On today's episode I speak with lead trainer with the IFS Institute, Susan McConnell. Susan recently published a new book on Somatic IFS and it may be my new favorite IFS book.

Here is an outline (all of the times are 'ish')

Check in-

Meditation- 11-16:00

Reconnecting Mind and Body, what disconnects us? - 25:00

Importance of Embodying Self- 33:00

Witnessing through the Body- 38:00

Body Systems- 43:00

The Elements- 55:00

At the end of each podcast I ask guests if there is anything else they want to cover. Typically, I cut this out but I LOVE how Susan processes this question so I left it in - 62:00

I start crying at the end too... oh boy.

I loved the meditation so much I made a separate podcast for that. Thinking you (and I!) can revisit that again and again.

Want more?

Get her book "Somatic Internal Family Systems Therapy: Awareness, Breath, Resonance, Movement and Touch in Practice."

  • Noticing and getting to know parts
  • Small, intentional acts of joy and self-care for caregivers' resilience
  • Prioritizing self-care to prevent burnout
  • Caregivers should identify what recharges them and prioritize it, even if it means saying no to other requests

In this week’s episode I chat with Audrey Davidheiser, licensed psychologist and Certified IFS therapist and IFSI-approved clinical consultant about working with grief and anger through the Internal Family Systems lens.

We discuss:

  • How tenacious parts like grief and anger hold on, often because they feel they are protecting something important, like legacy or family loyalty. What can we learn by befriending these tenacious parts rather than fighting them?
  • How your cultural background can influence your emotional experience, and how you can work with legacy burdens in your healing process
  • Grief as a multi-dimensional experience – it's not just about sadness, but can include anger, regret, or even relief
  • Religious Grief and Trauma – how religious trauma can exile parts of ourselves, such as those feeling grief or anger, and the need for compassionate acknowledgment of them
  • All parts grieve differently and how to welcome all parts into the grieving process. How can understanding the different ways we grieve help us heal?
  • Honoring angry parts – befriend anger by understanding its role in protecting something important
  • IFS and Grief – how IFS uniquely holds space for grief

Favorite Quotes:

  • “It's not just that everybody grieves differently, but every part of you grieves differently as well.”
  • "Angry parts are there because they are protecting something valuable.”

About Audrey Davidheiser: Audrey Davenheiser is a licensed psychologist, certified IFS therapist, and the author of the forthcoming book, Wholehearted Grieving. She specializes in working with trauma survivors, with a focus on grief and spiritual abuse.

Audrey is leading a session at the 2024 IFS Annual Conference, October 24-25, 2024, called Working With Grieving Parts.

The One Inside: An Internal Family Systems (IFS) podcast - Parts Journaling (and dating) with Kylie Feller

Parts Journaling (and dating) with Kylie Feller

The One Inside: An Internal Family Systems (IFS) podcast

play

10/04/24 • 35 min

On today's episode I chat with Kylie Feller, a Canadian clinical counselor and Level 3 Certified IFS therapist specializing in complex trauma. We chat about two topics she's passionate about: parts journaling and dating. (Our dating convo begins at 15:50).

First, Kylie shares tips on connecting to our parts through journaling. Her book, IFS Daily Parts Journal, offers a structured method which she first developed as her own self-care tool. We explore how journaling can be a valuable way to check in with our parts, unblend, and create inner openness, and why it isn't always as easy as it seems.

Then we switch gears to explore dating through an IFS lens. Sharing personal insights from her experience in the dating scene, she shares how dating presents opportunities to notice trailheads, meet new parts, and practice Self leadership.

We discuss:

  • Journaling with our parts can be like having a self-led therapist, helping us track, check in, and create openness towards different parts of ourselves.
  • Resistance to journaling or parts work is common, and it’s helpful to approach these resistances with curiosity and compassion.
  • There is no one-size-fits-all approach to IFS practices; journaling, singing, art, and even walking can be ways to connect with parts.
  • Dating offers a unique opportunity to explore our parts, activating trailheads that can lead to greater self-understanding and healing.
  • Kylie’s approach to dating with IFS emphasizes self-love, curiosity, and the importance of building internal relationships before seeking external connections.
  • The concept of trusting one's system and allowing for natural growth and change in relationships is key to healing through IFS.

Kylie will be presenting at the 2024 IFS Annual Conference in a session titled: Parts Journaling: Develop The Habit of Checking in With Your Parts.

About Kylie Feller: Kylie is a Canadian clinical counselor, digital nomad, and Level 3 Certified IFS Therapist. She has personally experienced the healing power of IFS and is passionate about helping others on their self-healing journeys. Kylie is the author of the IFS Daily Parts Journal, designed to help individuals connect with their parts through thoughtfully formatted journal pages. She is currently working on her next book focused on dating through the lens of IFS.

Connect with Kylie:

Mentioned in this episode:

One of my favorite quotes: "Dating is like an experiment. Every encounter becomes a mirror reflecting back my parts, allowing me to get curious, speak for them, and ultimately, love myself more deeply." – Kylie Feller

IFS and Relational Intelligence with François Le Doze

The One Inside: An Internal Family Systems (IFS) podcast

03/15/24 • 56 min

On today's episode I chat with Dr. François Le Doze, MD. He is a psychotherapist, an IFS therapist, and trainer and has been a neurologist for nearly thirty years in a teaching Hospital in Caen, France. He has always been interested in the relationship between the body and mind, and his knowledge of neuroscience allows him to integrate recent neuroscientific findings into his psychotherapy practice. He's actively developing a model of psychotherapy called Relational Intelligence® based on his clinical experience and expertise.

In this episode we chat about:

  • How crisis caused him to reconsider his relationship with IFS and Psychotherapy
  • The influence of Polyvagal Theory on his Relational Intelligence Model
  • "This is not a Part, but a disruption in my nervous system."
  • "This isn't You; but a State of you."
  • A key clarification in the Relational Intelligence model: Self-regulation = what is happening in your body; Co-regulation = what is happening between us.
  • Bubble Theory: using meta-cogniton to connect and calm the nervous system

Two a-ha moments for me:

  1. "We need to DO something TO the system and not expect the system will be able to unblend from the Inside Out."
  2. Self Energy must be the regulator the client's system. This Self Energy can originate from either the Self of the client or the Self of the therapist. The client's Self CANNOT lead if their nervous system is dysregulated. In such cases we must tend to the saftey within the therapeutic relationship before proceeding (just as children experience Self of their parents through attachment before their own Self).

On today's episode, I chat with Dorothea Hrossowyc and Ingrid Helander. Ingrid and Dorothea along with Tyler Haaren, Joya Lonsdale, Julia Sullivan, and Paula Shulman led a workshop on "Healing Racism From the Inside Out, Unburdening our Parts around Race and Racism", at the 2016 IFS Annual Conference, and were a part of the plenary session, along with Tyler, Joya and Donna Dellal-Ferme at the 2017 IFS Annual Conference titled Self-Led Activism. Releasing Your Inner Change Agent.

I encourage you to listen and observe your own parts' reactions. Use these as trailheads to do your own work and meet the younger parts of you who hold pain.

We talk about this book a lot-- check out this article: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-author-speaks/201709/my-grandmother-s-hands

They share their own personal stories and their experiences working with their racist parts.

What is said over and over is the power of the model to heal, and the importance of following the trailheads of our own racism to get to our exiles and our own ancestors and legacy burdens.

We talk about so much- indigenous peoples, polyvagal theory, classism, capitalism, grief and shame. And, we laugh... I promise.

Read about The Dakota 38 here

Ingrid has an ebook/workbook that uses IFS and Polyvagel theory to help people with chronic worry. It is found at www.calmyourworries.com

She also will be offering a mastermind membership in 2021 to help people move from worry and self-doubt to calm self-confidence. For more information, sign up for her newsletter at Ingrid's website

Dorothea is available to work with you around Unburdening our Racists Parts or Parts Affected by Racism.

She also offers workshops on Working with Anxiety to Release Unconscious Limiting Thoughts, Working with Anger or Angry Parts as a Powerful Tool, Setting your Internal GPS... Your I-GPS, and Healing Parts around Boundaries. Find out more about Dorothea and her offerings at her website here

We talk about several handouts which you can get by contacting her. Email her to receive "The Concrete Work of Eliminating Your Racism" which is a list of trailheads at [email protected].
