06/16/23 • 15 min

Welcome to the inaugural episode of The Spiritually Curious Therapist. This is a solo episode in which I introduce myself and the impetus for this podcast. I share parts of my journey and where I am today including an intro to my "spiritual seeking" part who hates to take a back seat and has been the driver for the launch of this podcast and infinite deep dives into all things spiritual, metaphysical and holistic. This ultimately lead me to make a conscious decision to embrace my spiritual quest as part of what makes me an attuned and curious therapist.
After listening to the episode in full and considering questions to ask interviewees, I realized that I did not adequately socially locate myself so I am adding here. In addition to being a Social Worker, Psychotherapist, Psychotherapeutic Reiki Practitioner and Spiritual Seeker I am a Cis White Female who uses She/Her pronouns. I am also a mom, wife, sister, daughter and friend!
If you are curious about anything having to do with healing, spirituality, psychotherapy, metaphysics or holistic and how they intersect with mental health and wellness subscribe now so you don't miss an episode! I promise each one will be enlightening, mystical and will either satisfy or spark your Spiritual Seeking part.

The Spiritually Curious Therapist - Introduction to Chakra Theory and Emotional Wellness
play

09/07/23 • 9 min

Have you ever experienced a day (or maybe several) where everything seems to be going wrong and you can't quite find the ground beneath you? Maybe you feel untethered, disconnected or fearful for no known reason. If so, it might be because your root chakra is unbalanced. This is one example of how our chakras can effect how we feel in day to day life.
In this brief solo episode I introduce the overlay of Chakra Theory and social/emotional development. Understanding how our chakras develop, what they do, and how we can tend to them on a daily basis is key to a successful physical, emotional and spiritual wellness diet.

Are you curious about the use of Reiki in a traditional psychotherapeutic setting?
In this episode I interview Elizabeth (Liz) Hides, a fellow Social Worker, Reiki Master/Teacher and Kindred Soul. Liz and I connected in the summer of 2022 when she found me while doing an internet search for Psychotherapeutic Reiki. We clicked immediately and have since joined forces in developing a community of practitioners who use Psychotherapeutic Reiki as a modality for healing within a psychotherapy practice. Listen in as Liz talks about how spirituality played a part in her own healing including how she came to know that Social Work is her Soul's path and how she came to use Reiki to support her clients in moving through their grief.

The Spiritually Curious Therapist - Spiritual Bypassing and Why We Need to Know About It
play

07/05/23 • 11 min

In this solo episode I introduce the concept of Spiritual Bypassing as an important aspect to consider in the intersection of spirituality, mental health and healing. Spiritual Bypassing is a term coined by John Welwood, a transpersonal psychologist and author. It refers to a practice by which we may use spiritual ideas, beliefs, rituals, etc as a way to avoid dealing with difficult situations, emotions, feelings or thoughts.
As therapists and healers it is our responsibility to recognize this practice in both ourselves and our clients. Spiritual wellness involves connecting to ourselves and others in authenticity, being open to the present moment and the ability to sit with difficult situations, emotions, feelings and thoughts knowing that they do not define who we are. Our spiritual practices in essence support us in these moments rather than take us away from them.
If you are a practitioner who would like to be interviewed around the concept of Spiritual Bypassing please reach out to me at [email protected]

Rumi Poem The Guest House
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

As a therapist/healer are you sometimes overwhelmed by a feeling of responsibility for healing or helping others?
Join me in this episode as I talk with Kara Bailey Mifflin, LPC and Certified IFS Therapist about how spirituality has allowed her to release the responsibility of fixing others and in turn be fully present, compassionate and expansive with herself, her clients and all of their combined parts.
Kara has had a 30 year career in mental health and recently opened her own private practice in 2021 during the pandemic. Although she has been a therapist for many years, it wasn't until she entered her own recovery process through Adult Children of Alcoholics and Family Dysfunction 8 years ago, that she found spirit, a "power greater than ourselves", in healing. This spiritual journey as well as her own IFS therapy has opened opportunities for radical growth and connection with her parts, especially her inner child, which has led to expansion and joy in her own life as well as the work she does with others.

In this episode I talk with Lisa Mesecar, OTR. Lisa is a Pediatric Occupational Therapist who has worked with children in several different settings throughout her 25 year career. Currently she works within a school district which is something she thought she would never do. Her work is not only with the children but also the parents, the teachers and the system as a whole. She is also the mother of a child who developed a disability in late childhood. As his needs became more complex she found herself on the other side of the fence, experiencing for herself the rollercoaster of emotions that go along with the unpredictability of having a child with a disability. Lisa talks about how her spiritual practice has allowed her to stay grounded as both a parent and a professional in this data driven world where outcomes don't necessarily mean healing, and healing doesn't mean fixing.

The Spiritually Curious Therapist - Bridging the Science and Spirituality Gap through the Chakras with Isabel Wells
play

09/19/23 • 46 min

Have you heard of the Chakras but haven't quite been able to grasp what they actually are? Maybe you have "opened" or "balanced" chakras in a yoga class or meditation but aren't really sure what that means.
In this episode I chat with Isabel Wells aka Izzy. Izzy currently serves as the Director of ReikiCafe University which is a spiritual institute offering trainings in Shamanic Reiki, coaching and spiritual entrepreneurship. As a former student of nursing and psychology turned Reiki practitioner, Izzy works to bridge the gap between science and spirituality busting the myth that Chakras are too "woo" for mainstream healing culture.
In our conversation she shares how her own health crisis led her on a journey to Eastern and Ancient approaches to healing when Western medicine fell short. It was here that she came to know the Chakras and learned how they can be used holistically to address psychological, spiritual and physical disEase.
