10 Ways to Stay Sane and Productive in Lockdown
07/21/20 • 12 min
Today I want to talk about ten strategies that keep me sane and productive during lockdown, or any other time I’m working from home day after day. If you’re new to remote work, want to spice up your routine, or just need to listen to something for ten minutes to entertain yourself, this is going to help you.
Get up at the same time every day. When you stop following a routine, things can get out of whack pretty easily.
Get dressed. There’s a mentality that goes along with being dressed versus having no pants at 5:00PM. It makes you take yourself more seriously.
Scheduling. If there’s no boundaries, you may not be disciplined with your time or you may overwork. Put everything on the calendar so you can maintain balance with work and free time.
Reach out to your friends and family. The world has slowed down and it’s a great opportunity to catch up with people.
Workouts are important. Don’t miss or neglect them, and hold yourself accountable.
Make time for your hobbies. Time block the things you want to do and maybe haven’t had the time to try out yet. It’s a bit easier to make time for them right now.
Schedule breaks. This is important as it’s easy to get caught up in your work which leads to burnout and ultimately, less productivity.
Don’t get interrupted. This is a big adjustment for most people as you’re not used to being around your significant other or family. Switching tasks can be detrimental.
Do a work challenge. Push yourself, because now is the time to be building and not pulling back.

19 Lessons Learned in 2019
Sometimes I experience deafness when it comes to advice from people that are further ahead of me. The advice just doesn’t mean anything to me, and it’s not until I look back and see my struggles that I finally understand what they were saying. Without that perspective, it can be hard to understand the advice we get.
Each year, I look back and see what lessons I learned so I don’t make the same mistakes. Let’s walk through 19 things I learned last year.
1. If you’re already having success, it’s not about how hard you work; it’s how much unique value you are bringing to the marketplace.
2. There are ebbs and flows that are out of your control. Ride the wave instead of being mad that it exists.
3. Don’t assume that growth will always be at the same pace.
4. Education and mentorship are some of the most important activities in a business.
5. Longevity is cooler than maximizing revenue and profits.
6. There are only a few things that make a difference in a business.
7. Read more. This goes along with taking the time to think.
8. Personal growth translates to business growth, and the same goes for shortcomings.
9. Find something to win at outside of business.
10. Money doesn’t change your personal relationships. They require just as much effort.
11. Money does reduce stress as long as you are building systems.
12. There’s a cost to everything. Simplify your life.
13. There’s no reason you can’t do the things you want to do right now. You just have to pay the price.
14. Skills and leadership beat everything else, as always.
15. Execution is so much more important and so much harder than ideas.
16. We claim to understand more about ourselves than we actually know.
17. Learn from all subjects and all industries.
18. Do cool projects with cool people.
19. The things that take the longest to do are the most rewarding.
These are the lessons I’ve learned, and I hope I can internalize these lessons moving forward.

Dealing With Self Sabotage (Fear Goals)
Self-sabotage is an all too common obstacle in many of our day to day lives, whether it’s in our careers, relationships or health in general. What do you do when you start talking yourself out of success just as you reach the precipice?
To unravel why we self-sabotage, you first have to understand that humans are more often than not operating on autopilot. We learn behaviors that protect us from what we fear. To overcome this, you have to be open to asking questions about why we behave in this way.
Acknowledging and being conscious of when you are self-sabotaging is an incredibly useful tool that I employ. If you catch yourself in the sabotage spiral, tell someone how you are feeling. That alone can help to break habit patterns.
In order to reprogram these behavior habits, I believe you have to change your mindset by changing your inputs. Look for peers or role models that believe and think differently to you. Break the cycle of safe behaviors by being unsafe and taking those risks that you are afraid of.
Don’t take advice from someone who hasn’t done what you want to. Seek out those that have consistently proved they know how to achieve what you are after. Once you find your inspiration, put yourself in their shoes. Ask yourself what they would do in your situation.
Set your fear goals. Look at what you are afraid of and meet it head on. Remember that we create the circumstances that we fear the most, which means we can create the solution too.
