Are You Leading by Example?
Women Taking the Lead
05/09/22 • 12 min
Are you leading by example?
This is a trick question because the reality is you are always leading by example. The question is whether you want the people you lead to do what you are doing.
Like it or not, people are watching what you're doing and they're listening closely to what you're saying. And, the higher you go up the leadership chain the bigger an example you become. There's a saying when you reach senior leadership, you are whispering from a megaphone.
Your people are watching you closely to determine what is acceptable behavior and attitudes, and what is not. The question is, are you exemplifying the behavior that you would like to see in the people that you lead? Are your actions consistent with your message?
Leading by example may not always be easy but it’s a must if you want the best chance of hitting your goals and having harmony in the workplace.
In this episode we’re covering what it means to lead by example and how to gauge how effectively you are modeling the behavior you want to see.

Two "Soft" Skills That Exponentially Uplevel Your Leadership
Women Taking the Lead
05/30/22 • 18 min
As a leader, are you looking to develop any of the following between yourself and others in your organization: more trust, stronger relationships, buy-in, and commitment? How about executive presence, that X-factor that has others stop and take notice?
There are a couple of not-so-soft skills, that when applied in combination, will have those around seeing you in a whole new light and admiring you as a leader.
These skills are: directing your full attention and listening deeply. It sounds really easy, and it can be once you’ve developed these skills and made them a habit. Unfortunately, most of us think we are better at these skills than we actually are and if you want the benefits, you need to take an honest look at how you’re doing.
In this episode we’re covering why giving those around you your full attention and listening is so important, and ways to develop these skills.

You, Seeing from Multiple Perspectives
Women Taking the Lead
07/04/22 • 20 min
Have you experienced the eye-opening magic of seeing from more than one perspective?
When we are children, we believe we are the center of the universe. At that stage in life, we have a difficult time considering why someone would see things differently than we do.
If fact, if someone didn’t agree with us, we made up a story about why this person could possibly not agree with our outlook.
It takes work to shake out of this default way of thinking and start making a habit of considering how other people are seeing things. However, the reward of staying open-minded and seeing things from multiple perspectives is new ideas, new opportunities and new solutions that you may have missed if you only look at things from your own vantage point.
Now take this ability as an individual and add to it a diverse team of people who all see the world differently. If this team can respect and appreciate each other for the unique perspectives and experiences they all bring to the table, this is your dream team.
In this episode, we’re going to cover the skill of considering and incorporating multiple perspectives as a leader, why it’s so important, and how you can incorporate it into your leadership.

[Coaching] Are They Really Judging You?
Women Taking the Lead
08/08/22 • 38 min
Could anyone possibly meet the expectations you have for yourself?
Many of the women I coach have such high expectations for themselves, they sacrifice health and happiness to meet them.
Sometimes the driver is the thought that others are expecting a lot from you. But if you looked closely, is that true? Are others watching you and expecting you to overdeliver all the time?
Or are you assigning them those judgments because in reality you’re judging yourself.
I had a fantastic conversation with Andrea about trying to meet your own unrealistic expectations, delegating, having healthy boundaries, and asking for help.
If you feel like you’re doing too much for everyone else, and not getting enough time for you, or for the people and things that are also important to you, listen in.

How to Make Staying Organized Easy to Do
Women Taking the Lead
09/26/22 • 17 min
There’s a French cooking term mise en place that means to set in place. It is a method of preparation taught all over the world that maximizes efficiency and reduces errors.
There are 5 steps to mise en place:
- Know your recipe — necessary ingredients, cookware, and baking times
- Prepare your ingredients — clean, chop, mince... whatever is required
- Arrange your ingredients — appropriate size bowls, positioned logically
- Prepare your workstation — set the oven temperature, clean the utensils
- Arrange your tools — similar logic applied to cookware and necessary equipment
This level of organization in advance, not only increases the chances of an optimal outcome for the recipe, it provides an easier and even enjoyable experience for the cook.
There’s no scrambling around looking for that tool or ingredient. There’s no disappointment after serving the dish realizing an ingredient has been missed or measured incorrectly.
This episode covers how staying organized at work increases your chances of optimal outcomes, and makes work easier and more enjoyable. Not only that, staying organized makes you look good in the process.

Women Taking the Lead
07/12/23 • 43 min
Have you ever had to manage a difficult team member?
It can be a challenge, especially when personalities clash and work styles don't align. As women leaders, we tend to be conscientious of relationships and want everyone to enjoy their job. This is fantastic and yet we also need to be aware that this can sometimes hold us back from having difficult conversations and giving honest feedback.
In this on-air coaching episode, Louise, a Head of Department in education, shares her struggles with managing a team member who lacks urgency and falls behind on tasks.
If getting on the same page with someone has been a challenge for you, this is episode is going to give you some things to think about.

Hot Topic: Menopause and Your Workplace with Tamsen Fadal
Women Taking the Lead
08/02/23 • 22 min
How companies support their female employees that are going through perimenopause and menopause is starting to hit the headlines.
Think about it. Most women go through the menopause transition between the ages of 45 and 60. This is when women are in their professional prime.
It’s nearly impossible to be your best at work when you are dealing with hot flashes, fatigue and brain fog. This is especially true when there’s no support for what you are going through.
There are changes on the horizon, but we’ll usher in these changes much more quickly if we can become active participants in the solution.
For that reason, I’ve invited Tamsen Fadal on the Women Taking the Lead podcast.
Meet Tamsen FadalTamsen Fadal is an Emmy award-winning newscaster and author. In addition to being the PIX11 News primetime anchor, Tamsen is an advocate for women in the next chapter of their lives. She is an Ambassador for Let’s Talk Menopause, a nonprofit invested in changing the conversation around menopause, and an expert for menopause in the workplace
In this episode Tamsen and I discussed:· What’s going on in workplace around menopause now.
· What companies can do to support their female employees who are going through menopause.
· Best practices of a menopause policy.
· What can individuals do to support their colleagues and get the ball rolling on making these changes in their own companies.

Do You Believe in Modeling Leadership? Take Time Off
Women Taking the Lead
03/28/22 • 15 min
What if we shifted our perception of what it means to take time off?
Instead of viewing down time as laziness or a failure, what if we saw time off as an investment in ourselves? It’s about valuing yourself enough to make that investment in yourself and modeling that behavior for others.
This episode is making the case for taking time off and why taking that much-needed break will yield big returns.
