Your Band Sucks (At Business) - The Secret To Getting Sh!t Done | Project Management Software
play

09/08/20 • 31 min

If their is one thing that people (especially musicians) think they are great at- but in reality are quite terrible at - it's multitasking.

Turns out, science backs me up on this one. We actually can't multitask - we just get better at switching between different tasks incredibly quickly. Which is great when you're playing a drum kit, but when you're trying to juggle all the parts of running a business - it's terrible.

Enter project management software: your new digital brain.

Just a heads up, that this episode strongly endorses an app called Trello. It's literally amazing/life changing. We aren't an affiliate of there's, and aren't being compensated in any way - we just really, really, love their product and believe it's the perfect fit for creative types who need to get their business on.

Trello, for those new to it, is a free and easy to use project management software tool that allows you to create interactive pin boards to track the progress of anything you wish.

For example, you might have a board for your daily life, tracking what you need to get done that day, or you might have another board that is tracking the progress of your latest album in the making.

Maybe you have one more that is tracking the promotion and marketing of your last single. The choice is yours!

If you haven't already, download Trello and jump in and experiment - you'll love it.

But anyways, back to the point: humans suck at multitasking. And remembering things. So the solution?

Well we outline it in this episode for you! But to get you started (if you prefer to read these blog posts instead of listen - but seriously, listen. We are wait more detailed.) the main immediately benefitting method I want you to try is what I refer to as 'the brain dump'.

Make a list in Trello called 'Master List', or something equivalent, and then get to work entering every single task you want, need, or would like to do. From tiny little things like cleaning the glove compartment of your car, to big dreams like playing Madison Square Garden - put it all on there. You won't believe how freeing this is - because now you don't have to try to think about it all at once, or remember all of it. Your new Trello brain will do it for you.

I start every single day but opening up my Trello board and seeing whats next, and as soon as I have an idea - I add it to my master list (to be sorted later) so that I'm never forgetting those spur of the moment ideas! It's amazing!

This episode might seem like it's on the advanced side of productivity and organization, but in truth it's the ground floor. If you're not doing this yet, you're not even in the building. Get to it!

Hope you enjoy the episode!

Radio has long been a holy grail of achievement for bands around the world. And for good reason! Getting your music played alongside your favourite artists, being introduced by amazing DJ's, it all really DOES feel fantastic when it happens to you!
In more recent years, a focus has shifted from focusing on radio towards Spotify playlists - but there is something lost in that trade that is surely worth considering
Jon Williams is the founder and host of What Was That Radio, a world class music enthusiast, and all around one of the most passionate humans I've come into contact with in my life in the music industry.
We've been dying to get Jon on the air since he started What Was That Radio, an online internet station that is focused on delivering new music to listeners around the world, to learn more about his new station and what our listeners, and bands around the world, should know about the online radio industry.
And hint: It's something that I'm blown away I haven't focused on earlier!
There is a WORLD of opportunity out there for bands that are willing to put in the work.
Why?
Well there are many reasons, but the one that I want to focus on is "trust". And trust, is something more than valuable than nearly anything else when trying to position your band as a legitimate contender in your genre - and it is also something that Spotify, and other streaming apps, does NOT give you!
Why does radio give more trust to listeners than streaming apps like Spotify? Well the big one is that radio has DJ's, and listeners develop very real relationships with their DJ's. So if a DJ recommends your music to their audience - you can bet your bottom dollar that their audience is going to take that suggestion serious.
We talk about this, and plenty more, on this episode of Your Band Sucks (At Business) with the one and only Jon Williams!

You're wasting your time. You're spinning your wheels, grinding away, working harder than you've ever worked before - but it seems that for every inch you gain, you lose a mile.
Let me introduce you to the answer for your problems: The Pareto Principle!
Vilfredo Pareto, realized something astounding. In his case, it was the 80% of the land (in Italy) was owned by 20% of the population. Fast forward a little bit, and this has become one of the most fundamental and established business principles in existence. Now thought of in this simple form: 80% of the effects comes from 20% of the causes.
But wait - how does this relate to being in a band?
Not only does it relate to being in a band, it relates to EVERYTHING! You can take this principle and apply it to your homework, personal life, work life, you name it. And yep, you can definitely apply it to your bands career!
My favourite way to think of it is in regards to productivity. What is taking up 80% of my time, but only giving me 20% of the my desired results. Or vice versa: what is only taking up 20% of my time, but getting me 80% of my results?
Applying this principle, and the realizations that come along with it, can be extremely transformative.
The most famous example scenario that is commonly given is for a sales person to realize that 80% of their revenue is coming from 20% of their clients. This is huge. A realization like that makes it clear that you need only do one thing: focus on the 20%. Focus on the 20% and your business will explode in growth!
But first, we need to figure out how to apply this principle to being a musician, and we've done exactly that in this weeks episode of the Your Band Sucks (At Business) podcast!

Your Band Sucks (At Business) - The 3 Keys To An Effective Website

The 3 Keys To An Effective Website

Your Band Sucks (At Business)

play

08/18/20 • 37 min

Sometime during the fall of myspace.com, a trend emerged: every band needed a website.

Somehow, for reasons still unclear, that idea strengthened and, suddenly, bands were often getting websites up before they had even recorded their first song.
In the YBS camp, that's a bad call right off the bat. Quality recorded music is the best thing you can do for your business. But still, I can see the reasoning. You needed a place for people to find you online.
But then comes Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms, and just like that - the need for a website was gone.... Except it didn't go anywhere. Still, to this day, bands are spending hundreds of dollars a year on websites that do absolutely nothing for their business.
Which is exactly why we made this episode!
Because it's not having a website that's bad, it's having a website that doesn't do anything that is bad.
Here's a breakdown of what we mean:
1. A website should be able to generate revenue for a band.

2. A website should provide value for the visitors,
and,
3. A website should serve as a central hub for all news and information regarding your band.
Most bands don't even manage hit one of these points. Some manage to scrape by on the 3rd point, but other than that - it's slim pickings out there!
So how can we tick all of these boxes? Jump into this episode of the Your Band Sucks (At Business) Podcast and find out!

Imagine if your next big goal (getting signed, having a song scorch up radio, being offered the gig of your life, and so forth) was only a day away from being realized, but you didn't know it. What if you quit today? You'd have gotten so close, within 24 hours of your goal in this example, but because you didn't know and didn't have the patience and perseverance to wait, the opportunity is gone.
Well that is exactly what nearly happened to Marcus and I with our band, Band of Rascals. In fact, it nearly happened more than once!
The fact of the matter is that you don't know how close you are to you goals. You might be minutes away from it, or years, but the fact remains the same - the timing is out of your control.
So what can you control?
Determination, preservation, and patience.
Music is an industry built on art - which is subject to all sorts of opinions and notions. The music you love may be despised by others. There is no true north to tell you if what you're doing is 'good'. The only compass you have is yourself, your belief in what you're making, and that of your supporters - if you're so lucky to have any!
In this episode of the podcast we discuss this concept in more detail, using an example eloquently laid out by Ryan Holiday in his book, The Obstacle Is The Way.

We hope you enjoy it!
