Inner Archeology with Sarah Turner & Emily Pennystone

The tension that seems to exist between the rational and the intuitive does not necessarily have to be a conflict. If we can bring these two spheres into harmony and balance, we can draw forth a stronger and more complete understanding and approach to our lives! In this episode of the show, we unpack the ideas of the mystic and the scientist, and how leaning too far one way can leave us scared and dogmatic. From the many different systems and frameworks that we all have access to, to the inner wisdom and knowing that can be found through the right questions, there are so many paths to a fulfilling and self-actualized existence. It is only when we adhere to external and ill-fitting boxes that we find ourselves in trouble, experiences that both of us have had, especially in our younger years! In this world of dogmatic science and the still-dominant patriarchy, it is so important for inquisitive and strong-willed women to follow their hearts, and we hope this episode is a clear reminder of that. So, to hear all about it and share in this ever-blossoming flower of realization, be sure to listen in today!

Key Points From This Episode:

  • An introduction to the ideas of past lives, soul groupings, and human design.
  • The attraction of different systems for understanding our lives in today's world.

  • Keeping a playful and lighthearted approach to mysticism; avoiding dogma and fear.
  • The self-righteousness that can very often be attached to science.
  • Cultivating a healthy balance between the rational and mystical, and how this relates to feminine and masculine energies.

First Jobs & Choosing Entrepreneurship

Not only does entrepreneurship give you control over your space and time, but it also encourages you to grow as a person, which then creates positive effects throughout your life more broadly.

Today on the show we sit down to talk about our entrepreneurial endeavors, the moments in our lives that turned us off working a nine to five, and some of the realizations we had along the way.

Our conversation begins on the subject of lighting and how something as seemingly small as that could (and should) switch a person off of having to be in an office environment all day. We then get into the many different jobs we have worked, talking about the things about them that we loved and hated, and what encouraged us to get into a more self-driven approach to making money.

Entrepreneurship is not without its challenges though, and we speak about some of the nightmare clients we have worked with and what we learned from our experiences. We touch on the role of intuition in decision-making and the need to learn how to trust it, the value of having a good sense of self-worth for setting the right price for one’s services, and a whole lot more.

Ultimately, these ideals are all about self-development, and we end off by expressing our gratitude that entrepreneurship allows you to do what you love while also helping you to show up to each day as a better person than you were the last.

Key Points From This Episode:

  • The simple joys of having a partner who is on the same wavelength as you.
  • Challenges around finding good lighting and the best solutions out there.
  • How our hosts respond to lighting and how it has even influenced their life decisions.
  • Perspectives on the way that the small things in our environment add up and affect our mood.
  • Why our hosts got into entrepreneurship and how Emily’s career choices had to do with motherhood.
  • The different jobs Emily has had and how her pregnancy affected her studies.
  • How much of a shift it is moving from an office job into a situation where you can control your time.
  • The jobs Sarah worked as a child and why she hated working at Williams Sonoma.
  • Sarah’s experiences of working amongst hazardous waste at Ecusta.
  • One of the moments where Sarah decided to be an entrepreneur while working as a researcher.
  • The highs and lows of working at a wedding dress shop for Emily.
  • Why Emily’s worst job experience was as a music teacher at a pre-school.
  • What Sarah learned about entrepreneurship from being an events planner and why she quit.
  • A nightmare client Sarah worked with as a copywriter and how he embarrassed himself.
  • How to deal with bad clients by taking on work that uplifts rather than drains you.
  • Learning to tell whether feelings of resistance are caused by fear or intuition.
  • Emily’s gratitude for her jewelry business and ability to make money while being creative.
  • Memories of laughing so hard you pee and how good it feels.
  • A time where Sarah did not listen to her intuition and ended up working for a con artist.
  • Learning to value yourself, and charging clients accordingly!
  • How to trust your intuition and why frequent crying is so positive.
  • Where Sarah’s feelings around emotional expression being invasive came from.
  • The personal development that comes with entrepreneurship and the positive effects of this.

Being Comfortable in Paradox

As humans, we like to see things in black and white but in fact, life is so nuanced, complex, and dynamic, and there is hardly anything that’s entirely good or entirely bad. Rather than thinking of things as “either, or” we should be thinking about them as “both, and.” The traits that you see as your biggest weaknesses are likely to also be some of your greatest strengths. We’re both on our own personal development journeys, constantly learning about ourselves and each other, and in this episode (as always) we let you into our heads as we discuss paradoxical personalities, contradictory beliefs, trauma responses, and the importance of being flexible and open to change.

Key Points From This Episode:

  • The unexpected interaction that we had during one of our previous episodes, The Mystic and the Scientist.
  • How other people can impact the way we present ourselves.
  • The value that lies in having discussions about ideas that are not fully formed.
  • Sarah shares an example of how she and her romantic partner complement one another.
  • Paradoxes in our personalities.
  • Another podcast episode that everybody should listen to!
  • Reasons that we attract certain people.
  • An explanation of the concept of ‘splitting the ambivalence.’
  • What traveling teaches Sarah about herself.
  • Why flexibility is key to the success of a relationship.
  • How Emily’s religious trauma affected her choice of partners.
  • Step one in the challenging process of changing established patterns.
  • What a morning routine can bring to your life.
  • Our experiences of breaking out of the boxes that other people have put us into.
  • The core of most conflict situations, and how understanding this can improve your relationships.
  • Important learnings that can come from trauma responses.
