Do you smell that delicious smell?

It's a delicious batch of cookies that The Reverend Shawn Amos is cooking up in his new book 'Cookies & Milk'!

Amos is on the show this week to discuss his book, a fictionalized re-telling of his childhood growing up as the son of Wally 'Famous' Amos and opening up the infamous cookie shop back in the 70's.

We get into a discussion about the book, all of his latest music releases, and how folks can start to 'reclaim their legacy'.

Enjoy!

About The Reverend Shaw Amos

Most people know me as blues musician, The Reverend Shawn Amos. I’ve been lucky to meet and work with a lot of very talented people who all taught me how to live a creative life.

I’m the only child of William Morris agent-turned-cookie entrepreneur Wally “Famous” Amos, and singer Shirley “Shirl-ee May” Ellis. I spent my childhood in shadowy nightclubs, on the funky streets of 70s Hollywood, and in my own broken home, watching folks hustle, intently listening to them spin tales. I went to NYU Film School, only to be wooed back west in my senior year to accept a screenwriting gig with A & M Films.

Throughout my twenties, I made music that grappled with my race and identity. I tried on personas, searched for my voice, explored different kinds of music which led me to the blues.

While I was grounded from touring during the Coronavirus Pandemic, I had a lot of time to think—and write. This was the beginning of Cookies & Milk. It’s a book for my son (also named Ellis), my dad, and me. It’s also a book for anyone wanting to discover who they are.

About Cookies & Milk

Eleven-year-old Ellis Johnson has the summertime blues. He dreamed of spending the summer of 1976 hanging out with friends, listening to music, and playing his harmonica. Instead, he'll be sleeping on a lumpy pullout in Dad's sad little post-divorce bungalow and helping bring Dad's latest far-fetched, sure-to-fail idea to life: opening the world's first chocolate chip cookie store. They have six weeks to perfect their recipe, get a ramshackle A-frame on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard into tip-top shape, and bring in customers. But of course, nothing is as easy as Dad makes it sound, even with Grandma along for the ride. Like she says, they have to GIT—get it together—and make things work. Along the way, Ellis discovers a family mystery he is determined to solve, the power of community, and new faith in himself. Partially based on Shawn Amos's own experiences growing up the son of Wally “Famous” Amos in a mostly white area, and packed with humor, heart, and fun illustrations, this debut novel sings with the joy of self-discovery, unconditional love, and belonging.

The DTALKS Podcast - Episode 174 - Phoebe and Her Unicorn (ft. Dana Simpson)
play

04/19/21 • 45 min

In this episode of the podcast Joe talks to author/illustrator/cartoonist Dana Simpson about her entire body of work AND life in ~45 minutes!

Seriously though, Dana Simpson is an incredible person who created the type of cartoon she wanted to read and it has spawned into an amazing project known as "Phoebe and Her Unicorn". Dana and Joe dig into her early work with "Ozy and Millie" and how one contest produced her most famous work. They also dig into how artists tend to use their work to process what they're currently going through. It's a fascinating discussion we hope you enjoy!

Dana Claire Simpson, a native of Gig Harbor, Washington, first caught the eyes of devoted comics readers with the internet strip Ozy and Millie. After winning the 2009 Comic Strip Superstar contest, she developed the strip Phoebe and Her Unicorn (originally known as Heavenly Nostrils), which is now syndicated in newspapers worldwide.

Simpson’s books have appeared on the New York Times bestseller list, and won the Washington State Book Award and the Pacific Northwest Book Award. She lives with her spouse and her cat in Santa Barbara, California.

The DTALKS Podcast - Episode 159 - Draw Every Day (ft. Jarrett Krosoczka)
play

01/04/21 • 38 min

Jarrett J. Krosoczka is the New York Times-bestselling author/illustrator behind more than forty books for young readers, including his wildly popular Lunch Lady graphic novels, select volumes of the Star WarsTM: Jedi Academy series, and Hey, Kiddo, which was a National Book Award Finalist. Krosoczka creates books with humor, heart, and deep respect for his young readers—qualities that have made his titles perennial favorites on the bookshelves of homes, libraries, and bookstores. In addition to his work in print, Krosoczka produced, directed, and performed in the audiobook adaptation of his graphic memoir, which garnered both Audie and Odyssey Awards for excellence in audiobook production. Krosoczka has been a guest on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross and has delivered two TED Talks, which have collectively accrued more than two million views online. Young creatives can also hear Krosoczka weekly on SiriusXM's Kids Place Live and catch his wildly popular web show on YouTube, Draw Every Day with JJK. He also acted as a consultant and appeared in live segments of Creative Galaxy on Prime Video.

Jarrett and I discussed his first forays into art, the overwhelmingly personal memoir "Hey, Kiddo", and his current YouTube series "Draw Every Day" among other topics. Jarrett realizes his work, and his words, can inspire people of all ages and seeks to use his incredible talent to make the world a better place. His focus on empowering children fits right into the core focus of The DTALKS Podcast: to make the world a more inclusive place for all! Thanks for coming on the show Jarrett, we can't wait to have you on again!

Dr. Tiffany Woodus has over 10 years of experience in healthcare. She completed a Doctor of Medicine degree from The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 2006. Subsequently, she completed an internship and residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW)/Parkland Health & Hospital System in 2010. During her tenure here, Dr. Woodus was awarded with such accolades as distinguished teaching awards. She is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology. After completing training, Dr. Woodus continued at UTSW as an Assistant Professor in Obstetrics & Gynecology where she participated on various residency & policy development committees.

Dr. Woodus is on the podcast today to discuss Woodus Obsterics & Gynecology which is committed to improving black maternal health outcomes:

"The maternal health and well-being of all mothers, particularly black and brown mothers, is under attack. The CDC defines health disparities as the preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence or opportunities to achieve optimal health that are experienced by socially disadvantaged populations.

At Woodus Obstetrics & Gynecology, we recognize other POC experience disparities in maternal health outcomes, however black maternal health has been marginalized far too long. We refuse to be complicit by remaining silent.

It’s not, 'Only “Black Mamas Matter.'

It’s not, 'Black Mamas Matter More/Most.'

It’s, 'Black Mamas Matter, Too.'

Dr. Woodus and I discussed the importance of having a space where one can truly relax and focus on the business of giving birth. Dr. Woodus and I discussed how she wanted to create a space where Black women felt safe, secure, and understood. That her practice seeks to educate, elevate, and empower mothers is something to be celebrated. We can only hope her practice is the first of many more like it.

The DTALKS Podcast - Episode 156 - Unpresidented (ft. Martha Brockenbrough)
play

12/14/20 • 53 min

Martha Brockenbrough (rhymes with broken toe) is the author of two books for adults and numerous books for young readers (with several others on the way), including YA fiction and nonfiction, picture books, and a forthcoming chapter book series.

Martha is on the show today to discuss her book "Unpresidented: A Biography Of Donald Trump"

From no-holds-barred reality TV star to unlikely candidate, Donald J. Trump rose to the highest political office: President of the United States of America.

Learn fascinating details about his personal history, including:

-Why Trump’s grandfather left Germany and immigrated to America -Why Woodie Guthrie wrote a song criticizing Trump’s father -How Trump’s romance with Ivana began―and ended -When Trump first declared his interest in running for President

Richly informed by original research and illustrated throughout with photographs and documents, Unpresidented is a gripping and important read.

Martha and I discussed her research into Donald Trump's life for this book, and why she felt compelled to document his history for future generations. Coincidentally we recorded this episode on the eve of the 2020 Presidential Election. Knowing how the election ended up gives this episode a bit more hindsight perspective than we even knew when recording. I hope you'll enjoy this important discussion.

play

10/12/20 • 53 min

In this episode of the podcast Joe is finally able to talk to another one of his icons, Rob Bell!

Rob stopped by the show today to discuss his latest book "Everything is Spiritual: Who We Are and What We're Doing Here". Joe and Rob discuss our current political climate, our divisive society, and speculate how we could possibly be on the next iteration of humankind.

If you want to purchase Rob's latest book CLICK HERE

In his profound and deeply personal new book, EVERYTHING IS SPIRITUAL: Who We Are and What We're Doing Here, New York Times bestselling author Rob Bell explores the endless dynamic questions and connections that have shaped his life, providing powerful insight into understanding one's purpose and place in the world.

EVERYTHING IS SPIRITUAL is a brief history of how ideas about creation, love, and connection shaped the author—and can shape every one of us. In EVERYTHING IS SPIRITUAL, Bell explores the wonder and awe that comes from embracing where and who you come from, discovering in the wounds and regrets of life an invitation lurking in there to expand, much like the universe has been doing for 13 billion years.

EVERYTHING IS SPIRITUAL shows there is a space beyond all the parts and divisions and differences and polarization where you can see that it’s all one connected whole—and that it’s all rigged in favor of growth, expansion, and joy.

ROB BELL is the New York Times Bestselling author of ten books, including Velvet Elvis, Drops Like Stars, and Love Wins, which have been translated into 25 languages. His podcast, called RobCast, was named by iTunes Best of 2015. He does regular shows at Largo, a comedy and music club in Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife Kristen and their three kids.

In this episode of the podcast Joe talks to ANOTHER Joe Shaw, this one based out of the United Kingdom.

These not-so-average Joes discuss leaving a legacy for our children, what kind of art we're creating, and how we can build a more inclusive world amidst the current political climate.

Joseph Shaw is an artist based in Newcastle upon Tyne. His immersive installations tackle the forced obsolescence of technology post-2000, bring to light issues of trustworthiness and distrust of objects and individuals, and question notions of causation and effect (or actions and their reactions) with a permeating dark humour. Shaw’s work has been shown in exhibitions both in the UK and internationally and he is one of the founding members of the Roundabout collective based in Munich, Germany. Shaw graduated from Newcastle University in 2015 and has since become a member of NewBridge Studios.
