The best podcasts for a midlife crisis

Who am I?

Billy Lahr is the host of The Mindful Midlife Crisis, a podcast for people navigating the complexities and possibilities of life’s second half. Billy spent 21 years as an educator but became disenfranchised the last half due to budding mental health concerns and a lack of job satisfaction. In 2021, Billy left his job as dean of students in order to travel the world in search of more meaningful life experiences. Since then, he’s been focused on teaching others how to navigate their own midlife crisis with more curiosity, openness, compassion, and awareness through the use of mindfulness meditation as well as practical and intentional daily routines that focus on consistency and discipline through his introductory Reflect–Learn–Grow mindfulness program. In 2021, I was one of 47 million Americans who quit their jobs due to my own burnout and priority re-evaluation. Following the challenges our nation’s educators faced during the pandemic, I no longer had the passion needed to work with high school students. For the next year and a half, I traveled all over the world in search of meaningful experiences to reignite my passion for helping others. Throughout my journey, I met many incredible people along the way, and during our conversations, I would share with them how my mindfulness practice helped me navigate the challenges I often faced during my time as an educator and as a midlife pivoter. What I learned from these conversations is that people all over the world were forced to confront their own mortality due to the pandemic, and they too were re-evaluating their priorities but needed guidance to do so with more intention and inspiration. After learning more about the existential crises other people from all over the world were feeling, I decided to become a certified mindfulness teacher. Through my Reflect–Learn–Grow Introduction to Mindfulness program, I am now leading virtual and in-person mindfulness sessions to help people live with more curiosity, openness, compassion, and awareness while also sharing practical and intentional daily routines that focus on consistency and discipline.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

The purpose of The Mindful Midlife Crisis is to help others navigate the complexities and possibilities of life’s second half. One way I do that is by providing a platform that gives people the space and permission to share their expertise and life experiences so you can use that information to enhance your life with whatever you find relatable and practical. I also share how cultivating my own daily mindfulness practice over the last ten years has helped me navigate the trials, tribulations, and successes of my own midlife crisis, and I’m teaching you how to navigate life more mindfully through my virtual mindfulness sessions. My mindfulness practice has helped me process my ruminating thoughts, anxiety, and stress in a much healthier and productive way by reducing my emotional reactivity and impulsive behavior, which in turn has helped me improve my relationships and communication with others

What is my podcast playlist about?

My playlist focuses on self-improvement, mental health awareness, and mindfulness. This is especially crucial for middle-aged men because according to the CDC: "Adults aged 35–64 years account for 46.8% of all suicides in the United States, and suicide is the 8th leading cause of death for this age group." "Among men in this age group, suicide rates were highest for non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native (AI/AN) men (41.3 suicides per 100,000), followed by non-Hispanic White men (35.7 per 100,000)." These are three times higher than the suicide rates for women in the same demographic. Meanwhile, "Adults aged 75 and older have one of the highest suicide rates (20.3 per 100,000). Men aged 75 and older have the highest rate (42.2 per 100,000) compared to other age groups. Non-Hispanic White men have the highest suicide rate compared to other racial/ethnic men in this age group (50.1 per 100,000)." I firmly believe that we need to be having more conversations around this, but we also need to help men to understand that they have the power to reflect, learn, and grow when it comes to self-improvement, mental health, and mindful living. Not all men have the financial resources to access mental health services, but these podcasts offer free advice on how to reflect, learn, and grow (without all the woo woo nonsense).

The podcasts I picked and why

1. The Jordan Harbinger Show

Why this podcast?

Jordan Harbinger is far and away the best of the best when it comes to long-form interviews. He drops two-three episodes a week and I consume them on a regular basis. I enjoy the Friday Feedback episodes because as someone going into mindfulness coaching, he does a great job of framing the question in a way that provides every angle for the person writing in to explore. The long-form interviews he has are with fascinating people who challenge us to explore curiosity, openness, compassion, and awareness without all the woo woo nonsense that's often associated with that. This is the gold standard for podcasts. Can't recommend this show enough!

2. Ten Percent Happier with Dan Harris

Why this podcast?

I enjoyed the book 10% Happier because Dan and I have a lot in common when it comes to navigating anxiety, especially in the second half of life. Dan's skepticism around some of the woo woo language around mindfulness and self-improvement is exactly why his show resonates with me. The guests he has on his show are well-researched and experts in their field, but the conversations are candid and enjoyable.

Dan Harris is a fidgety, skeptical journalist who had a panic attack on live national television, which led him to try something he otherwise never would have considered: meditation. He went on to write the bestselling book, 10% Happier. On this show, Dan talks with eminent meditation teachers, top scientists, and even the odd celebrity. Guests include everyone from His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Brené Brown to Karamo from Queer Eye. On some episodes, Dan ventures into the deep end of the pool, covering subjects such as enlightenment and psychedelics. On other episodes, it’s science-based techniques for issues such as anxiety, productivity, and relationships. Dan's approach is seemingly modest, but secretly radical: happiness is a skill you can train, just like working your bicep in the gym. Your progress may be incremental at first, but like any good investment, it compounds over time.

New episodes come out every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for free. Listen 1-week early and to all episodes ad-free with Wondery+ or Amazon Music with a Prime membership or Amazon Music Unlimited subscription.

3. Middle of Somewhere w/Chad Daniels and Cy Amundson

Why this podcast?

I listen to this show every Monday because it's a hilarious bromance of sorts between two middle-aged comedians who are self-aware of their own insecurities but lean into them and each other. Not to mention hearing Chad's thoughts on being an empty nester now are just too funny (and I don't even have kids!).

I had Greg on my show a while back (Episode 41), and since then, this guy has been crushing midlife. The podcast designed to help men maximize middle age to achieve a better quality of life, and the quality of guests he has each week proves just how important leveraging your connections and relationships is. 5. Trash the Checklist

Why this podcast?

I had Dr. Yolanda Holloway and Tiffany Byrd on my show a while back (Episode 42), and the two of them were just so dynamic that they instantly became fan faves. Our episode together garnered the most positive feedback of any episode because they spoke passionately and being your own author in life and not letting others dictate what your "life checklist" should be. This comes out in their show as well, and I love how their friendship shines through in their conversations while at the same time they deliver powerful messages about living life authentically.

Adulting and the expectations associated with it can be daunting. Trash the Checklist is a no-pressure-added discussion facilitated by best friends, family women, and 20+ year career professionals, Tiffany Byrd and Yolanda Holloway. The hosts have spent their lives blindly adhering to set expectations, so they bring a realistic perspective to discussions that will help listeners become more comfortable with exploring alternatives to always doing what’s expected. Trash the Checklist is for women who want to define their own intimate relationships and families, careers, educational paths, finances, and even what to do on their "off" time-- to begin to make their own rules, and to set their own terms for success and happiness in everyday life.
