West Coast Ultra Podcast

You asked and I delivered. A number of you have mentioned to me that Ricky would be a great guest and you were absolutely right.

Known for wearing a pick wig during races (more about that story in the episode) he has done so much more and has a fascinating story to tell. Here are some of the things we spoke about:

  • The early days in fitness, from boxing to Muay Thai
  • How he found his way into running, from parkrun to BootCamp to longer events
  • He uses running as a way of having adventures with different people
  • The support and encouragement that he gives to others - very inspirational
  • Of course, where the pink wigs came from comes into the conversation

The Hot Takes:

  1. How to use running to find your tribe
  2. Don't take it too seriously - it is all about having fun!
  3. Create boundaries so that you can give your best to the things that matter

Let's Connect

  • You can follow Ricky on Instagram @x3rkw and of course you will be able to see his awesome adventure pictures on the FADs and FAMs pages too
  • If for some reason you aren't already following me on Instagram, then you'll find me here: @davidultrarunner

The Nicky Merrett Episode

During my Tea Round a couple of weeks ago I bumped into this rather chatty lady at the top of Robinson (pretty sure she was trying to beat us to the top). We then had a fun conversation about quite a few things - voom bars, poles and some of the hills we were going to climb that day (sorry it was in the lakes - Fells)

It was a little while later that I realised I had been talking to a bit of a lakes legend and someone I had heard about in various online groups, including a poles course the day after the Tea Round.

Join me as I have a fun and energy-filled conversation with Nicky where we talk about:

  • How she moved from the corporate life to a calling in the fells
  • The way that she built her business around an outdoor lifestyle
  • The fun challenges that she has planned over the next couple of years and so much more
  • Here are the discount codes we talked about:
  • For 20% off Silva: HIKING-HIGHS-SILVA-20
  • For 20% off Voom (my fave) HIKING-HIGHS-VOOM-20
  • For Leki: 10%, but you will need to contact Nicky, and she will sort you out and offer lots of advice on sizing, fit, etc.

The Hot Takes:

  1. Are you just going through the motions in life, doing what you (and others) think you should do rather than what you want (or need) to do?
  2. Take a minute and pause to see where you get your energy from
  3. How can we be more present and 'at one' with the outdoors and nature - not as hippy/woowoo as it might sound

Let's Connect

  • You can follow Nicky on Instagram at @hiking_highs or on the website https://hikinghighs.co.uk/
  • The Patterdale Parish Boundary race link that we talk about is here: https://hikinghighs.co.uk/events/parish-boundary/ - it is extremely good value for money too
