The Only Thing That's Certain Is Change
Inner Archeology with Sarah Turner & Emily Pennystone
11/03/21 • 50 min
We’ve all heard the saying “life is short,” but if you’re truly living in the present moment, that couldn’t be further from the truth (in a good way!). Being present is our natural state, but because of the way our lives are structured, and the pervasiveness of social media, it’s become something that we have to actively practice in order to achieve. Both of us have been on challenging personal growth journeys over the past few years, not to mention the global pandemic we’re all in the midst of, and what we’ve realized is that the only thing that we can know for certain is that things are going to change. And accepting that fact is so liberating! Join us as we explore this concept, as well as the importance of not talking from wounds, remembering past versions of yourself with kindness, not waiting until you feel ready to create something, understanding the hills and valleys of mental health struggles, and the therapeutic benefits of angry squatting while listening to Ashnikko. The Complicated Relationships with Our Bodies
Inner Archeology with Sarah Turner & Emily Pennystone
01/26/22 • 72 min
There are few issues as thorny as body image, but who better to open the discussion than best friends with very different perspectives? Today on Inner Archeology, we talk all about our bodies and how Emily has spent years coming to terms with hers, while Sarah didn't struggle with this too much — which, weirdly enough, created other insecurities. We dive into the reasons why each of them has experienced body image the way they have, as well as why it’s so important to include people who are “on the outside” of an issue in the discussion. Find out how pregnancy and motherhood changed Emily’s perspective, and why science inspired Sarah to revere her body. We address the impact of our role models and the media on our own body image, as well as how patriarchal expectations have negatively influenced women’s appreciation for pleasure. S Sarah describes her experiences exploring other people’s concepts of sexuality, and how this has contributed to her confidence in her own body. Emily reveals why she feels we have a choice in our appreciation for our bodies, families, and situations, and why she is teaching her daughters to include their bodies and their good health in their daily gratitude. For all this, and so much more, tune in today!
Key Points From This Episode:
- An introduction to today’s topic (body image), and why it makes Sarah uncomfortable.
- Why Emily developed a negative self-image and the experiences that reinforced it.

- The impact of different religions on women’s body image.
- How sharing your struggles to help others gives your life meaning.
- The idea of being in a relationship with your body: treat it like a beloved partner or friend.
- Finding pleasure in your body, and how it links to body image.

Entrepre-curious? This one's for you!
Inner Archeology with Sarah Turner & Emily Pennystone
09/14/22 • 54 min
Let’s be honest. Building the life of your dreams and achieving the freedom to do what you want – when you want – is hard.
But with the right attitude and willingness to get outside of your comfort zone you can embrace entrepreneurship and make it happen!
Here’s why you should leave “old school” beliefs behind, and what you can do to become an entrepreneur and put people over profit.
Key Points in Episode:
- So many of us just move through life being so unconscious about all the beliefs that are actually calling the shots. Reality-check time: have you ever noticed that?
- Do you want to embrace entrepreneurship? Just go for it! It isn’t about beliefs people had 10 years ago, there’s much more accessibility now. It’s an opportunity to break free from constraints around what life and careers should look like. Wouldn’t you want to give it a shot?
- What you see as pillars today can actually be that as a result of your parents’ beliefs being passed down to you. Look at what the world looks like and is today, and create your own beliefs!
- Your limiting beliefs and lack of awareness are what’s holding you back from doing whatever you’re dreaming of doing. #LifeTruth
- Sarah said it best: ‘What is true for me may not be true for my children.’ Technology is changing so rapidly, so you have to keep your eyes open. This is your life we’re talking about!
- Some people believe that you need to have a special gene or something to be an entrepreneur. Are you one of them? Emily used to believe that herself, but she would be the first to tell you that that’s BS... Be confident, believe that you have what it takes and give it a shot.
- Step aside men-run businesses, here comes feminine entrepreneurship – where it isn’t about ‘profit first’ but about ‘people first’.
- People saying ‘I’m not an entrepreneur because I could never not have the security of my paycheck each week or month’ is a bunch of you know what... A regular paycheck isn’t promised nor guaranteed, it’s just regular. But it could disappear at any moment (just think about the 2008 recession or the pandemic).
- Have you ever experienced good discomfort? You know, that thing that change and growth come from?
- Reality-check time: you’re a person that grows. You’re going to make mistakes, you’re going to learn from them, so never stop believing in yourself.
- Isn't it just wild that it's a radical concept that we have the right to enjoy our life?

Embracing Empathy
Inner Archeology with Sarah Turner & Emily Pennystone
11/23/22 • 29 min
Have you ever noticed that when you start seeking external validation you become dependent on it? And how should you approach situations where you’re on the receiving end of not-so-nice behavior or thoughts?
In this episode of Inner Archeology, Sarah and Emily talk about the repercussions of dealing with hardship, the role of empathy when dealing with people who experience something you have experienced, and who you should actually seek validation from.
Key Points In Episode:
- Today's conversation piggybacks on what Sarah and Emily talked about in the last episode: generational differences when it comes to parenting.
- Have you ever noticed how, when noticing someone parenting differently than you, certain subconscious thoughts are triggered?
- When that happens, you start evaluating your own childhood and sometimes this helps you realize that what you experienced wasn’t OK. Sometimes you feel ready to look into it, while sometimes you don’t. That’s OK, don’t be too hard on yourself!
- Emily shares that, when it comes to experiencing pain and trauma, people tend to fall into one of two camps: those who survived and who are maybe better because of it, and those who went through something painful and they don’t want you to experience the same thing.
- Sarah sees a third group: people who went through trauma and who stay in touch with the empathy toward the person they used to be when they experienced hardship.
- Let’s be honest: we all have had situations where something arises and our gut reaction isn’t the nicest. Don’t worry, it happens. Sarah suggests thinking about how you’d like to show up in the world and acting accordingly. #EmbraceEmpathy
- Has it ever happened to you to have felt resentment toward someone who has got it “easier” than you? Think about your children having access to pretty much anything but yet complain about things you, as a child, would have only dreamed of having...
- Sarah and Emily go over how Emily dealt with things when she was on the receiving end of Sarah lacking empathy, as well as how to deal with similar situations.
- When you’re seeking external validation for something that would really need your internal validation you become dependent on constant reassurance. Have trust in yourself, you’ve got this! Most times, your own – internal – validation is all you need. #QuoteOfTheDay

Staying True to Yourself by Changing Your Beliefs
Inner Archeology with Sarah Turner & Emily Pennystone
02/15/23 • 37 min
Sarah and Emily take a deep dive into the world of judgment, belief, and change.
In this episode, they talk about how your beliefs are formed, what has an impact on them, and what to consider and do to change your beliefs and achieve positive change.
Key Points In Episode:
- This episode of Inner Archeology is the second to last episode of the season because Sarah’s going on maternity leave – but don’t worry, the show will be back in a few months!
- Plus, you can get more exclusive content on the Inner Archeology Patreon page.
- Sarah feels that the desire to appear consistent is a core human desire.
- Want to be open to changing your beliefs? Then, you need to have conscious awareness of that, no doubt. Because yes, you CAN change your mind.
- Super interesting point by Emily: ‘if there’s a belief about your identity, you’ll automatically just reinforce that. Even if it’s complete B.S., you’ll double down just to preserve the sense of identity and familiarity.’ Do you agree?
- It’s so empowering to bring your beliefs and to have conscious awareness of the fact that they can change – and you have the power to decide and change them.
- Glennon Doyle is someone who has had the guts to change her beliefs and to do so publicly. Look at her for inspiration.
- Many of the beliefs Sarah has changed are paired with judgments, ideas, or expectations she had. Before the beliefs could shift, those ideas and expectations had to change first.
- For most of her life, Sarah didn’t want to have kids... and look at her now, about to become a mother!
- Sarah has stopped making 5-year plans because so much can change in a year (just look at the last couple of years).
- If you’re trying to figure out what your beliefs are, make sure to make a distinction between beliefs that were just handed to you and those you have intentionally chosen to adopt.
- Emily shares that she had to earn the right to participate in her creative expression because it was a luxury, not something she necessarily deserved. #ChangedBelief
- Sarah had judgments toward pole dancing, thinking it wasn’t a hard thing to do... turns out she was wrong.
- Ever felt like working out is punishment? Or that you work out because you don’t like your body? Emily thought the same but, by her own admission, things couldn’t be further from the truth.

The Mystic & The Scientist
Inner Archeology with Sarah Turner & Emily Pennystone
01/12/22 • 69 min
The tension that seems to exist between the rational and the intuitive does not necessarily have to be a conflict. If we can bring these two spheres into harmony and balance, we can draw forth a stronger and more complete understanding and approach to our lives! In this episode of the show, we unpack the ideas of the mystic and the scientist, and how leaning too far one way can leave us scared and dogmatic. From the many different systems and frameworks that we all have access to, to the inner wisdom and knowing that can be found through the right questions, there are so many paths to a fulfilling and self-actualized existence. It is only when we adhere to external and ill-fitting boxes that we find ourselves in trouble, experiences that both of us have had, especially in our younger years! In this world of dogmatic science and the still-dominant patriarchy, it is so important for inquisitive and strong-willed women to follow their hearts, and we hope this episode is a clear reminder of that. So, to hear all about it and share in this ever-blossoming flower of realization, be sure to listen in today!
Key Points From This Episode:
- An introduction to the ideas of past lives, soul groupings, and human design.
- The attraction of different systems for understanding our lives in today's world.
- Scientific explanations for manifestation and what seemed previously inexplicable.
- Experiences of allowing things to happen and making space for special encounters.
- Feelings of confusion and discomfort around mysticism in our younger years.
- Selecting the parts of systems that resonate and constructing your own canvas.
- Sarah's memory of energetic connection and a deeper sense of knowing at a younger age.
- Listening to the different parts of ourselves; accessing the subconscious and the dream self.
- Accepting the knowing and responding to the urge to reach out to others.
- Allowing space for astrology and the parts of it that make sense to us!
- Keeping a playful and lighthearted approach to mysticism; avoiding dogma and fear.
- The self-righteousness that can very often be attached to science.
- Cultivating a healthy balance between the rational and mystical, and how this relates to feminine and masculine energies.
- The relationship between land ownership and the oppression of women.
- The work that goes into finding your inner wisdom and what knowing feels like.
- Situating ourselves within the history of ostracized and exceptional women!

Beliefs Are Helpful But Not True
Inner Archeology with Sarah Turner & Emily Pennystone
03/09/22 • 75 min
We are the way we are because of what we’ve experienced. We choose our beliefs, consciously or subconsciously, to make sense of the world and to create an identity. Once you understand that, you will have so much more control over what you choose to believe. Today, we start with a quote by CD Baby founder, author, and entrepreneur Derek Sivers that stood out to Sarah at a recent Genius Network event, which forms the topic for today’s conversation: beliefs are helpful but not true. For some, the idea that there is no universal truth can be a scary one but, tuning in, you’ll discover that there is value in finding the excitement and endless possibility in uncertainty! We touch on the validity of staying informed at all costs and unpack an Instagram post by emotional alchemist, Xavier Dagba, which delves into the practice of vibrational precision and peace consciousness rather than war consciousness. We also share our perspectives on embracing the unknown, affecting change with authenticity, and the incredible power of joy, plus so much more! We hope you’ll join us for this impactful conversation.
