The Mayo Football Podcast

Mayo galloped to an easy win over Leitrim last Sunday to book their place in this year's Connacht football final. The Nestor Cup decider will, like last year, be a knockout clash against old rivals Galway, with the game down for decision on Sunday week.
In this episode of the Mayo News football podcast we review Mayo's win over Leitrim on Sunday, but only after first discussing some dramatic developments on the field and off it in the days since then. Mayo News sports editor Mike Finnerty hosts the show and he's joined by his Mayo News colleague Edwin McGreal and by John Gunnigan of the Mayo GAA Blog.
The lads start with the hottest topic of the moment, which is the decision to shift the venue for the Connacht final from MacHale Park in Castlebar to Croke Park. The pros and cons of the venue shift are teased out, both from the perspective of the two teams and for supporters, with a far bigger attendance catered for at HQ but with increased travelling for most fans, at a time when public health concerns remain a significant factor.
Next the debate shifts to the drama that played out in Tuam on Tuesday evening, as Mayo's U20 team prevailed over Galway in a penalty shootout in the Connacht U20 semi-final. The lads review the evening's action and we also hear post-match thoughts from Mayo U20 manager Maurice Sheridan and from Colm Flynn who dispatched the decisive penalty for Mayo.
The lads eventually get around to discussing the Leitrim game, focusing on both the event itself and on the players who impressed for Mayo on the day.

Episode 14: Galway Preview - Mayo News Football Podcast 2020 E14

That oft-posed footballing question - will Galway bate Mayo? - is set to get another airing this coming Sunday, this time in the novel surroundings of Croke Park. It's there that the destination of the Nestor Cup for 2021 will be decided and in this bumper episode of the Mayo News football podcast we preview this weekend's Connacht final.

Mayo News sports editor Mike Finnerty hosts this extended preview show and he's joined by Kevin McStay and Colin Sheridan to look ahead to the coming Connacht showdown at GAA HQ. The lads discuss the significance of Sunday's game for both teams, given that their likely All-Ireland semi-final opponents, Dublin, have been far from impressive recently. They also compare and contrast Mayo and Galway's season so far, single out the players who make both teams tick and look at the key match-ups that will likely shape the outcome of the game on Sunday.

We then take the temperature on the other side of the fence, as Mike catches up with former Galway footballer and regular podcast guest Barry Cullinane who gives us a sense of the mood in Galway this week. Barry talks about the pressure on Padraic Joyce to deliver a Connacht title and explains why he thinks Galway should be confident they can dethrone Mayo.

To coincide with the Connacht final the podcast has teamed up with Intersport Elverys in a competition where the exciting prize is three of the new home Mayo jerseys. All you have to do to enter is leave a review of the podcast on whatever platform you listen to it on. The three winners will be announced in our Connacht final review episode next week.
