Episode 157 - Educate, Elevate, Empower (ft. Dr. Tiffany Woodus)
12/21/20 • 46 min
Dr. Tiffany Woodus has over 10 years of experience in healthcare. She completed a Doctor of Medicine degree from The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 2006. Subsequently, she completed an internship and residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW)/Parkland Health & Hospital System in 2010. During her tenure here, Dr. Woodus was awarded with such accolades as distinguished teaching awards. She is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology. After completing training, Dr. Woodus continued at UTSW as an Assistant Professor in Obstetrics & Gynecology where she participated on various residency & policy development committees.
Dr. Woodus is on the podcast today to discuss Woodus Obsterics & Gynecology which is committed to improving black maternal health outcomes:
"The maternal health and well-being of all mothers, particularly black and brown mothers, is under attack. The CDC defines health disparities as the preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence or opportunities to achieve optimal health that are experienced by socially disadvantaged populations.
At Woodus Obstetrics & Gynecology, we recognize other POC experience disparities in maternal health outcomes, however black maternal health has been marginalized far too long. We refuse to be complicit by remaining silent.
It’s not, 'Only “Black Mamas Matter.'
It’s not, 'Black Mamas Matter More/Most.'
It’s, 'Black Mamas Matter, Too.'
Dr. Woodus and I discussed the importance of having a space where one can truly relax and focus on the business of giving birth. Dr. Woodus and I discussed how she wanted to create a space where Black women felt safe, secure, and understood. That her practice seeks to educate, elevate, and empower mothers is something to be celebrated. We can only hope her practice is the first of many more like it.

Episode 156 - Unpresidented (ft. Martha Brockenbrough)
Martha Brockenbrough (rhymes with broken toe) is the author of two books for adults and numerous books for young readers (with several others on the way), including YA fiction and nonfiction, picture books, and a forthcoming chapter book series.
Martha is on the show today to discuss her book "Unpresidented: A Biography Of Donald Trump"
From no-holds-barred reality TV star to unlikely candidate, Donald J. Trump rose to the highest political office: President of the United States of America.
Learn fascinating details about his personal history, including:
-Why Trump’s grandfather left Germany and immigrated to America -Why Woodie Guthrie wrote a song criticizing Trump’s father -How Trump’s romance with Ivana began―and ended -When Trump first declared his interest in running for President
Richly informed by original research and illustrated throughout with photographs and documents, Unpresidented is a gripping and important read.
Martha and I discussed her research into Donald Trump's life for this book, and why she felt compelled to document his history for future generations. Coincidentally we recorded this episode on the eve of the 2020 Presidential Election. Knowing how the election ended up gives this episode a bit more hindsight perspective than we even knew when recording. I hope you'll enjoy this important discussion.
