Anyhoo...what are atomic habits, and why do we need them?
Have you ever noticed that when you make lofty goals (we used to call them BHAGs in the 1990's), that you never quite get there? That's because biting off a huge chunk of behavior change at one time almost always leads to failure. What you need is a system. Tiny increments of change add up to BIG change over time.
In this episode, Cam and Amelia distill the principles of creating or recreating your systems to set you up for success. Consistency over intensity is the key. We give you the four things that build a habit, and we give you the tools to unwind a habit as well.

cToday we're talking about redefining Thanksgiving Traditions in midlife. This may be especially relevant if your tradition will necessarily change due to a change in status. This could be due to divorce, loss of a parent, being newly empty-nested or simply that you want to try something new!

Traditions are great, until they're not. I think sometimes we fail to recognize this. We expect the 'Norman Rockwell' painting during the Holidays, when in fact, that rarely happens; it's a complete illusion!
We want you to embrace new traditions. Take what you enjoyed from past traditions and let go of the rest. Expectations can be joy-killers.
Cam and Amelia give you a humorous, heart-warming look at what creating new traditions can look like.
02:10 Traditions: Paternal grandparents, husband, separate opinions.
04:45 Large family gathering without alcohol and games.
07:29 Family traditions can change as kids grow.
11:34 Holiday plans with family may change, adapting graciously.
13:51 Thanksgiving with kids: hike, breakfast, brewery, fun.

Are you a stress-eater? Do you eat less when you're stressed? We see both. In midlife, we have to be careful because we can control 2 things: cortisol response and insulin response.
We grew up in an age where we 'ate less and exercised more' to lose weight. That no longer works in midlife.
Join us for part 2 of this series. This episode talks about how stress can railroad your weight loss journey. We know some of this feels counter-intuitive, but we implore you to listen and give these tactics a try!
00:00 Buying jeans was defeating due to size perceptions.
05:39 Incorporate movement into daily habits consistently.
08:50 Midlife feels like navigating a narrow trail.
12:36 Intentional multitasking fragments focus, reduces productivity.
15:37 Circadian rhythm affected by irregular schedules, travel.
19:10 Therapist helps reduce consistent mental stress.
19:50 Boundaries protect health from others' opinions.

26:56 Late exercise caused unexpected weight gain.
31:56 Thin women can have poor bone density.
34:37 Strength training ensures healthier aging and vitality.
36:30 Discovered pickleball with daughter, thoroughly enjoyed it.
38:57 Fasted workouts hinder performance; fueled ones excel.
In this episode, you'll hear:

  1. 🎯 Why "Eat Less, Exercise More" Might Be a Trap!
    • Yup, you read that right. Sometimes, undereating and overexerting can make your body cling to fat like it’s an old friend. Your body needs fuel, not starvation!
  2. 💪 The Power of Strength Training Over Endless Cardio
    • Say goodbye to those marathon treadmill sessions. We'll discuss how 2-3 times a week of strength training can revolutionize your metabolic health, muscle mass, and even bone density.
  3. 😴 The Stress-Sleep-Weight Connection
    • Stress and poor sleep can turn your metabolism upside down. Learn why quality sleep and managing stress might be your secret weapons in this battle.

Boy, is this important! As we've told you before, sleep is one of the pillars of health, a foundation, you might say.
We care so much about sleep, that this is the 2nd time we've addressed it. The first time was June of 2021, (Listen HERE), and here we are again, just after the change to daylight savings, talking about sleep. It's THAT important.
Learning how to sleep is a real thing. Maybe you slept 'like a baby' in your 20s, but you're not sleeping that well now and wondering why. There are a myriad of reasons why sleep in midlife is a challenge. It all matters from hot flashes to noise to blue light to alcohol consumption, and it affects your sleep.
We tackle all these things and more in this episode. Plus, we give you some tips for overcoming.

We are SO excited to bring you this 3-part series to being 2021!

We know Christmas is over but doesn't want more gifts? This series is 3 Gifts to Give Your Midlife Self:

  • Forgive your former self
  • Be present with your current self
  • Prepare your future self

This idea came from Jon Acuff, who hosts the podcast, All It Takes Is a Goal and we thought it was so fabulous that we are riffing on it to apply specifically to midlife.
So what does it mean to forgive your former self?

  • Have you ever felt stuck because of a decision you made in the past?
  • Do you find yourself ruminating over past actions or words?
  • Does the soundtrack in your mind remind you that 'you shouldn't have said that' or that 'that was a dumb thing to do'?
  • Do you let past actions ruin current joy?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it's a sign that you aren't forgiving your former self..
Join Cam and Amelia as we give you real life examples of how we've inadvertently robbed ourselves of joy by reliving questionable decisions and actions. We tell you how we short-circuited the negative self-talk and moved on to more joy and contentment.
We give you our tips for letting go of expectations (joy killers) and how to experience, acknowledge and work through any feelings of guilt or shame and then how to let it go!
As always, please subscribe, leave us a review, and we would love it if you'd take a screenshot of yourself listening and post on Social and tag us, @thehelpfulplate, @heymomma_cam, @midlife.mommas.
