13 Self-Awareness, Happiness and Leadership with Matthew Phelan
The Knowing Self Knowing Others Podcast
01/29/23 • 28 min
Matt Phelan is Co-Founder & Co-CEO of The Happiness Index He's focused on sharing the vision of Freedom To Be Human with a global audience.
Matt is happiest when spending time with loved ones, particularly anything that is outdoors in nature.
What does Matt say about himself on Seedrs?
I started my first business, a marketing agency, in 2008 right before the last big financial crisis. Although I can’t recommend starting a business when the world is in melt-down, we certainly had to learn a lot of lessons very quickly at the time!
My first business was actually integral to building The Happiness Index. Not only did the idea come from one of our customers (who is now our Chief Marketing Officer), but our CTO at the time built V1 of our product. It was initially an in-house solution we used! Quickly our customers started asking to use it too, and now we provide a platform that’s used by thousands of people across over 100 countries.
What is The Happiness Index (from Seedrs)?
In a nutshell, we provide a SaaS platform that helps HR and People professionals measure their team’s happiness and engagement. Traditionally, emotions are left out of the workplace, but neuroscience shows us that we need to unite both the head and the heart. By understanding how employees are thinking and feeling, businesses will thrive.
Matt is the author of Freedom To Be Happy: The Business Case for Happiness.
Matt also did a TED talk in 2022. Here's a link to Matt's TEDx Brighton talk

Podcast Q&A
Why did you start this show?
The Knowing Self Knowing Others Podcast was born out of my desire to take my research from academia to the office. I finished my doctorate about self-awareness, leader effectiveness and leadership at all levels in 2021 and I wanted to take my learning from the text books out into the workplace to make it live, relevant and useful to people in the world of work. Through discussions with thinkers from around the globe the importance of self aware leadership is being elevated across all sectors
What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?
I want listeners to think about their own self-awareness, embark on their journey of greater self awareness and start workplace discussions about self awareness as a way of making work places more psychologically safe places where respectful challenge is welcomed, and where peoples voices are heard at all levels.
Which episode should someone start with?
Definitely start with the 'Bonus Track - Intro and Welcome to The Knowing Self Knowing Others Podcast'. It'll give you the contextual background to the discussions I have with my guests. It'll tell you about my three layer definition of self awareness, how I define leader effectiveness and explain what I mean when I say leadership 'at all levels'.
Which have been your favourite episodes so far?
Oh my goodness. They've all been so different! I've spoken to people from across the globe, from different sectors and from different backgrounds. I've spoken to people I've never met before and I've spoken to people I've known for over 20 years. They've each been different and I've learnt something new each time I've interviewed a guest. I share all of the unique learning with listeners through my Top Takeaways articles and videos on LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube and the other social channels
Which episode are you most proud of?
I guess I'm most proud of my discussion with Alison Lagier. Alison appointed me to one of my first management roles over 20 years ago, which was a springboard for my career. She is experienced, wise and kind and it was just amazing to have a chance to talk with her and reflect on her amazing career
What is your vision for your show?
My vision for the show is to open up discussions and debates in physical and virtual offices around the globe. I want it to lift the lid on difficult relationship challenges and start the process of making them better. My ultimate goal would be for Top Takeaway topics to be discussion in regular development sessions in workplaces around the world Ultimately, I want my research, blog, podcast, thoughts and ideas to make people's work experiences better
What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?
I have two - Deep Leadership hosted by Jon Rennie and Geeks, Geezers and Googlization by Ira Wolfe and Jason Cochran
How did you come up with the name for your podcast?
Knowing Self Knowing Others has been the name that I always had in mind when I was doing my doctorate and I've stuck with it. It's linked to the iconic self awareness phrase, 'Know Thyself', ons of the Delphic maxims. Self awareness is a journey of knowing oneself, knowing others, knowing oneself better, knowing others better and on and on it goes!
Tell us a bit about yourself
I'm the Director of Thoughts and Ideas @ Knowing Self Knowing Others. I'm also an Assistant Director in a Children's Charity, having I've worked in the English and Welsh public sector for over 20 years. Throughout my career, I've been interested in working relationship: the dynamics between people and the impact both good and bad relationships have on individuals and their ability to do their job.
