The Mayo Football Podcast - Championship Preview - Mayo News Football Podcast 2021 E9
play

06/20/21 • 59 min

The rapid-fire National League campaign is now over with the action getting underway in this year's Championship next weekend. Mayo take the field next Saturday, when they face Sligo in a Connacht SFC quarter-final tie at Markievicz Park.
In this episode of the Mayo News football podcast we use the short lull in hostilities between League and Championship to preview this year's race for the Sam Maguire. Billy Joe Padden hosts the Championship preview episode and he's joined by fellow Mayo News (and Irish Examiner) columnist Colin Sheridan and by Mick Foley of the Sunday Times.
In a wide-ranging discussion, the lads look ahead to the summer campaign from a number of different angles. Their focus initially is on Mayo, where, naturally, they zero in straight away on the loss that Cillian O'Connor represents to a Mayo team that start out as favourites to retain the Nestor Cup but whose more expansive plans this year have been undercut by the Achilles injury suffered by their talisman.
The lens then widens out to consider Galway and Roscommon, both of whom were relegated from Division One last weekend and who seem destined to meet in Connacht at the semi-final stage. Their respective strengths and weaknesses are examined, as are their prospects for provincial honours.
Casting the net wider still, the lads survey other potential last-four competitors, before their gaze fixes on the quixotic endeavours of John Maughan and Mickey Harte. Both men have walked the line more than once on All-Ireland day but this year their respective charges in Offaly and Louth - both of whom enjoyed League promotion this year - are set to meet in the first round of the Leinster Championship.
Wrapping up this Championship preview episode, all three provide their predictions on who'll come out of Connacht and then they go on to declare who they think will get their hands on Sam in August.

The Mayo Football Podcast - Episode 13: Leitrim Review - Mayo News Football Podcast 2021 EP13
play

07/15/21 • 61 min

Mayo galloped to an easy win over Leitrim last Sunday to book their place in this year's Connacht football final. The Nestor Cup decider will, like last year, be a knockout clash against old rivals Galway, with the game down for decision on Sunday week.
In this episode of the Mayo News football podcast we review Mayo's win over Leitrim on Sunday, but only after first discussing some dramatic developments on the field and off it in the days since then. Mayo News sports editor Mike Finnerty hosts the show and he's joined by his Mayo News colleague Edwin McGreal and by John Gunnigan of the Mayo GAA Blog.
The lads start with the hottest topic of the moment, which is the decision to shift the venue for the Connacht final from MacHale Park in Castlebar to Croke Park. The pros and cons of the venue shift are teased out, both from the perspective of the two teams and for supporters, with a far bigger attendance catered for at HQ but with increased travelling for most fans, at a time when public health concerns remain a significant factor.
Next the debate shifts to the drama that played out in Tuam on Tuesday evening, as Mayo's U20 team prevailed over Galway in a penalty shootout in the Connacht U20 semi-final. The lads review the evening's action and we also hear post-match thoughts from Mayo U20 manager Maurice Sheridan and from Colm Flynn who dispatched the decisive penalty for Mayo.
The lads eventually get around to discussing the Leitrim game, focusing on both the event itself and on the players who impressed for Mayo on the day.

08/12/20 • 49 min

With no inter-county action this summer due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the club championships within the county are generating more interest than usual. Clubs are also getting the chance to play championship ties in summertime and the two rounds of games contested so far have produced several high-quality contests. In this episode of the Mayo News football podcast we fix our focus firmly on the club action. Host Rob Murphy is joined at Westport by Mike Finnerty, Sports Editor of the Mayo News, where they look back on what was a rip-roaring drawn match between the Covies and Charlestown. Rob also catches up after the game with ex-Charlestown and Mayo star John Casey, who was delighted by his club's defiant stand in a game where they simply had to avoid defeat. From there we switch to the Mayo News offices on the Fair Green in Westport where Mike gets together with his Mayo News colleague Ger Flanagan to review all of the weekend's action. We also hear post-match audio, courtesy of Mayo GAA TV, from Charlestown's Tom Parsons and Padraig O'Hora of Ballina Stephenites. The Mayo Football Podcast - Senior Final Review - Mayo News Football Podcast 2020 E26
play

09/21/20 • 62 min

It's been the best Mayo Senior football Championship in ages and yesterday's final between Knockmore and Breaffy finished off the season in fine style. Ray Dempsey's hard-working, energetic Knockmore side are the SFC champions for 2020, their youthful zest and hunger to succeed proving too much for a Breaffy team who, once again, tasted defeat at the final hurdle. In this episode of the Mayo News football podcast we take you into MacHale Park for a taste of the action, as well as plenty of post-match reaction. Rob Murphy and Mayo News sports editor, Mike Finnerty anchor the show and they're joined in MacHale Park prior to throw-in by Edwin McGreal of Breaffy and the Mayo News and former Knockmore manager Eamon Clarke, as together they take us through the dramatic Moclair Cup decider. Post-game, Mike catches up with Knockmore's Kevin McLoughlin and Kieran Langan while Rob gets Ray Dempsey's reaction to his charges' title success. Finally, a rueful Edwin McGreal gives his overview of the game and reflects on yet another final that slipped out of Breaffy's grasp. The club Championships have zipped by at a fair old clip this year, garnering way more attention than normal as they've done so due to the absence of any inter-county action this summer. This action reaches a crescendo at the weekend, as the destination of the McDonnell, Sweeney and Moclair Cups are all set to be decided. This is Part 1 of 2. The Senior Final Preview. Over these two episodes of the Mayo News football podcast we preview the three county finals that are set to be contested at MacHale Park this weekend. Mayo News sports editor Mike Finnerty, along with his Mayo News colleagues Edwin McGreal and Ger Flanagan, look ahead to all three finals and assess where they might be won or lost. Mike also gets the views of Austin O'Malley on how the Intermediate decider between neighbours Balla and Kiltimagh might go while Sean Carey returns to the podcast to chat with Mike about the much-anticipated Senior final between Breaffy and Knockmore. The Mayo Football Podcast - Gavin Duffy Meets Billy Joe - Mayo News Football Podcast 2020 E19
play

08/06/20 • 64 min

Billy Joe Padden's interviewing skills have been a major feature here on the Mayo News football podcast in recent months and in this episode he's back with another special guest. This time, Billy Joe sits down for an in-depth discussion with Mayo GAA and Connacht Rugby star Gavin Duffy. The Ballina native enjoyed a varied sporting career, mainly in rugby where he was capped ten times for Ireland and played for both Connacht and English side Harlequins but also in gaelic football. In fact, Gavin's involvement with Mayo bookended his playing career, as he was a midfielder on the Mayo minor team that reached the All-Ireland final in 1999 and then, in 2014, he earned a surprising call-up from James Horan to the Senior county panel.
