The Ricky Weatherston Episode
West Coast Ultra Podcast
04/04/25 • 85 min
You asked and I delivered. A number of you have mentioned to me that Ricky would be a great guest and you were absolutely right.
Known for wearing a pick wig during races (more about that story in the episode) he has done so much more and has a fascinating story to tell. Here are some of the things we spoke about:
- The early days in fitness, from boxing to Muay Thai
- How he found his way into running, from parkrun to BootCamp to longer events
- He uses running as a way of having adventures with different people
- The support and encouragement that he gives to others - very inspirational
- Of course, where the pink wigs came from comes into the conversation
The Hot Takes:
- How to use running to find your tribe
- Don't take it too seriously - it is all about having fun!
- Create boundaries so that you can give your best to the things that matter

Another week and another of the Stewarton Ultrarunning legends takes to the mic.
This time one of the guys that was there when it all began.
In this episode, we talk to Scott about

- The dramatic way that Stewarton Ultrarunners was formed

- How he thinks about his mileage and training and balancing this with the other areas of his life
- His wife's energy balls
Also, we get a toofur in this episode - 2 tips instead of just one. (time to look out for any of the spare COVID tests for that one)

Jack, Josh and all things bicarb
West Coast Ultra Podcast
02/28/25 • 76 min
For the first time, I am joined by two guests. Jack Gray and Josh Elston-Carr. Saying they are accomplished club runners is an understatement as they have represented their country but that's not the reason they are on the show...
Looking at what is happening on the running scene there are two things that I think are contributing to records being broken all over the place, high-carb fuelling, helping performances and recovery and the use of sodium bicarbonate - and so to Jack and Josh...
Last year they founded Bi(Carr)b, an innovative and affordable sports supplement that helps athletes reach their full potential by harnessing the lactic acid buffering power of bicarbonate of soda. Their deep understanding of middle-distance and endurance running has shaped every decision in the development of Bi(Carr)b and helped them to spot a gap in the market. They knew there had to be a better, more accessible way to harness the lactic acid-buffering power of bicarbonate of soda and today we share their story.
If you do want to try Bi(Carr)b then I squared away a cheeky little discount code for you, active till the 7th of March at midnight, you can get 10% off using code ULTRA10
We talked about:
- Their early years in running and how they progressed to impressive performances and international appearances
- The story behind Bi(Carr)b, early successes and what the future holds
- The proof is in the pudding - it simply works for the athletes that take the product
- A bit of a deep dive into how the product works (with some sciency stuff),
- Top tips for using it and how it can (and has) been applied at the ultra distances
The Hot Takes:
- Using yourself as the science experiment and seeing what works
- It's easy to feel like you are in balance if you are doing something that you love
- The very best athletes are the ones that can do things in moderation

The Kyle McLaughlin Episode
West Coast Ultra Podcast
01/31/25 • 78 min
Last week we were in Arizona, this week we are just along the road in Irvine (and about five minutes from my house).
We are joined by Kyle McLaughlin owner of McLaughlin Sports Massage. While not an ultrarunner himself, he has seen and worked with various people from the average Joe to high-performance sportspeople.
He takes a holistic approach to understanding the needs of his clients and his latest field of study in nutrition adds even more expertise and knowledge to help people move and more importantly feel better.
We talked about:
- Finding his passion (and obsession) with health and nutrition while working on the railways
- How he found the opportunity to shift gear into a new field of sports massage
- Managing the challenge of study while building and running a business
- How he goes about his practice of improving people's wellbeing
- Thoughts on nutrition, diet and fuelling for endurance athletes
- Top recovery methods (including ones that don't work) and much more
The Hot Takes:
- Individuality is key to getting the right approach for you, be open and listen to what your body is telling you
- You may have a different path so focus on what you are passionate (and obsessive) about
- Focus as much on recovery as training itself, that way you will remain consistent and in doing that will improve your performance
