Episode 62--Using BOTH Meditation AND Medication to Support Your Mental Health with Bryan Piatt
The Mindful Midlife Crisis
06/08/22 • 55 min
Text your questions, comments, & topic suggestions here! You can also email [email protected].
This week, we talk to Bryan Piatt. Bryan is the host of the Take What Serves. Leave the Rest podcast. Bryan is also a former TV news anchor in the Twin Cities who now serves as a mental health advocate as both a breathwork Facilitator and meditation guide. Bryan is currently enrolled in grad school to become a therapist so that he can continue supporting the wellness of others. Bryan is here today to share his mental health journey as well as speak to his experiences with both medication and meditation.
We ask Bryan:
--Your podcast is called “Take What Serves. Leave the Rest.” That’s such a great title, so I’d like you to share the idea behind that title.
--On your podcast, you openly talk about your mental health concerns, so we’d love for you to share your story with our listeners as well.
--How has your mental health journey influenced your decision to become a therapist?
--What are you learning about yourself during this time, what are you noticing about the clients you’re seeing at this time, and how do you navigate the potential desire to project your own experiences onto your clients?
--You talked about the role medication has played in your mental health journey. Can you elaborate on that for us?
--One thing you talked about on your podcast is the stigma around medication, and if Brian and I are being honest, we have spoken out against the use of medication. I think for the two of us, it’s more of a personal experience kind of thing (and for me I believe that medication is too often over-prescribed or used before truly assessing the whole picture of the patient), but one thing you said in the podcast that I really liked is that it doesn’t have to be an “either/or” scenario, and you’re an example of that because you both use medication but you also practice meditation and yoga. In what ways do these all complement each other to serve your wellness?

Episode 70--“Joy Is Doubled When Shared; Sorrow Is Halved When Shared”: Mourning the Lives Lost in Itaewan
The Mindful Midlife Crisis
11/02/22 • 3 min
Text your questions, comments, & topic suggestions here! You can also email [email protected].
Hey everyone. I’m changing up some things on the podcast this week, so I just wanted to pop on and let you know that I didn’t feel comfortable releasing this week’s originally scheduled episode because the focus was on how to fully embrace and live more presently with the somatic experience of joy. Much of what I was planning to discuss in that episode revolves around how the city of Seoul and the people I’ve met here elicit this newfound joy that I have been experiencing lately, but given the tragedy that took place in Itaewon last weekend, and the fact that the friends and families of those whose lives were lost as well as the entire country are in a national period of mourning, which for those families will last a lifetime, and considering many of my friends here from the SeoulShare, Soul Walkers, and CIK meetup groups, and me for that matter, were in Itaewon that night and some of us were only a block away from where this tragedy took place without even realizing that anything was wrong, I don’t think this is the right time to share that episode.
I’m sure I’ll share it at some point down the road, but now is not that time. Now is a time for healing; my friend and organizer of SeoulShare and past guest Iggy Lee have been organizing events for people in the groups to come together who may be feeling isolated or alone in these trying times, and he shared a saying that goes, “Joy is doubled when shared; sorrow is halved when shared.” Originally this episode was supposed to be about how we can experience more joy in our lives by sharing more meaningful moments with our friends, but right now, we’re going to take some time to heal in the company of our friends.
I just want to take a minute to express my deepest sympathies to the families and friends who lost loved ones last weekend in Itaewon. There’s nothing more I can say that will lessen your pain, but I hope you are surrounded by people you love and who will support you through this unimaginably difficult time.
So, that’s it for this week. Thank you for tuning in. Please take the next week to tell the people who add value to your life how much you love and appreciate them.
