Guest Booking Tips: It’s Not About the Numbers

The Lazy Girl's Guide to Podcasting

play

05/10/23 • 8 min

As a podcaster, it's easy to get caught up in the idea that booking a big name or someone with a large social media following will automatically boost your podcast's popularity. However, this is not always the case and may not be the best approach for your podcast and audience.

When selecting guests, it's crucial to consider whether they can truly deliver something to your listeners, whether it's informative or entertaining content. It's not just about booking someone with impressive numbers on their social media profile or a famous name to add to your guest list.

Even if a guest has a large following, it's not a guarantee that they will promote your podcast or bring in listeners. It's your responsibility to market and advertise your podcast, not your guests. Even if they do promote your podcast, it's important to remember that only a small percentage of their followers may actually see and engage with the post.

Ultimately, the key to successful guest booking is finding individuals who can provide value to your audience. It's not just about the numbers or status. I hope these tips will help you select the right guests for your podcast.

In this episode we discuss what defines a successful podcast and that before you determine whether or not your podcast is successful, you must consider what success means to you.

Success can vary from getting in the charts, your podcast working well as part of a marketing sales funnel, or sharing your message with the world. It could be as simple as showing up every week or twice a month, building a community, or turning up to have fun. Success can also be making money from your podcast, but it is essential to be honest about what you define as success.

Once you know what success is to you, you can turn that into a goal and plan how to achieve it.

How to Create Your Podcast Intro

The Lazy Girl's Guide to Podcasting

play

05/01/23 • 8 min

In this episode, I'll be sharing some tips on creating an engaging and effective introduction for your podcast. Whether you're just starting out or looking to improve your existing intro, I've got you covered.

First things first, let's talk about music. Using copyrighted music in your intro can be a big no-no, so I suggest using a royalty-free music platform like Pond5. Choosing music that fits your branding and sets the right tone for your podcast is crucial, as it's the first thing your listeners will hear.

Another important aspect to consider is the length of your intro. Keeping it short and sweet, ideally around 30 seconds or less, is key to keeping your listeners engaged. You don't want to lose their interest before you even get to the main content!

Including a call to action in your intro can be beneficial, but be sure to keep it minimal and easy to follow. Whether it's asking your listeners to subscribe or simply encouraging them to stick around for the upcoming content, make it quick and simple.

Introducing yourself as the host and reminding your listeners which podcast they're tuning into is also important, as not everyone will start from episode one. This will help make it easier for new listeners to connect with you and your podcast.

Consider switching up your intro from time to time to keep things fresh and exciting. Having a different intro for each series or even a one-off intro for special announcements or events can add variety and keep your listeners engaged.

In this episode, we are delving into the world of recording interviews remotely for your podcast. After all, for most podcasters, it can be quite rare to be sat physically in the same room as your podcast guest when interviewing them for your show.

Most podcaster's go-to for recording remote interviews is Zoom. Zoom is a great platform, however, it was never designed to record and publish podcast audio. So instead, I'm recommending another platform that is 100% free and does not have the same time and audio limitations that Zoom does.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

I started this show because I felt that there was a real lack of information out there for individuals who want to start a podcast that was quick, easy to access and full of actionable tips. When I started my first podcast, I could only find podcasts that had interviews and episodes that were 30+ minutes long. I didn't want that type of content. So, I saw a gap in the market for a podcast with short, punchy episodes that gave listeners what they wanted and needed right there.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

I hope that listeners will be empowered to create their own podcast show or take their current show up a notch with actionable tips. I also want individuals to be empowered to realise that podcasting does not need to be overly time-consuming, challenging, or expensive.

Which episode should someone start with?

Any of them! Each episode is designed to cover one key area of podcasting. So browse through the list until you find an area of podcasting that you want to know more about and start there!

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

Probably episode 40 'What You Need to Know About Buying Podcast Reviews.' It's an interesting exploration into the underworld of podcast chart manipulation and how genuine connection and slow, steady, but genuine growth will always benefit you and your podcast over quick-wins.

What is your vision for your show?

My vision for the show is to be a go-to resource for those starting or looking to grow their own podcast show. I especially want women to feel more empowered to start or grow a podcast show; we're still massively under-represented in the podcast charts!

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

At the moment I'm really enjoying The Trial of Lucy Letby. It's been a fascinating case to follow and the presenters have reported on the trial very well. I also am enjoying The Katie Price Show, She Calls Her Shots, and Honest Business.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

I was having a conversation with a friend one day who was starting her own show. She sighed and said that she was fed up of going through so much rubbish information and she just wanted a lazy girl guide to starting a podcast. And that was it...the podcast was named!
