Sailing Through Life

Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Series - 8

We are setting the “Gold Standard” for skin health and advocating for sun safety in this must-listen episode. Get advice from 4-time melanoma survivor and Olympic Gold medalist Summer Sanders.

Growing up in California, learning to swim from an early age and eventually training for competition and the Olympics, gave Summer plenty of opportunities to be outside in the sun. Over time, this led to her hearing the words “you have malignant melanoma”. From that moment, Summer realized the deficit that exists when it comes to education and promoting sun protection and skin cancer awareness. She decided it was time to use her experience to bring the spotlight to sun safety and save lives.

Today, she shares her experience of her first diagnosis in 2014 to the present day and why she feels so strongly about sun protection and being an advocate.

Summer has accomplished so many amazing things in her life, winning not only two gold medals in the 1992 Olympics for swimming, but also being a TV and sports personality, a mom to 2 incredible children and also the wife of an Olympic skier.

I wanted to include her in this series because she has also faced melanoma four times and continues to thrive in her life. She shows her determination and resilience in this fight against a frightening diagnosis.

Together, let's educate ourselves and others on skin cancer and take action to advocate for our health. Don't miss this potentially life-saving episode.

A Family's Journey Through Melanoma: A Sister's Love and Loss | Dee Conway

Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Series - 9
Melanoma not only affects the individual diagnosed with this disease, but it also has a significant impact on their family and loved ones. In this heartfelt conversation, my guest, Dee Conway shares her story about her sister Rose and her diagnosis of melanoma that ended her life within just 6 months. The emotional toll of melanoma can be overwhelming. Today we discuss the importance of early detection, the dangers of tanning beds, and the need for more education about skin cancer. Dee’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting your skin and taking steps to prevent melanoma.

The loss of her sister at the young age of 35, inspired her to become an advocate for sun safety and melanoma awareness. Dee’s advocacy work through the Melanoma Research Foundation and in Washington DC for the state of Arizona shows her efforts have helped to educate others and to hopefully prevent them from experiencing these tragedies.

If you are interested in getting involved in melanoma advocacy and support, there are many ways to do so. You can start by educating yourself about the disease and the importance of sun safety. You can also donate to organizations that support melanoma research or volunteer your time to help raise awareness and funds. Whatever you choose to do, your efforts can make a difference in the fight against melanoma.

You can connect with the Melanoma Research Foundation here: Melanoma.org
