Turning Obstacles into Opportunities: The Struggle Survival Guide
Productive Not Busy Podcast
05/22/22 • 49 min
For most people, this is one of the more challenging aspects of life. We set goals with enthusiasm, and energetically take action to achieve them. Everything looks great, for a while. Then it happens. The setback. We’ve been stalled out, and suddenly have no idea what to do next. Things come grinding to a halt, and the world feels like it’s coming to an end.
But to a particular personality type, this is the fun part. The obstacle becomes not so much a stopping point as a challenge, an opportunity to discover something new about yourself or about the world you live in. Obstacles are what create growth and make life more enjoyable. It’s a radical thought, isn’t it? In this book, you’re going to find a survival guide to get through those rough places. We’ll start with a look at life and the kinds of obstacles we all face. We’re also going to discover the sometimes-surprising benefits of obstacles. From there, you’ll find out how to take on the obstacles in your life and turn them into opportunities. Are you ready to look at life in a new way? If so, read on. You’re going to be amazed at just how exciting this whole process is!
The dictionary defines the word “obstacle” as “a thing that blocks one's way or prevents or hinders progress.” When you hear the word, you might imagine an obstacle course. As a child, you probably played on several such courses. You might have even created your own with branches and rocks, setting up various challenges in your backyard or on the playground. Your obstacle course might have involved a series of activities such as running, jumping, hopping, or crawling. If you were ever in the military, you’ve trained on the more grown-up versions of these courses, pushing your body to the absolute physical limits to get through to the other side. When a child is confronted with an obstacle course, they never pause to consider the possibility of stopping. They charge full speed ahead, and when they come to something blocking their progress to the finish line, they look at it as a challenge. The obstacle is a puzzle, something to get through, or up, or over until they are on the other side. What’s more, every obstacle becomes an opportunity to show off their physical prowess and thinking skills to their peers. It’s a way of saying, “Watch me do this!”

Don't be a D#@%- what leaders must avoid at all costs
Productive Not Busy Podcast
11/17/22 • 7 min
Some leaders believe that everything revolves around them and that whatever they say is correct. When you become self-absorbed or have an exalted ego, you create your own sense of reality, making it impossible to gain the trust of other team members. Trust is critical. Leaders are unable to generate buy-in from team members at any level of the organization without it.
A genuine sense of community is required to move a health-care system forward. When animosity exists among team members, it is impossible for everyone to put their shoulders to the wheel together. Some leaders believe that encouraging competition among members of their C-suite is a highly effective motivational strategy, but you would be hard pressed to find a successful sports team that thrives on this dynamic. The best teams in any sport emerge from the locker room ready to fight for one another, and they understand that resentment jeopardizes their chances of success. Healthcare organizations are no exception, and leaders who believe otherwise are doomed.

How Successful Entrepreneurs Manage Time Well
Productive Not Busy Podcast
11/18/22 • 6 min
Time management is one of the most critical skills for any entrepreneur. After all, your time is limited, and successful entrepreneurs need to make the most of every minute. Here are a few tips for how to manage your time successfully as an entrepreneur: 1. First, prioritize your tasks. Create a task list and then order them by importance. Making a list of your most important tasks will help you focus on the essential jobs. Of course, some jobs will always take precedence over others. You can also use the Eisenhower Matrix to help you better prioritize your tasks. The Eisenhower Matrix is a time management technique used to prioritize tasks. President Dwight Eisenhower introduced the method and was known for his practical time management skills. The matrix categorizes tasks into four quadrants: Quadrant 1: Urgent and Important. Quadrant 2: Important, but not Urgent. Quadrant 3: Urgent but not Important. Quadrant 4: Not Urgent and Not Important Tasks that are both urgent and important should be at the top of the list. These are the tasks that you need to complete first. The tasks in the second part of the series are also important. Quadrant 3 tasks are urgent, but you can often delegate them to someone else. Quadrant 4 tasks are neither critical nor essential, and you can eliminate these tasks. 1 2. Second, create a schedule and stick to it. Having a set schedule will help you use your time more effectively and ensure that you forget nothing important. Leave some flexibility in your plan to account for unexpected tasks or delays. One effective way of creating an efficient schedule is to use the time-block method. It involves scheduling specific periods for certain tasks. For example, you might block out two hours to work on a project and one hour to check and respond to emails. Once you have created your schedule, try your best to stick to it. 3.Next, delegate tasks. As an entrepreneur, you probably have a lot on your plate. Don’t do everything yourself–delegate tasks to others on your team or hire outside help when necessary. You can free up your time to focus on the most critical tasks. Hire a virtual assistant to handle some of your administrative tasks or use a project management tool to delegate tasks to your team members. If you have trouble trusting, try using the 80/20 rule. This rule states that 80% of the results come from 20% of the effort. Focus on the tasks that will have the most significant impact and delegate the rest. 4. Set boundaries. It’s important to set boundaries between work and personal time. When working, try to avoid distractions and stay focused on the task. Once you’ve clocked out for the day, resist the urge to check your email or do any more work. It would help if you also learned to say “no” when feeling overwhelmed. It’s better to focus on a few tasks and do them well than to do too much and end up doing a poor job. 5. Finally, take breaks. Working non-stop is not sustainable in the long run. You will burn out quickly if you don’t take breaks to relax and rejuvenate. Schedule some time for yourself every day, even if it’s just a few minutes. Take a walk, read a book, or take a nap. Breaks will help you stay focused and productive when you are working.

Keys to being a Great Leader: How to Inspire others and Gain Their Respect
Productive Not Busy Podcast
04/27/22 • 46 min
How does one become a great leader? What does it mean to be a great leader? Not everyone agrees on the same leadership strategies, but most people can recognize good leadership when they see it. John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” In essence, a leader is good at seeing the potential in people and pulling out the best in them. There’s not one cookie cutter idea of leadership, and people with different personalities can be exceptional leaders.
What is your goal for leadership? Are you a CEO of a company trying to increase production? Or are you a leader of a movement hoping to inspire people to follow you in changing the world?

11 QUICK TIPS TO Add Hours to Your Day
Productive Not Busy Podcast
08/08/22 • 7 min
You can’t wave a magic wand and make the day longer. But there are things you can do to save time. And there are things you can do to maximize what you accomplish with your time. In essence, you can add hours to your day. This will require a change in your habits, but many of these strategies are self-rewarding. Once you see the benefits to be gained, you’ll be motivated to continue. Follow these tips to add hours to your day and accomplish more: 1.Put things away when you’re done with them. Rather than creating clutter which gets in your way and is emotionally distracting, put things away when you’re done using them. Tell yourself that a task isn’t complete until everything is picked up.
2. Do easy things during your least productive hours. Everyone has a time of day when their physical or mental energy is low. Schedule easy tasks during these times. It can be a good time to read emails, file papers, or tidy up.
3. Do your most challenging tasks during your most productive hours. Likewise, you have a time of day when your focus and energy are high. Do your most challenging tasks during this time.
4.Reduce the amount of time spent on low-value activities. You might be surprised by how much time you spend watching TV, surfing the internet, or texting friends. Putting this time to better use can easily add a few hours of productive time for most people.
5.Batch your activities. Answer all of your emails at once. Pay all of your bills twice a month. Remember that it takes time to switch tasks and regain your focus.
6.Make use of waiting time. If you’re stuck in traffic, make your phone calls. If you’re waiting at the doctor’s office, deal with your email. Waiting for your child to get dressed? Clean up the kitchen.
7. Track your time. The average person has little idea how they spend their time. Track how you spend your time for a week. Every 30 minutes record how you spent the last half-hour. Divide your activities into different categories and see how much time you spend on each.
8. Get help. Ask for help at work. Give your spouse or children some tasks to do at home. Is your mother constantly asking you if she can help? Give her something to do. Hire someone to mow your grass. Hire a cleaning service. Buy your groceries online and have them delivered. Pay someone to run your errands.
9. Schedule your day. Make the most of each day by making a schedule and sticking to it. Decide the most important tasks that need to be done and do those. You’ll waste less time and add hours to your day.

The Struggle Can Be the Reward
Productive Not Busy Podcast
01/31/22 • 8 min
The average person avoids challenge like he’s avoiding the plague. Struggling isn’t enjoyable, so it’s natural to avoid it as much as possible. There’s an issue with this strategy: There’s a lot to be gained from struggling. There are many aspects to humans that are anti-fragile, meaning that stress makes them stronger. For example: Exercise is a stressor that delivers positive benefits. Being hot or cold, within reason, is good for your health. Fasting is beneficial. Struggling is similar in that it makes you better than you were before the struggle. Consider these benefits of struggling: 1.You learn a lot about yourself when you struggle. You don’t learn a lot about yourself while you’re watching a movie for the fifth time from your couch. When life is easy, you have a natural tendency to coast. Any struggle is a test of your will, ingenuity, and perseverance. 2.It’s a chance to learn how to use failure. Struggles often end in “failure.” Failure is a powerful tool when used properly. If you never struggle, you never get to 1 practice using failure to your advantage. The most successful people fail a lot. They also know how to use failure to come back better and stronger. You also have the opportunity to learn that failure isn’t as traumatic as you thought. 3.You can learn to persevere. The average person won’t struggle very hard, or for very long, before giving up. Any challenging time can be used to increase your perseverance. Success is practically guaranteed if you never give up on your goals. 4. Discipline is required. To overcome a challenge, discipline is required. It’s easy to procrastinate when you have to do challenging things. Discipline is needed to do the hard thing. 5.You become mentally stronger. Struggling can make you stronger psychologically. People that have had an easy life tend to be mentally soft. Only those that have faced struggles have had the chance to build mental toughness. Think about someone you know that’s had an easy life. How tough are they? 6.Your self-confidence increases. Effectively dealing with struggles makes you feel like you can take on the world. You feel confident and powerful. You gain self-confidence by dealing with adversity.

What to do When Challenges Occur: 2 types of stress!
Productive Not Busy Podcast
02/28/22 • 23 min
ife seems to become more stressful with each passing year. The impact of stress can pose serious challenges to your health and happiness. Much of our stress is the result of habits that have a negative impact on our lives. We create our own stress and become less capable of dealing with it effectively.
Habits save time and are similar to the autopilot feature found in commercial aircrafts. By relying on our habits, we free up our mind for other tasks.
While it’s easy to see how diet and exercise habits can influence our waistline, it’s a little more challenging to accept the idea that our habits can either create stress and misery, or promote relaxation and harmony.
But habits can do exactly that.
