with a strong focus on culinary techniques and food science. Her classes are small to give all students a chance for hands-on practice.

Helen is a lifelong student, spending a lot of her free time interning in the best Boston restaurants and traveling around the world to study different cuisines. Her culinary adventures include France, Italy, Spain, Peru, and Japan.

The Well-Seasoned Librarian: Mixing Cookbooks and Conversation - Rose Levy Beranbaum (The Cookie Bible/The Cake Bible) The Well Seasoned Librarian Season 3 Episode 5
play

10/11/21 • 108 min

Rose Levy Beranbaum is an American baker, cookbook author and blogger. She pioneered the reverse creaming technique of cake-making. In this process, the fat and flour are mixed first before adding the remaining ingredients. By coating the flour in fat, gluten development is inhibited, helping to prevent toughness

Rose has been called the “Diva of Desserts” and “the most meticulous cook who ever lived.” And add this recent accolade—-“If ever there was a cookbook author who could place her hands on top of yours, putting you through the proper motions, helping you arrive at just the right touch, Beranbaum is the one.”
Rose’s first book, The Cake Bible, was the 1988 winner of the IACP/Seagram Book of the Year and the NASFT Showcase Award for the cookbook that has contributed most to educating the consumer about specialty foods. A culinary best-seller, The Cake Bible is currently in its 38th printing.
Rose’s Christmas Cookies, was the 1990 winner of the James Beard Best Book in the Dessert and Baking Category. The Pie and Pastry Bible, published in 1998, received many kudos including: Food & Wine Books “Best of the Best: The Best Recipes from the Best Cookbooks of the Year” and Coffee & Cuisine “Best Cookbook” award.
Rose's newest and most comprehensive book, The Bread Bible, was the 2003 winner of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in the Best Bread Book Category. It was listed by Publisher's Weekly and Food & Wine as one of the top ten books of 2003, and by Fine Cooking as one of the top 12. From quick breads, such as muffins, biscuits, and scones, to yeast breads, such as seeded wheat breads, Jewish rye, baguette, and brioche, this is a collection of her favorites, with innovative techniques that will guarantee making a successful bread baker of anyone who so desires.

Steadfast in the world of food writing, Rose is a Contributing Editor to Food Arts Magazine where “Rose’s Sugar Bible” (April 2000) received two prestigious awards: The Association of Food Journalists Award for the Best Food Feature in a Magazine and The Jacob’s Creek World Food Award for Best Food Article. She is also a contributor to The Washington Post, Fine Cooking, Bride's, Reader's Digest, and Hemispheres.

Rose is a popular guest on major television shows (The Today Show, The Early Show, Martha Stewart, Charlie Rose, The Food Network, and PBS: Master Classes of Johnson & Wales, and Seasonings with Dede Wilson). Rose is currently working on her second season of “Baking Magic with Rose Levy Beranbaum” on PBS stations across the country.
