[Coaching] How to Give Feedback to a Difficult Team Member
07/12/23 • 43 min
Have you ever had to manage a difficult team member?
It can be a challenge, especially when personalities clash and work styles don't align. As women leaders, we tend to be conscientious of relationships and want everyone to enjoy their job. This is fantastic and yet we also need to be aware that this can sometimes hold us back from having difficult conversations and giving honest feedback.
In this on-air coaching episode, Louise, a Head of Department in education, shares her struggles with managing a team member who lacks urgency and falls behind on tasks.
If getting on the same page with someone has been a challenge for you, this is episode is going to give you some things to think about.

A Model for Giving Feedback to Your Team
Are you looking to enhance your leadership skills and create a positive feedback culture within your team?
Constructive feedback is an essential aspect of effective leadership. It empowers team members to grow, improve, and reach their full potential. That's why I have Lynae Remindino back. She’s sharing best practices for providing feedback that drive positive change.
Better yet, Lynae is also sharing a model that guides leaders through feedback meetings, ensuring a collaborative and supportive approach.
In this episode Lynae and I discuss:
💡 The GROW model: Goal, Reality, Options, Way Forward. This framework helps guide leaders through the process of providing coaching and feedback.
💡 The importance of reflection first: Take time to evaluate your own role in setting expectations and identify areas for improvement. This prepares you to approach the conversation constructively.
💡 Understanding the value of feedback: Ask yourself why providing feedback is important and how it will benefit the individual, the team, and overall performance.
💡 Shifting your mindset from conflict to coaching: Approach feedback conversations as opportunities for growth and collaboration, rather than focusing on correcting someone or creating conflict.
💡 Fostering open dialogue and understand perspectives: Seek to understand the other person's viewpoint, as their interpretation of events may differ from yours. This allows for a more comprehensive and constructive conversation.

Be Human, Be Available and Get to Know Your People
There are companies that have had success creating gender equality in the workplace. This is demonstrated by representation of nearly 50% or more women throughout all levels of leadership in the organization, including the executive level.
Are you curious to know exactly what is making the difference in those companies?
For this episode I invited Dana Sente, who serves as Vice President, Training and Development for Veris Residential. In this role, Dana identifies and oversees training and employee development for all property positions. She also works closely with the Company’s COO on ways to educate employees about corporate values related to ethics and responsibility.
Dana has developed education programs to support both hard and soft skills for Veris Residential employees. Training opportunities include yearly real estate classes, maintenance certification classes, LEED® certification and other ESG training.
In this episode Dana and I chatted about:
- Dana’s own leadership path
- What she has put in place at Veris Residential to make sure women’s leadership development needs are being met
- What companies can do to develop a culture of trust for women
- The importance of being human, being available and getting to know your people
