Industrial Water Week, Day 1: Pretreatment
Happy Industrial Water Week Nation! We have an entire week that is devoted just for us, the Industrial Water Treater. Last year, a friend of the show, James McDonald launched this holiday to help us celebrate how awesome our job is. Industrial Water Week is always the first full week in October.
Here is what we celebrate:
- Pretreatment Monday
- Boiler Tuesday
- Cooling Wednesday
- Wastewater Thursday
- Careers Friday
There is just so much to do in our job, our holiday requires more than just one day to celebrate. We get a whole week!
Today we celebrate pretreatment. Pretreatment is anything that we do to improve water quality to make it more acceptable for a specific end use. That means filters, water softeners, dealkalizers, and the list goes on. Today, as we celebrate industrial water week, think of all the things we use in our pretreatment processes.
To help us celebrate this awesome holiday week, we took our recording gear to the Association of Water Technologies Annual Convention to take you right into the action. Please enjoy.

Nation! I know your favorite thing in the water treatment industry is the equipment we use. Well, maybe not... But it is something that we must use to run our programs when we are not there. Many of us are loyal to a particular brand and model of equipment. There is nothing wrong with that as long as you know what your options are outside of your “comfort zone.” I have found by working with other water treaters that many of us learn how one thing works, get comfortable with it and stop. That is not ok. We have to keep apprised of what equipment is out there to make our systems better.
Our guest today is Blaine Nagao of H2Tronics. Blaine is a longtime friend and colleague of mine. We met through the Association of Water Technologies. Specifically, when he would do the equipment training portion at technical training. I still remember things I learned from him in the class. Blaine agreed to come on the show and talk with us about a few things we should consider when it comes to equipment.

Happy Industrial Water Week Scaling UP! Nation!
We are celebrating Day 2 of Industrial Water Week. Day 2 is all about boilers. One of the ways I like to think about our job is that we are heat transfer, efficiency managers. That means we take heat from one place and transfer it to another as cost-effectively as possible. When we talk about boilers, we are putting heat into the system, so that heat can do some work. This work might be to power something, or it could just be to heat something. Either way, the steam boiler is the “workhorse” of our modern-day world.
On this special holiday episode, we are back at the Association of Water Technologies Annual Convention. Where we talk a bit about steam boilers and chat with friends of our show.
