"Be curious, maintain an open mind, and maintain your high standards." - Lee Bainbrigge
Our water treatment community is a close-knit brotherhood and sisterhood, regardless of where we live. We face similar challenges and share a common goal: to grow and learn from each other. Our latest podcast episode features a conversation that delves into the differences and similarities in Legionella control practices and regulations between the United States and the United Kingdom. This insightful episode features Lee Bainbrigge, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of SMS Environmental Ltd as our charming lab partner.
Key Insights from Lee Bainbrigge on Legionella Control:
Differences in Legionella Management and Documentation In both countries, the primary Legionella control methods are keeping water moving and using temperature control. However, the UK places a stronger emphasis on documentation and compliance systems to record control measures. "The types of control you are using, you need to record it, you need to write it down in a compliance system," Lee explained. If a system tests positive for Legionella, it is crucial to effectively and clearly communicate to the client, "There's Legionella in the system. Let's look at doing something about it." In the UK, these communications are meticulously documented and kept as digital records for future reference.
Crafting Effective Legionella Legislation When discussing what lawmakers should consider when writing Legionella legislation, Lee advised caution and balance. He noted that the guidance in the USA is relatively proportionate and effective when in the right hands. "Effectively, the guidance you've got in the USA is relatively proportionate... In the right hands, you're going to do a good job with the guidance that you've got," he noted. In contrast, the UK's approach can sometimes be overly prescriptive. Lee suggests a middle ground, advocating for guidance that is neither too relaxed nor too stringent, ensuring efforts and resources truly reduce risk. "I think the most reasonable guidance you could come up with is somewhere in between the two. There are pros and cons on both sides," Lee mentioned.
ASHRAE 188 and Its Direction in the USA Lee affirmed that the USA is on the right track with ASHRAE 188 for Legionella control. "Yes, absolutely!" he responded when asked if the US is heading in the right direction. He highlighted the importance of competent professionals conducting Legionella risk assessments to ensure effective control measures. "Make sure that the people that are carrying out your Legionella risk assessment are competent and you're actually getting good advice at the beginning of your control scheme," he advised.
Challenges and Technology Opportunities in the UK In the UK, current challenges include maintaining competency and training within the industry, adapting to novel systems like heat pumps, and dealing with reduced water flow in buildings. Lee mentioned the potential of new technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and remote monitoring, which could revolutionize Legionella control, although current guidance has yet to fully incorporate these advancements. "We have got challenges with... new novel systems coming into our domestic hot and cold water systems. The use of heat pumps and different ways of sourcing energy and reducing water flow are all having an impact on Legionella control," Lee explained.
Building a Global Culture of Learning Lee is a strong advocate for collaboration within the industry. He believes in learning from each other and sharing best practices, which can greatly benefit organizations and improve public health protection. "I’m a big believer of us being collaborative in this industry," Lee shared. "When we see what somebody else is doing and establish what’s working for organizations, that is just so great to see."
Professional Standards and Certifications Lee discussed the significance of the Certified Water Technologist (CWT) certification. SMS Environmental Ltd. values high standards and depth of knowledge within its team, which is why they are strong proponents of the CWT certification. "We don't have in the UK an equivalent qualification specific to water treatment," Lee explained. "We've certainly looked at the CWT and gone, 'this does really what people that have been involved in the organization in the industry far longer than me tell me was very much the way the sector was born.'"
Advice for Water Professionals Lee's best advice to wat...

Today, a very special colleague of mine came to the show: Charlie Heineman, CWT. Charlie and I first met when we took the Certified Water Technologist (CWT) Exam in Atlanta back in 2002. To date, Charlie is still an active member of AWT in the CWT and Business Resources committees.
With more than 40 years of experience in the water treatment industry, Charlie started his water treatment career with Nalco Chemical Company (Basic Industry Group) as a Field Representative in Wichita, Kansas. After six years, Charlie was selected to start up Nalco’s Utility Group in Dallas, Texas. Nalco’s Utility Group (Dallas) grew from $100K sales to $4MM sales over the next seven years.
In 2001, Charlie founded Precision Water Technologies in Dallas, Texas, and joined AWT in 2002. Charlie became a Certified Water Technologist in 2002. Aside from AWT, he is also a member of BOMA, IREM, and TAFE Associations.
A United States Marine Corps veteran and the recipient of the Navy Cross of Gallantry Medal for combat operations in Vietnam, Charlie went back to college after two years of serving. He graduated from Missouri State University with a degree in Education (Biology/Chemistry), and today he is on the show to share lessons he has gleaned over the years in the best industry in the world, industrial water treatment.
Bottom line: Charlie Heineman is going to share his career journey starting out, not knowing what a boiler was, to becoming a water treatment business owner.

Thinking On Water With James [39:09]
Thinking On Water With James:
In this week’s episode, we’re thinking about how long after an oxidizer feeds to a cooling tower, should you wait to test the residual? Should you test immediately? Wait 30 minutes, an hour, or several hours? How long does it take the oxidizing biocide to be effective? What’s happening to the oxidizing biocide over time within the system? Is it fed at a time of day that makes it easy to test at the appropriate time afterwards? Should you manually initiate a feed so you can test afterwards or not? What do you write in your field service report if you miss the optimal testing window? Take this week to think about the optimal time for testing oxidizing biocides after they are fed.

Hey Scaling Up Nation! It’s your weekly host, Trace Blackmore. In today’s episode, I answer your questions about communication, healthy habits, being a good listener, and share a story that I hope causes you to reflect on why we work and who we work for
I love that so many of our listeners submit show ideas for us, and after looking through dozens of show idea suggestions, I noticed one overarching theme emerge: communication. Good communication can help every relationship you are in from your family members to your clients. Good communication is never “accomplished” like clicking a check box, it is maintained and never ends.
One of the things I’m going to dive into today is a book that changed not only my communication style but also how I systematize my life for the better, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. As a reference, here are those 7 habits:
-
- Be proactive
- Begin with the end in mind
- Put first things first
- Think Win/Win
- Seek first to understand, then to be understood
- Synergize
- Sharpen the saw
After listening to today’s episode, I challenge you to get excited when you meet someone who doesn’t agree with you because you will leave the conversation better for it.

176 The One About Tagged Polymer Technologies
Scaling UP! H2O
01/08/21 • 57 min
As water treatment professionals, we must continue to expand on our knowledge of the industry. Learning from others in the industry is a great way to do that! One key aspect of the water treatment industry is understanding polymers. Many of us regularly use these products but have no idea how they are created and where they come from
On the podcast today, we are joined again by Mike Standish, co-founder of Radical Polymers. Mike has over 28 years of experience in polymer additive design and development. Before forming Radical Polymers, Mike served in technical and business leadership roles within global, publicly-traded chemical companies. He is responsible for developing and patenting industry-leading polymers for use in the water treatment, oilfield, and detergent industries.
Mike will be talking all about tagged polymers and what’s new in this space over the last few years in today’s episode. After Mike’s presentation at the most recent AWT conference, I knew we needed to talk further and get this information to the entire industry. As James McDonald has said about Mike from him joining me on episode 14, “Mike is one of those presenters that you’d listen to even if he was reading from a phone book. He’s well-spoken and always highly informative in very relatable terms. Good guest!” I hope you learn something today and enjoy hearing from my friend Mike Standish!

096 The One That Helps Introverts
Episode 96: Show Notes
Well, Kermit the Frog said It’s not easy being green, but it’s not easy being introverted either. It may be hard for the Scaling UP! Nation! To believe, but introducing myself in a crowdy room doesn’t come naturally for me. Through the years I have been able to work of a few tricks that I do to help in this situation. I have also found that getting started is the hardest part for me. Once I get started, I'm OK.
A family friend of mine, Donna Srader of The Texas Tech University Career Center has written a webinar series on this very issue. As you will find from this interview, there are many different levels of introversion and introversion does not mean shy. Even though many think that it does. It is my hope that you can take several items from my interview with Donna that will help you get out there and meet people.
More about Donna Srader:
As an introvert, Donna Srader has excelled in a career that has “clients” come to her! As a lead counselor at the Texas Tech University Career Center, Donna has counseled, advised, and coached countless numbers of students and some alumni through the job search process. In addition, she has advised students through her service in the Texas Tech College of Engineering and Honors College as well as at the University of Texas at Dallas. She is an active member of several professional organizations, including SOACE and the National Career Development Association, although she freely admits that she is working to better her networking skills! Also, if you have read this far, Donna would like you to know that she has singlehandedly prevented the zombie apocalypse. How you ask? By planning for it – planning avoids many problems and minimizes the problems that cannot be avoided!

107 Day 1 Of Industrial Water Week (Pretreatment)
Episode 107: Show Notes
Industrial Water Week, Day 1: Pretreatment
Happy Industrial Water Week Nation! We have an entire week that is devoted just for us, the Industrial Water Treater. Last year, a friend of the show, James McDonald launched this holiday to help us celebrate how awesome our job is. Industrial Water Week is always the first full week in October.
Here is what we celebrate:
- Pretreatment Monday
- Boiler Tuesday
- Cooling Wednesday
- Wastewater Thursday
- Careers Friday
There is just so much to do in our job, our holiday requires more than just one day to celebrate. We get a whole week!
Today we celebrate pretreatment. Pretreatment is anything that we do to improve water quality to make it more acceptable for a specific end use. That means filters, water softeners, dealkalizers, and the list goes on. Today, as we celebrate industrial water week, think of all the things we use in our pretreatment processes.
To help us celebrate this awesome holiday week, we took our recording gear to the Association of Water Technologies Annual Convention to take you right into the action. Please enjoy.

Our test kits are our greatest tool. But what happens when the tests we rely on don’t do what they are supposed to do? Yes, your tests know how to lie! They also know how to have a bit of fun and not react the way you are expecting. Adds a bit more fun to our job, doesn’t it?
Well, the fact is our test will always react within the confines of chemistry, even if we don’t understand the chemistry. The only way to truly understand your tests is to understand the chemistry that allows them to work. And there again, another thing to learn in water treatment. This is why I always say that you should learn something every day in the water treatment industry!
Today, we are going to talk about understanding our tests better. I have chosen questions from the Scaling UP! mailbag about tests. What happens when our pinks don’t turn pink, and our blues don’t turn blue? That’s what we are talking about today.
