Spiritual Bypassing and Why We Need to Know About It
07/05/23 • 11 min
In this solo episode I introduce the concept of Spiritual Bypassing as an important aspect to consider in the intersection of spirituality, mental health and healing. Spiritual Bypassing is a term coined by John Welwood, a transpersonal psychologist and author. It refers to a practice by which we may use spiritual ideas, beliefs, rituals, etc as a way to avoid dealing with difficult situations, emotions, feelings or thoughts.
As therapists and healers it is our responsibility to recognize this practice in both ourselves and our clients. Spiritual wellness involves connecting to ourselves and others in authenticity, being open to the present moment and the ability to sit with difficult situations, emotions, feelings and thoughts knowing that they do not define who we are. Our spiritual practices in essence support us in these moments rather than take us away from them.
If you are a practitioner who would like to be interviewed around the concept of Spiritual Bypassing please reach out to me at [email protected]

Rumi Poem The Guest House
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

Psychotherapeutic Reiki for Grief, Loss and Bereavement with Elizabeth (Liz) Hides
Are you curious about the use of Reiki in a traditional psychotherapeutic setting?
In this episode I interview Elizabeth (Liz) Hides, a fellow Social Worker, Reiki Master/Teacher and Kindred Soul. Liz and I connected in the summer of 2022 when she found me while doing an internet search for Psychotherapeutic Reiki. We clicked immediately and have since joined forces in developing a community of practitioners who use Psychotherapeutic Reiki as a modality for healing within a psychotherapy practice. Listen in as Liz talks about how spirituality played a part in her own healing including how she came to know that Social Work is her Soul's path and how she came to use Reiki to support her clients in moving through their grief.
