West Coast Ultra Podcast - Jack, Josh and all things bicarb

Jack, Josh and all things bicarb

West Coast Ultra Podcast

For the first time, I am joined by two guests. Jack Gray and Josh Elston-Carr. Saying they are accomplished club runners is an understatement as they have represented their country but that's not the reason they are on the show...

Looking at what is happening on the running scene there are two things that I think are contributing to records being broken all over the place, high-carb fuelling, helping performances and recovery and the use of sodium bicarbonate - and so to Jack and Josh...

Last year they founded Bi(Carr)b, an innovative and affordable sports supplement that helps athletes reach their full potential by harnessing the lactic acid buffering power of bicarbonate of soda. Their deep understanding of middle-distance and endurance running has shaped every decision in the development of Bi(Carr)b and helped them to spot a gap in the market. They knew there had to be a better, more accessible way to harness the lactic acid-buffering power of bicarbonate of soda and today we share their story.

If you do want to try Bi(Carr)b then I squared away a cheeky little discount code for you, active till the 7th of March at midnight, you can get 10% off using code ULTRA10

We talked about:

  • Their early years in running and how they progressed to impressive performances and international appearances
  • The story behind Bi(Carr)b, early successes and what the future holds
  • The proof is in the pudding - it simply works for the athletes that take the product
  • A bit of a deep dive into how the product works (with some sciency stuff),
  • Top tips for using it and how it can (and has) been applied at the ultra distances

The Hot Takes:

  1. Using yourself as the science experiment and seeing what works
  2. It's easy to feel like you are in balance if you are doing something that you love
  3. The very best athletes are the ones that can do things in moderation

H-O-T-T-O-G-O

This week's episode is a solo one where I look at some beginner or wannabe ultrarunners' worries.

Be warned, this is just my take on these things - my opinion and I try to come from a place of love and support.

As you know I focus my coaching on people new to ultrarunning or people who want to improve so these are conversations that I have already had in some shape or form, so if you do want to come into my coaching then at least you know where I will be coming from.

  • I'm too slow
  • I don't have the time to train for a marathon, let alone an ultra; I don't have hours to train every weekend
  • I hated my road marathon, why would I run further
  • I don't have trails or hills to train on
  • I don't have a crew, in fact, what even are crews???
  • I hate hills
  • I don't like running in the dark
  • I don't want to get lost/ I'm awful at navigation
  • Self-doubt- it's too hard for me, too long, only for elites, I could never, etc

If you want to grab a call to see how I can help you move into ultrarunning then get in touch here: https://teamrunrun.com/coach/david-taylor-glasgow-running-coach/

The Andy Blow Episode

As we kick off season 3 I am joined by CEO and Founder of Precision Fuel and Hydration, Andy Blow.

Andy became an accomplished triathlete but struggled when it came to racing in the heat - and here is where the story of Precision Fuel and Hydration begins.

We talked about:

  • How Andy's personal experience led to the formation of the company
  • How PF&H has evolved and how it has helped athletes in their race and training strategies
  • What might be next in the world of hydration and fuelling
  • What tools are on the PF&H website and how can you use them to tailor your fuelling and hydration

The Hot Takes:

  1. It is all about individualisation! Everyone is unique in their fluid, salt and carbohydrate intake needs so the strategy also must be unique to you
  2. There's not going to be a new nutrient found so the advances will be on how to manage (and carry) hydration and fuel
  3. Think about life balance with a wider lens - not just day to day or week to week but annually so that you can spend time on the things that matter

Let's Connect

  • You can follow Precision on Instagram @prescisionfandh and at their website: https://www.precisionhydration.com/
  • The free Fuel and hydration PLanner is here: https://www.precisionhydration.com/planner/and if you want to go that one set further you can also book a hydration and fuelling strategy call
  • If for some reason you aren't already following me on Instagram then you'll find me here: @davidultrarunner
